DERMAFLASH: it’s the hottest at-home exfoliator, here’s why:

by Alison Blackman

The Advice Sisters have reviewed many at-home skincare and beauty devices over the years.  The latest on our list is DERMAFLASH,  one of the latest devices on the market for at-home, salon style skin treatments.  DERMAFLASH , an at-home exfoliation device that basically gently “derma-planes: your skin, while removing dead skin cells, peach fuzz, his NEW first-in-class system brings all the benefits of dermaplaning right into your bathroom. Using a subtle sonic vibration, DERMAFLASH removes debris, dead skin cells, peach fuzz and other complexion-dulling saboteurs.

The DERMAFLASH unit is attractive and doesn’t take up a whole lot of space. The cost for the basic unit is $189.00 which includes the DERMAFLASH, 6 DERMAFLASH edges in a plastic storage unit, a Charging Base and Charging Cord,  a slim tube of Prep gel 25 ml/.8 fl oz and a tube of Soothe 25 ml/.8 fl oz.   DERMAFLASH is meant for the face, avoiding the eyelid and eyebrow area, directly under your eyes, the lips and the nose.

Is this new beauty tool worth the investment?  What we liked right away was how easy it was to use it.  The instructions were easy to follow, and once the unit was charged, we didn’t have any difficulty in loading one of the DERMAFLASH edges (or in removing it after the treatment).  The one-use edges edges feature a protective mesh developed to help prevent against any mishaps, nicks or cuts.  In fact, the entire system is designed for the sensitive skin on a woman’s face and enhanced by a subtle sonic vibration (you use it on dry skin, not wet).  This is good news for those who can’t use strong exfoliating masks. *note: the company recommends waiting 24-48 hours before applying any products containing acids (retinoic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, etc) to avoid any potential irritation.  Other skincare products are ok.

In just one treatment our skin looked more radiant, felt smoother, and removed some peach fuzz in the process.  Operation of this device is very easy. Once charged with one of our six DERMAFLASH edges inserted, all we had to do is apply about a quarter’s worth of PREP gel to a clean face, (it cleans surface oils -it’s more difficult to completely exfoliate the skin and remove peach fuss when oils are on your face). After using the DERMAFLASH device following the pattern shown on the included instructions, we were almost done.  You only need one pass on every bit of skin, which means less irritation. The last step is smoothing on some SOOTHE cream although,  amazingly, our very sensitive skin didn’t look particularly red or irritated.  Soothe contains calming botanicals, including Aloe Juice, Honey, Sunflower seed oil, Honeysuckle Flower and Crocus Bulb Extracts. These ingredients work together effectively yet gently to restore balance and hydration. Since you removed surface oils from your face, hydrating is a must.

Overall Result?  Smoother, more radiant skin with less “peach fuzz” in a short period of time.  You an learn a little more about how to use DERMAFLash” video below, or just read the steps in text below the video.

How to use DERMAFLASH:

STEP 1 – PREP – To prepare the skin for DERMAFLASH, first cleanse the surface of your skin with Prep cleanser. Wipe clean and gently pat dry. This will ensure a clean, dry surface for optimal results.
STEP 2 – EDGE- Insert a new Edge into your DERMAFLASH. Start the treatment in front of your ear at the top of the cheekbone. With your free hand, hold your skin taught and using short, feathery strokes glideDERMAFLASH inward towards nose over the contours of your cheek and entire side of your face. Continue with the same light feathery strokes on the chin, below and above the lip and finish with the forehead. Avoid the eyelid, eyebrows, hairline, sides of the nose and lips. The blue silicone pad on the side is intended to stay in contact with your skin throughout the treatment to maintain the correct angle. The treatment takes about 5 to 10 minutes. DO NOT go over any facial area more than once. For safety and ultimate efficacy a new Edge must be used each time.
STEP 3 – SOOTHE – To care for your skin after treatment, apply a thin layer of Soothe hydrator all over your entire face. Soothe was specially formulated to help keep skin soft and smooth.

The bottom line:  DERMAFLASH really wowed me with immediate results (obviously your experience may differ as no one’s skin is exactly the same). The treatment and tool are non invasive, and will probably not be irritating to most skin (test it in a small area first if you’re worried).  If you can afford the cost of the device and more money for additional blades and products, you can have better looking skin in just about  10 minutes once a week. We believe that used over time, you’ll get rewarded with better looking, more radiant skin and the benefit of peach fuzz removal if you have any. Not only will bare skin look better, your makeup will be smoother and lot better as well.

Dermaflash EssentialsThe downside if there is any, is that while the product works well, easily and quickly, the initial $189.00 cost is fairly high (although perhaps still reasonable for the results you may achieve and based on what six salon treatments would cost). The issue is that “The Essentials” (6 pack of edges, and a tube each of Prep and Soothe) will only last for six treatments.  The DERMAFLASH  edges are designed to self-destruct after just one use (the company says it is for sanitary reasons).   After your six treatments, you’ll still have to order more Essentials to continue effective treatments withDERMAFLASH. (An Essentials Kit with enough for 6 more treatments, is $39.00 –  6 Dermaflash edges, and a tube each of Prep and Soothe). For some DERMAFLASH will be a splurge, but for others, it will be their new must have for early 2016.
