Your Perfect At-Home Blowout
You want your hair to look amazing, but money’s tight right now? No one need know that your current “salon” is nothing more than a teeny tiny apartment bathroom. With the right products and a guide (that’s me), you can do a knock-out blow-out,, and no one will be the wiser that you didn’t go to a pro! Maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit, but honestly, all it takes is a little bit a know-how and some great products (and not even a lot of them), to do a knock-out blow-out, at home.
So let’s get started:
First, let’s see how a true professional does an actual blow out. Here’s a video How to do a perfect blow-out (celebrity hairstylist Ben Skervin’s clients include the likes of Kiera Knightly, Katy Perry and Rachel Weisz)
What’s Your Pre-Condition? One step to prep that you might want to do before you wash and condition normally, and that is pre-condition in a bigger way. In the weeks before your blowout and the big event to go with it, or just because your hair needs extra TLC when the seasons change, when you color it, do any kind of chemical treatment, or if it feels dry, a great hair mask can do wonders. The Kerastase Masque Densite, which comes in a beautiful jar with a metallic silver lid, is an easy to use and deep conditioning hair masque. Simply put a dollop on and let it sit for ten minutes before rinsing. It has Hyaluronic acid to retain moisture, Gluco-Peptide to restore a smooth surface to the hair cuticle and ceramide to strengthen the hair. amd Ceramides to help strengthen the hair fiber and protect against further stress. You can even use this daily to keep your hair silky. The Kerastase Densifique line helps hair to look fuller and “denser” so your blowout will look more luxurious (and if your hair really is thin or lacking in body, this line can do wonders for you).
Start with the wash. To get a salon look, you need to use salon quality products. That’s where the Simply Smooth line comes in. Made with the same type of keratin found in human hair combined with apple pulp, the Magic Potion Shampoo and Conditioner pair will smooth even the kinkiest hair. Instead of using chemicals to bind the keratin to your hair, the Simply Smooth line uses vanillin, which is derived from the vanilla pod, to do this instead. Not only does this save your hair from chemicals that can be drying, but it probably accounts for the warm scent. Both shampoo and conditioner come in flip-top bottles, the shampoo in a shimmery purple plastic and the conditioner in a see through plastic. The special thing about using this shampoo before a blowout is that it leaves your hair silky and smooth and primed to be curled, straightened, done up, whatever. After washing, I’d also recommend their Magic Potion spray. It detangles and defrizzes without adding any weight . You’ve shampooed and conditioned, detangled and defrizzed with the keratin spray. The next step is to use the Magic Potion blowout spray. It’s a shimmery light purple gel, comes in a small tube with a twist off top and you only need a small dollop to put in from root to tip. Then blow dry your hair and style. These products really do calm down the frizz…fabulous!
Styling Products: In terms of styling, depending on what you’re eventual style is, there are a few different products that could help. If you’re looking for a voluminous curled look, Kerastase Densimorphose is the way to go. It’s a thickening mousse with definite hold. It comes out like a thick white foam and rubs in easily to hair before blow-drying. If you’re looking for volume, but mousse isn’t your thing, the Blow Pro Blow Back Time spray is great. It’s a mix between a hairspray and a mousse. It comes out like a hair spray and goes on after you’re dried your hair, but works like a mousse to lift and give life to hair. If your blow-out requires texture instead of volume and gloss, the Umberto Dry Texture Spray is great for post blow-drying. It will add back in some of the rough texture you got rid of with the mask and the magic potion gel, but not so much that your hair looks unwashed. It’s an important step if you’re going for rocker chic.
The great thing about this is that you can go to your event, rinse and repeat. Aside from the styling products, all of these other products are great for everyday use, even if you’re not planning a blowout.
