Groundhog Day has come and gone, but while the days are finally getting longer it’s still not Spring just yet. If your skin is showing the signs of Winter fatigue, we understand! That’s why we are offering you 9 tips and 15+ ideas to tame Winter skin and give your skin a more beautiful Winter, along with some products to try that help you deal with the irritation and other skin issues that Winter brings.
TIP: Moisturize Regularly: In Winter, you need to give your skin more moisture. If you apply it immediately after your shower or bath it absorbs even better (your pores are more open). It is especially important to choose a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher for your face (and exposed body parts), even in the Winter (the sun’s rays are always out there). If you find your skin is suddenly dry, this is the time to try more emollient products. You can pack them away when the weather gets warmer, if you wish.
Products To Try: Get the really, really “big gun” of moisturization for your face: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Deep Moisture Balm ($24.00 5 fl. oz.). This product has been a favorite of sportspeople and extreme adventurers as it will protect and moisturize dry to very dry skin up to 24 hours with Antarcticine (sourced from a microorganism in Antarctica Antarcticine smooths and shields shin and protects skin from extremely cold temperatures), a high level of Glycerin to store and retain moisture, plus Edelweiss flower extract, known to thrive in the high altitudes of the Swiss Alps, that helps to lock in hydration. It is also Fragrance Free, Paraben Free, and Silicone Free. For more information visit your favorite Kiehls counter or store, or visit Kiehls.com
Type “moisturizer” into our search box (upper right hand side of our page) and tons of products will show up. But we also like unique products, such as this hydrating spray mist. The Hydramucine Treating Mist from G.M. Collin ( approx. $35.00 7 fl. oz.) makes it easy to refresh and revive tired and dry skin, instantly. The pump spray bottle holds an alcohol and colorant-free hydrating mist that incorporates botanical and natural extracts to help restore and rehydrate dehydrated skin, but doesn’t leave it “sticky.” Spray on face, neck and decollete any time you wish, and reap the rewards of the soothing, lightly herbal-scented mist that also tightens pores, reduces redness, and helps your skin to protect against dehydrating conditions. Who doesn’t love a multi-tasker? For more information visit the G.M. Collin Web Site
Tip: Exfoliate dull, dry skin: Exfoliating removes all those nasty little flakes, and the layer of dead skin cells that sits on the skin’s surface. This helps your skin look brighter and smoother. They can be drying and irritating so use and choose wisely, but don’t give up on them during the Winter months.
Products To Try: For anti-aging benefits along with exfoliation, we think retinoids are a good way to go. A new product to try is NEOVA® Dual Matrix [Retinol + DNA] ($95.00 1 fl. oz.). This is a refining facial treatment in an oxygen-free pump bottle that dispenses a metered dose of a patented retinol technology, and liposome-encapsulated DNA repair enzymes. The Retinol+ DNA repair technology gives you results within 2 weeks (used once daily) and without so much typical retinoid irritation. It is good for all skin types to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin tone, texture and clarity, fights hormonally-related acne, and even moisturizes skin. The DNA repair enzymes in this product can helps skin recover from previous sun damage and helps protect against future damage. On a personal note, most retinoids make me itch and burn in less than a day. I tolerated this one well. My skin and my results may not be the same as yours, but NEOVA gave me hope that I could still use this type of product without suffering the typical side effects. Yes, happy dance! We’re not going into the major chemical analysis here, but you can find it all on the NEOVA web site. *when you exfoliate, you introduce new skin to the sun’s damaging rays and you must use SPF 30 or higher (our SPF suggestion follows):

Take Care of Your Lips: Lips are always exposed to the elements . They dry out even more if you wear longwear lipsticks. Waxy lip balms offer instant relief, but can make lips flake, so you apply more balm, compounding the problem. The same goes for licking your lips. Try a different kind of lip hydrator, such as a lip oil, and gently exfoliate the dry flakes regularly.
Products To Try: We like Yes to Coconut Cooling Lip Oil 9$4.99) that comes in a slim squeeze tube with slanted tip. The oil smells slightly of coconut, and features a 99% natural product free of parabens, petroleum, and SLS. It contains powerhouse moisturizers including virgin coconut oil, oilive oil, shea butter, cocoa butter and a slight tingle from eucalyptus oil. The product leaves a shine that you can wear with or without another lip color and it’s just $4.99 at Target, and http://www.YestoCarrots.com
Chapped lips look bad but worse, they hurt. Get a holistic treatment with Bliss Fabulips ($45.00) a bargain in a pampering kit. Unique is the Fabulips Lip Cleanser that foams away even lipstick in seconds. This was actually fun to use. Then exfoliate with a vanilla and orange flavored Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub with sugar, almond and walnut shells to polish away dead, dry flakes (don’t be overly aggressive and note that it has Walnut Shell Powder — not recommended if you have nut allergies). After exfoliating, pamper new skin with volumizing, mint flavored Fabulips Instant Lip plumper with a peptide complex, cork tree extract, shea butter, jojoba and grapeseed oil. Then add the Fabulips Softening Lip Balm. Let this sit on your lips for a while before adding lip color. The treatment doesn’t take long and the results are worth it. Get this FABULips kit at department stores, and online retailers such as FragranceNet. For more information about these and other BLISS products, visit the BlissWorld Web Site.
Tip: Skip The Soap: Soap often has sufectants (the ingredient that makes it foam) and other things such as fragrance, that can irritate dry skin and make it feel tight and uncomfortable. Skip the soap and use wipes or Micellar Water or a moisturizing cleansing cream or foam.
Treat yourself royally with Orlane’s Crème Royale Cleansing Cream Face and Eyes, (4.3 oz. $150.00). This super-luxurious cleansing cream doesn’t just remove dirt and makeup, it ,acts as a skin loving treatment with Royal Jelly and 24-Karat gold. Massage this rich cream into your skin and it transforms into a silky oil that you can remove using water or lotion. The result is clean skin that is super soft! Royal jelly has long been a staple of chic women who know that Queen Bees feed exclusively on royal jelly, which enable them to live up to 50 times longer than other bees. It has actives that are serious anti-aging powerhouses. 23-karat gold also has luxurious and pampering, anti-aging properties to provide detoxifying and anti-inflammatory, benefits and,we are told, “insulating” power that helps skin to fight irritation and free radicals. The product is so gentle you can even use it on your eyes. If that’s not enough, there’s a light honey fragrance that makes you feel elegant and pampered. It’s not inexpensive, but you don’t need much and it will get you through the dry days and nights of Winter feeling a lot better about everything! Yes, we are worth it.
Yes to Cucumbers Hypoallergenic Facial Wipes ($5.99/30 wipes) are packed in a soft-sided, re-sealable package. The wipes naturally exfoliate, detoxify, and rejuvenate. They gently remove dirt, sweat and makeup without the need to rinse. They’re 98.7% Natural, Biodegradable & FSC Certified, Dermatologically and Opthalmologically Tested, and Oil-free, non-comedoenic, hypoallergenic. We also suggest Yes to Blueberries Age-Refresh Facial wipes ($5.99/25 wipes) that nourish and protect aging skin with antioxidant blueberries and fruit acids of lemon and apple to provide gentle exfoliation. Neither of these wipes require rinsing and are single-use. There are just times when I am so tired I don’t even want to make the effort to wash my face. Wipes come to the rescue, because you should never go to bed with a dirty face or with your makeup still on. These are also great for travel, car, desk, tote, etc. Available at Target, Walgreens , Whole Foods and http://www.YesToCarrots.com
Immortelle Intense Cleansing Foam ($30.00) has become one of my personal favorite products. It’s just fun to use as well as an effective cleanser. Press the top and the cleanser puffs up like shaving cream, working hard to smooth skin and make it moisturized and fresh. organic. It has the L’Occitaine signature Immortelle floral water (this flower never fades, even after it has been picked, and its essential oil has anti-aging benefits). L’Occitaine gets this ingredient from its own, sustainable and organic plantation in Corsica. We included this cleanser in a 2015 Ways to Pack Light article, but besides cleansing and pampering, it also works hard to get rid of your makeup, even the waterproof kind. Learn more on the L’Occitaine Web site or visit your favorite L’Occitaine store.
Tip: Address Adult Acne: Winter weather can make adult acne even worse. Keeping skin very clean helps, especially when you’re adding moisturizers, SPF and other products that can accelerate breakouts.
We like the new AcneFree Sonic Advanced Cleansing Duo ($25.00) pairing a purifying “sonic” facial cleansing brush and an oil-free, purifying cleanser (with very tiny beads of 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide) to clenase with less irritation than conventional products with Benzoyl Peroxide. There is also an anti-aging head for the battery-driven, oval-shaped facial brush that pulses up to 8,000 times per minute (through touchpoints in the brush head) that help to really help keep skin clean, clear of blackheads and breakouts, and also help exfoliate pores. The brush has two (included) AAA batteries. A one-touch power button is easy to use. Apply the oil-free cleanser to the dampened brush, select the speed you want, and move the brush in upward, circles for approximately 1 minute of your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks, then rinse. Benzoyl Peroxide in the cleanser is great for acne-prone skin, but not so great for fabric (it can bleach clothes) so be careful! The anti-aging brush head works to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Use your favorite cleanser avoiding the eyes, and spend about 12 seconds each (not more than 3 minutes total), on the region between your eyebrows, right and left temples, and right and left nasolabial folds *also still available is the AcneFree Duo with spinning facial brush that we reviewed for holiday 2014. Tip: Hair Needs More Moisture and Less Heat: Look for hair care products that are specifically made for dry hair. When applying the conditioner, massage the product onto your scalp with your fingertips. Doing this will help to hydrate your scalp, stimulate oil glands and remove flakes. If you’re struggling with flakes and an itchy scalp, you can also use a mild facial exfoliator or a product specifically designed for your scalp.
Products To Try: Heat is a dry hair saboteur. Redken’s new Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Treatment ($24.00 5 fl. oz.) is a new addition to the Pillow Proof Blow Dry Collection. that helps dry and style hair more quickly so you’re using less heat. We loved Pillow Proof Blow Dry Spray with Heat Protection & Pillow Proof 2-day Extender Dry Shampoo when Redken introduced them in 2014. These really cut down drying time and keep your style looking fresher, longer. But the new Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Treatment which just launched is also a multi-tasking wonder. Inside a bottle with a wide pump top that dispenses a measured amount of product, there a blow-drying cream primer that doesn’t just reduce drying time, but thanks to Redken’s”Microflex Stylane Technology” also is nourishing, hydrating and preps hair for heat up to 450 degrees. With less blow dry time you need less heat which translates to less damage and dryness, and hair really is soft and shiny. Warning: use these products and compliments are going to follow. Tip: for more shine after blow drying Redken suggests Glow Dry Style Enhancing Blow-Dry Oil ($32.00 3.4 oz.). It has heat-responsive oil technology with transforming silicones that evaporate when heat is applied, leaving hair shiny and in control, without weighing it down. Tip: Stop Stress From Triggering Cold Sores: Cold, Heat, Stress, illness and even Winter doldrums can cause a serious flare-up , look terrible, and cause plenty of misery. You need serious care for these.
Last year we reviewed a new cold sore treatment from Carmex that can’t cure a cold sore, but relieves the pain and itch and makes cold sores look less obvious. Now there’s a serious medication: Sitavig® (ACYCLOVIR) 50mg Buccal Tablets that when applied in the pre-cold sore (tingling on the lip) stage, can possibly help abort, shorten the duration or reduce the number of cold sores brought on by the HSV-1 virus. The treatment is unique: an odorless and tasteless tablet you affix to your gum above your incisor tooth where it stays until it dissolves (for 6 hours up to 14 hours). Without getting too technical, Sitavig® uses a proprietary delivery system to deliver a high and sustained concentration of acyclovir in saliva and labial mucosa and provide a sustained release of the medicine. There is a lot more to this drug than we can post here, but if you suffer from cold sores you’ll want to know about it. Visit Cipher Pharmaceuticals and more specifially the Sitavig.com web site
Tip: Consider Colder Showers and Shorter Soaks: The comfort of a long, hot bath or shower can make your skin even more dry and itchy, although you want that warmth. If you like to soak in the tub keep the water warm but not hot, and use a product that has skin-soothing and moisturizing ingredients. When showering, keep hot showers shorters and apply body moisturizers while skin is still damp for best benefits.
Products To Try: It’s well known that that the yeast fermentation process in making sake from sake rice has amazing properties to soften skin. That’s one of the reasons we like the Sake Bath Soak with Ginger Root Extract by FRESH (6/8 fl. oz. $82.00) that has over 50% detoxifying sake to help you relax, while leaving the skin incredibly soft, smooth, and moisturized. The glass bottle looks elegant (be careful where you put it since glass can shatter), but there’s a powerhouse of good for your skin ingredients inside including the sake. Let your skin drink in the goodness of ginger root extract to help rejuvenate, melissa leaf extract to calm and soothe, radish root extract to tone and reduce irritation, peach fruit extract to help restore suppleness, plus apricot kernel, passionflower seed, and sesame seed oils to help nourish and hydrate. *Soak for at least 10 minutes. Rinse under a cool shower without using soap and gently towel-dry. If you’re not the soaking-in-a-bath type, put some of this on a puff, and buff lightly, and enjoy the scent of persimmon — you’ll still get moisturizing benefits.
Tip: Pamper Hands and Feet: Your hands and feet may be in boots and gloves, but the dry heat can make that skin dry, cracked, hard and painful. Always wear gloves outside and moisturize your hands regularly (use our search box on the top right hand side of this page to find “hand cream” reviews). Exfoliate the dry calloused skin from your feet with a good scrub or mechanical exfoliator. Then moisturize.
Products To Try: In December 2015 we reviewed some great touch gloves from UR Powered that allow you to use your smart devices without ever exposing your hands to the cold. For extra TLC and when your skin really “hurts” and you need more than a normal cream, you need a healing ointment such as CeraVe Healing Ointment (12 oz. $4.99). This brand new product was introduced to us a few months ago, but we’ve kept it under wraps until now. It has three essential ceramides and other key hypo-allergenic ingredients in a lanolin-free formula. It looks like it would be greasy, but it’s not — it’s just a super-healing and protective product that is tailor-made for skin that is extremely dry chapped and chafed. The key is Petrolatum, the active ingredient in healing ointments, plus mineral waxes, along with dimethicone and hyaluronic acid. We tried it and found that while it’s highly emollient and soothing, it doesn’t feel sticky. . You can use it on your body and face (even on lips and around your eye area). It’s great for men in areas women don’t have (to be a bit indelicate). My husband uses it every day. “It’s creamy and pleasant, and stops the itch and burn,” he says. High praise from a man who doesn’t like anything “girly.” The tub of ointment is large so he can slather it on (where the sun doesn’t shine) as much as is required! There’s no fragrance or color, even those with eczema can use it. This isn’t a substitute for a regular moisturizer, it’s a “big gun” for when and where you need real relief..and it works. Get Cerave (one of our favorite skincare brands) in drugstores, and visit the CeraVe Website for more information.
