Color cosmetics do something that is instantly gratifying — they change your look (and with it, your attitude) the moment you apply them. Nothing is as easily trans-formative And, when you’re tired of the look you’ve created, or if you don’t like it, you can simply wash it off and start again. Fall is the perfect time to re-consider the literal “face” you are showing to the world, and to yourself whenever you look in the mirror. This Fall, for example, I’ve decided to wear more bold lipstick, mainly red. It’s something I wouldn’t have ever even considered ten years ago, but little by little, I’ve been seduced by deeper lips. Now, I want them too! And even though I think glitter is too much for daytime, I’m wearing more shimmer and more metallic, not just because they’re “on trend” for Fall, but because I like the way the shimmer catches the light.
What is exciting you for Fall? Will you be paring down your look to nude, matte and pale, or showcasing your eyes, or just your lips? This is the time to experiment. What follows in this Advice Sisters Makeup Round-Up are some unique brands and their Fall featured colors, with something for everyone. Which of these will make it into your must-have list?!
Alison Blackman, for The Advice Sisters
The Advice Sisters have become real fans for BUTTER London. We love their trendy but wearable colors, and the wide range of high performance (and luxurious) options at reasonable prices. For example, why not try a fun mascara in a color you wouldn’t normally choose? Butter London’s WINK Mascara ($20.00 each) comes in six shades, framing Fall eyes to create seasonal looks, from the Butter London Bespoke Colour Cosmetics collection. Add more definition to eyes and play them up with a WINK Eye Pencil ($18.00. The one we tried was “Brown Sugar,” a deep brown that is slightly softer than black (“Union Jack, Black), but still has plenty of punch. The soft pencil glides on so easy with high intensity color, but it also sets quickly and lasts for hours. It’s also waterproof, so you can wear it to that sappy movie and still look sexy, after sobbing!
.The Advice Sisters also like the four shades of Cheeky Cream Blush ($20.00 each) that smooth on sheer and layer-able, and last for hours. A favorite is a neutral deep peach that warms up the last of a fading tan and adds life to pale faces, called “Naughty Biscuit.” Do the same for lips with the Lippy Tinted Lip Balm in six shades ($20.00 each) by applying the deep rose-pink, “Abbey Rose.” Other items in the collection include WINK Cream Eye Shadow (6 Shades, $18.00 each), WINK Eye Pencil (6 Shades, $18.00 each — our favorite is the color of the moment lime green called “Jaded Jack.”, and any one of five new fabulous Nail Lacquer shades ($15.00 each) .
During Fashion Week, the Advice Sisters visited the Butter London lounge, and got a sneak peek at some of the products Butter London is offering for holiday, too. For example, you can get this Lippy Tinted Lip Balm in “Black Cherry” ($20.00) right now at Ulta. Thye creamy, medium coverage lip balm is moistly matte and feels very silky and nourishing (thanks to a hydrating formula rich in avocado, mango seed, cocoa, and shea butter). The deep wine color can be layered to intense, but those who want a bold lip that’s not too “out there” can blot it down to a sexy stain. If you want to go the opposite, to the nude and natural side, “Toasted Marshmallow” will nude out your lips, without making them look “eggy.”
Whenever Smashbox comes out with a new foundation, you know I’ll be ready to cheer. The new Smashbox Liquid Halo Foundation ($42.00) gives you the look of polished skin you want for Fall and Winter, but also looks natural. It works with your skin’s natural undertone (in 10 shades from light to quite deep) so it makes a more perfect match. Smashbox is touting it as “the first-ever foundation with 100% Liquid Light Technology.” The Advice Sisters say it evens out your skin tone and blurs (not completely covers) imperfections such as broken blood vessels (even zits) and gives your skin a natural (not too dry, not to glowy), luminous finish. It is also moisturizing and has SPF 15 and is dispensed from a glass pump bottle (so your fingers stay cleaner and your foundation doesn’t dry out and get “funky.” Keep in mind that Smashbox is the line created for a photography studio, and the HD formula was made so that skin looks great, even in close-ups. Some reviews say that it’s difficult to find your perfect match, but with my fair and warm, freckled skin #2 seemed to be a good match. Here’s a guide to the colors that can help: Shade 1 – Natural vanilla for fair complexions; Shade 2 – Warm vanilla for fair/light complexions; Shade 3 – Light beige for light complexions; Shade 4 – Light warm beige for light complexions, Shade 5 – Golden beige for light/medium complexions, Shade 6 – Warm medium beige for medium complexions, Shade 7 – Golden medium beige for medium complexions, Shade 8 – Natural tan for medium/dark complexions, Shade 9 – Dark golden tan for dark complexions, Shade 10 – Natural deep cocoa for dark complexions. …and while we are on the topic of Smashbox, I jut want to mention one other product that I really like for Fall and that’s the Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss ($19.00) that is nurturing and silky and shiny and gorgeous,. The one I really fell for, is “Pout.” This gloss is a barely-there pink, which usually looks unnaturally “eggy” on less than perfect lips, but this one is just sheer and luminous and makes your lips look just like the name of the gloss — pouty! The gloss, in a slim, wanded tube, is a bit of a splurge for budget beaut-tistas at $19.00, but is also moisturizing and nurturing with Vitamin E and sunflower seed oil. “Pout,” or any of the other Smashbox lip gloss colors, will make your day, evening, weekend–moment!
No matter what you put on your face, Laura Geller’s Skin Diffuser Loose Baked Powder with Brush QVC Item #A234525 Approximately $54.50 (and exclusive to QVC until December 2013), will help make it look more flawless. I love Laura Geller’s products because they somehow always manage to make your skin look like it is really yours, only a lot better than bare. This powder comes in a shaker compact with a “stopper” that fills up the holes when the powder isn’t being used, as well as a cover that slides over the holes to “dial it” shut, so it doesn’t spill all over. You get a buf buff, too, or apply it with the powder brush included with the set on QVC. The powder comes in Fair, Light, Medium, Tan or Deep (the medium was sheer and believable on my fair/medium skin). While some powder, even loose powder, can look dry and settle into fine lines, this one just blurred flaws and lightly mattified while controlling shine (thanks to optical blurring refiners). On days when I’m only wearing a tinted moisturizer or a BB or CC cream, this last step is the one that keeps my face looking fresher, longer. It is a ” must try,” buy! Get yours at QVC.com
There is just something about AVEDA products that makes me fall in love with them, over and over again. For example, what could be more transformative that an Aveda Rehydrating Lip Glaze ($18.00) in the deep wine gloss called “Winterberry.” This gloss plumps, soothes and even helps to reduce the look of fine lines. Aveda claims that use of this gloss for 8 weeks, with it’s luxurious feel and an organic vanilla and mint aroma and flavor will help to increase lip moisture by an average of 25%. Impressive! And the gloss uses peptide technology to plump lips while it nourishes the with pomegranate oil (pomegranates are full of powerful antixodants). And the gloss This particular color is a cool wine tone and it’s fairly intense, but palefaces can blot it down a bit, and still get the trendy look on their lips. Of course, since it’s Aveda, the outer carton is also a nice, eco-friendly, 100% recycled newsprint shell. If you don’t like the look of Winterberry there are a dozen shades to choose from, but one should make it onto your “it” list this season! Bold lips are fun, and for a great product to create a bold lip, try the Lil’ Lip Kit ($16.00) from LAQA & Co. It features two chubby, mini sized lip pencils that look like sophisticated crayons and they don’t even need a sharpener! Just swivel Laqa & Co pencils up from the bottom as you need them. Or go Big and Fat” with one of Laqa & Co.’s Fat Lip Pencils ($18.00) in five different colors. We selected a moistly-matte, bright orange-y red called: “Ring of Fire” (Johnny Cash would be proud). This sizzling hot red coats lips smoothly and easily with glossy color. All you need to do is swivel more up from the base as you need it — no sharpener required. Those who want subtler color can opt for peach or nude. Packaging artwork created by FIELD. An art collective, Field are inspired by the patterns of nature and the dynamics of life.

Are you up for Midnight wine or perhaps craving the warm glow of copper? Senna Cosmetics Fall 2013 collection has two looks, Ravishing Ruby (berries, gilded bronzes and ruby red lips) and Neo Copper (glimmering bronze and copper colors). If you’re not already familiar with Senna Cosmetics, you should be! The brand was created in 1976 by Emmy nominated artist Eugenia Weston. You can expect high performance products luxuriously presented, with skin perfecting foundations, richly pigmented eye colors, innovative mineral makeup and a patented brow kit for do it yourself-ers.
You can’t help but fall in love with at least some (if not all) of this fall collection, that includes includes 8 new releases from Senna: Two cream lipstick shades (Beautiful Bronze and Ruby), ($20.00), two new eye shadow colors ( Coppertina Glow and Cordovan Glow) ($18.00), three lip lacquers (Blush Wine; Leather and Mulberry) ($20.00), and one sheer face color in “Moonberry”($18.50).
First off, I really like the Senna Cosmetics packaging. It’s simple, but has pretty touches such as a delicate paisely stencil design on the pots and compacts and atubes. The Lip Lacquer has an extra thin and long wand, to make application more precise (and I really like the soft vanilla scent of these super-shiny gloss/stains). But it’s the formulas that really make the products covet-able. And they may surprise you! When I tried the new Eye Colros, for example, my first reaction was: “Oh No! I can’t wear these colors!” But once I tried them, I realized that they were designed to be universally flattering. The “Moonberry” blush seemed to deep and berried for my fair skin, but blended out, the retro color (very trendy for Fall by the way) looked natural and gave my complexion a new look that worked. The creamy lipstick in “Ruby” was an intense deep blue red/berry that was a bit too much for my pale skin, but blotted and matte, it made a lovely lip stain. The Lip Lacquer in “Leather” looked very brown in the tube. but on my lips it was a berried brown that looked sexy and on trend, too. Another stand-out in this collection is the “coppertina” eye shadow that seemed like it might e too sparkly for daytime, but on my lids, the copper color was shimmery, not shiny The other colors in the collection were lovely to try and fun to experiment with, as well. The point is that great makeup should flatter, be easy to use, and delight with how great it looks on you. The Senna Cosmetics Midnight Wine Collection, truly delivers. You can buy it all in person at the Senna Makeup & Brow Studios in Southern California, or get it online at www.sennacosmetics.com or 800-537-3662
