COVERGIRL’S Embrace Your Face Finder, Fails you NOT!
Has this ever happened to you? It’s time to buy a new foundation, or a blush/lipstick/eyeshadow… You go to the store and have a general idea of what you want, and when you get there, you stand in front of the display of makeup and you’re stuck. In the package, all the foundations, blushes, lipsticks, etc. that you might find flattering look confusingly the same. So you stand there, wondering which one to buy. Sometimes you hit the jackpot, but often, when you get home that product just doesn’t look right on your face. It ends up stuffed in the reject pile in the back of your drawer, another wasted purchase.
When perusing makeup in packages at the drugstore or in mass market retailers, or especially online where the color charts and photos may not be true to color, even an experienced beauty editor can get it wrong. So when COVERGIRL reached out to me to try the Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder, a beauty/tech tool that helps women find the right foundation and other colors that will coordinate, I jumped at the chance. The Tool, or App if you will, asks you a series of basic questions, about your skin tone, type, even your age, and then determines what products and colors will be best for you. It failed me NOT!
Here’s how it works (this is a long review, so keep scrolling)!
I tried the embrace your face makeup finder on my desktop, and found it fun to use. To my surprise, it matched me with products I I wouldn’t normally select, and when COVERGIRL was kind enough to send a lot of products that were either the exact ones suggested, or similar, I was amazed to find that the “finder” got it right, most of the time. When it made a mistake, it was so obvious it was really a “what was it thinking?” experience.
FINDING FOUNDATION – Nearly Flawless but one big “flub”: The CG Smoothers all day hydrating makeup the Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder suggested for me in Buff Beige was spot-on perfect, although I probably would not have picked that color if I had just been standing in the drugstore aisle (I would have picked something lighter). And I hadn’t used CG Smoothers before. Now, I’m a big fan of the hydrating product in a travel-friendly plastic tube that smooths little lines and wrinkles and keeps moisturizing for hours without feeling heavy or sticky. But the OLAY Tone Rehab 2-in-one Foundation in Soft Sable was waaaay too dark. I kind of had a “what were they thinking?” moment, since I could easily see from the color swatch that SoftSable was very, very. If I’d been in the store, I would have had to go back to square one, and just eyeball the packaging, should I have wanted to try Olay Tone Rehab 2.-in-One Foundation.
Moving on to Powder, the Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder suggested CG Smoothers Again for me. COVERGIRL sent Covergirl + Olay in #340 Light/Medium which seemed just about perfect, probably better than a translucent/light.
Blush colors are, I think, highly subjective. Sometimes you want a dramatic look and sometimesyou don’t. Sometimes you want a blush that coordinates with a specific lipstick color, too. The Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder suggested Cheekers Blush in Rose Silk and Pretty Peach. Both of these are nearly perfect matches. Both of these offer build-able color. COVER GIRL also sent me Clean Glow Blush #110 in Peaches which is a blend of light, medium and dark peach that is not just matte, but can be worn as a blush/bronzer. Again, nearly spot-on perfect!
I don’t use a lot of concealer, but with that kind of product, get it wrong and you end up making whatever you wanted to cover up even worse than before. The Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder suggested CG Smoothers Concealer in “Light.” While I wasn’t completely entranced by the (kind of sticky) stick concealer, the color couldn’t have been better. The formula has ginseng, chammomile and Vitamin E , it’s fragrance free and won’t clog pores.
Like blush colors, eye shadow is truly a place where individual expression rules. But if you wanted to try something new, or you weren’t sure what colors to choose because you simply don’t know, the Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder will suggest colors. My choices were definitely not the ones I’d immediately race to buy. When I got these three above, I thought “ugh, boring!” But together, they did make my blue eyes pop! So, I was wrong and the face makeup finder was still on the right track. I particularly like the deep “After Midnight” blue shadow that made a nice liner and a dramatic eye look. So again, the finder found good choices.
LIKING THE LIP COLORS: Moving to lips, I was relieved that the The Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder suggested CoverGirl Lipperfection in “Hot” since all I wear is red or deep berry most days. Here’s where the Makeup Finder was really exciting, because my “go-to” for every day is CoverGirl OUTLAST and I have never used LipPerfection before. But I loved this lipstick, moist and creamy and HOT was a bright bold red that I would have passed by completely if the Makeup Finder hadn’t suggested it. Alas, the Outlast Colors that were suggested were way off…too blue, too cool. But Outlast is a fabulous product that I can’t live without. Red Hot and Beaming Berry and a couple of other colors live in my purse (but I don’t have to re-apply very often because these lip colors last all day and then some). On the opposite side of the spectrum was “Toffee Twist” a jumbo lip gloss pencil in a nude color I’d personally never wear (too bland). I wasn’t sent the Lipslicks Smoochies lip gloss in a tube to try, but received similar colors. both were good. Turn Up the Heat would have been fine, Girls Night out, too blue and cool. So the Makeup Finder didn’t quite get everything right, but close to it. And, even better, it offered suggestions about products I didn’t know anything about and wouldn’t have tried without color recommendations.
*while I was writing this feature I received an email announcing that COVERGIRL had collaborated with a Harvard psychologist on a study to prove that different cosmetic combinations impact the way people judge a woman’s attractiveness and personality at both the conscious and unconscious level. The findings on how we are perceived based on lipstick color were particularly interesting:
- RED lipstick wearers are deemed more creative and daring by others. Those who wear PINK lipstick are deemed sociable and fun-loving. . Plum lovers are perceived as more independent. And Nude lipstick wearers are seens as warm and caring.
In addition, COVERGIRL recently conducted a survey about specific lifestyle habits and how those might be impacted by the frequency you wear lipstick and also what shade you wear. Key findings include the following characteristics….
- Women who wear lipstick more often (4+ days per week) are more confident (93%) than those who wear it less often (0-3 days per week) (86%)]
- 73% of those who wear lipstick more often are “in the know” about pop culture – compared to 61% of those who wear it less often.
- Employed women who wear lipstick more often are more than twice as likely as those who wear it less often to hold a senior position at work – 34% compared to 16% of those hold senior positions.
- On average, those who wear lipstick more often own 9 pairs of high heels – compared to those who wear it less often, who own 5. And red lipstick-wearers own the most: they own 9, compared to nudes’ 8 and pinks’ and plums’ 6.
TRYING truBlend Foundation: This is a (relatively) new foundation from COVERGIRL with 21 shades to choose from. I used the Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder” to see what shade would be best. The result for me was truBlend Foundation M3 which I didn’t test (the closest color sent to me for testing was L7). I would have normally selected something closer to L4. L7 was passable because these foundations are pretty forgiving. Would M3 have been the best choice? I really dont’ know, possibly.
But now that I’ve tried TruBlend, it’s my favorite of all the CoverGirl foundations, although the runner up (for my skin, yours may differ) is CG Smoothers. But the thing you should know is that this is really a great foundation. The water based foundation has unique pigments that COVERGIRL claims “Blend & move” more easily with your skin. The medium weight foundation pumps out of a glass bottle and blends easily, masking minor flaws and evening-out skin tone without feeling heavy or looking like you’re wearing too much. I didn’t try the truBlend Concealer, Pressed Powder or Loose Poser Bronzer & brush, but the choices are 2 light, 2 medium and 2 deep in the Powder and Concealer, 1 each in the Bronzers/Loose Powder. If you are happy with the foundation, for just t$6.99-$8.99 these additional products can complete your look. And as to the foundation, at a Srp. of $8.99 it’s a really fabulous foundation.

The Bottom Line: COVERGIRL’s Embrace Your Face Makeup Finder has made it much easier to make better choices when selecting their products across the board. What made this even better was that the finder suggested products and colors I might not have considered otherwise, and I found some new favorites this way! If you have a decent smartphone and a good connection, you can easily access this on your smartphone (or on your tablet) to help make a good choice, even standing right there in the makeup aisle. Or use it at home before you go shopping.
Furthermore, this finder got it right most of the time, but you still have to use your common sense (because no one knows your face or your preferences better than you do). There really isn’t just one perfect match for everyone because we are all unique. You’ll still agonize, and for some, there may not be the holy grail of great color match. Sometimes, you just have to go with your gut, pick a shade, and take your chances.
