It’s a competitive world.  Like it or not, appearances, count.  How you look is particularly important when you’re in the job or the “meet” market.  You don’t have to be a movie star to look good, but there are a few things that are complete turn-offs:  bad breath, body odor, and dandruff.”  Luckily, you can do something about all of these.  For hair, there are a bunch of  hair-helping options to help you put your best image forward. Here are some of the newest, easiest and most interesting that you will want to consider:

One hair issue that is very treat-able,  is dry flaky scalp and dandruff.  You don’t need to spend a fortune to keep it under control.  Alas, until recently, dandruff-controlling shampoos tended to smell bad and make hair look dry and dull.  That medicinal smell on your scalp and hair is also an immediate give-away that you’ve got flakes to fight. The good news is that the new trio of Suave Scalp Solutions Shampoos and Conditioners can keep dandruff from ruining your look, and do it with pleasant smelling, nourishing formulas. No one really ever needs to know that you have a dandruff issue, anymore! You can get the help you need in Nourishing Coconut & Shea ButterInvigorating Mint and Eucalyptus and Invigorating Ocean Minerals & Aloe Vera 2-IN-1.  The Nourishing Coconut & Shea butter smells softly like coconut (not like a tropical drink or sun screen) and has 1% Pyrithione Zinc, an ingredient popular in dandruff shampoos that is proven to fight flakes.   Do your love life and your career goals a favor and get one or all of these new formulas if “flakes” are your fate. All are gentle enough for everyday use.  If you don’t have dandruff, you can still share with your “sweetie.”   And with a suggested retail price of under $4.00 for 14.5 fl. oz, bottles with flip tops, you can’t go wrong!  Suave is available at your local grocery store, target, walmart, kmart, & drug store. For more info visit Suave.

When you’ve invested money and effort into your hair color, it doesn’t make sense not to use products that will help maintain the color, and the health of your hair. Pureology has an entire line of styling products that are created just for hair that has been color treated.  Their new New Colour Stylist Collection protects hair with something they call an exclusive, “Keravis-infused Strengthening AntiFadeComplex® (a blend of antioxidants and full spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreens including Heliogenol, plus Vitamins C & E ).   Lipid Extracts of coriander, camelina and olive oil help to boost shine and and make hair soft, even if it’s been chemically tortured. The products have Pureology’s signature scent Vanilla, Rose and Mandarin Oil so they smell lovely, not like chemicals and alcohol.  For those who need to know, the formulas are also 100% vegan.

Two of the newest texturizing products help curly, colored hair fight frizz and dryness: IlluminatingCurl, and AntiBreakageTwist ($24.00 2,5 fl. oz) . Styling products that are made specifically for the type of style and hair you have, are essential to a good result. The new AntiBreakageTwist comes in a pump bottle, and adds texture and shine. It’s a pliable paste that emulsifies into your hand. Just a small amount on dry or damp hair gives additional hold when drying, curling or setting hair, plus olive oil extract adds a bit more nourishment and shine.  The product is also free of petrolatum and mineral oil.

If you want a lightweight shaping lotion that is long lasting (up to 14 hours) try the new Pureology IlluminatingCurl 24 Hour Shaping Lotion ($24.00 5 fl. oz). In a tube with flip top there is a world of benefits for curly hair. Add a bit to damp hair and air dry it or use a diffuser, and let the coriander extract enhance color and shine, while Camelina extract keep the frizzies at bay.The product is also free of petrolatum and mineral oil.

Looking for healthy hair products that you can afford on a budget? Salon Grafix is known for affordable, salon-quality hair care.  They recently launched a new hair care line called Healthy Hair Nutrition. I really like the amber-colored pump bottles and tubes with either black pumps or flip caps.  Their color-defend formula is sulfate-free, paraben-free and without any artificial colors or harsh chemicals. It is also ph-balanced and not tested on animals. Salon Grafix’s web site claims that you’ll love it, but if you don’t you get a money-back guarantee.   The conditioning shampoo has a sulfate-free, lather-free gentle cleansing formula that rebalances the amount of natural oils necessary for healthy hair, but without making it into an oil slick or weighing it down. Healthy Hair Nutrition features Lauryl Glucoside, a 100% plant-based ingredient ( from coconut oil and sugar).

The  claim is that this cleansing product takes the place of  five different products: shampoo, daily conditioner, deep conditioner, leave in conditioner and detangler.  The products are safe for colored hair, and all hair types.  But alas, the scent billed as  “Citrus Creme” was a light floral with a hint of chemicals, but it wasn’t unpleasant. And while I do love lathering shampoo I know from experience that a non-lathering shampoo is really better for hair health.  My hair looked fine, and felt soft. The Intensive Hair Repair Masque is a weekly treatment for extremely dry and damaged hair or just after any chemical treatment or heavy heat styling to keep hair strong and healthy.  You simply apply it (after the Conditioning Cleanser) and leave it in 3-5 minutes (or 15-20 minutes if you want super-conditioning). Then rise and style as usual. Learn more on the Salon Grafix Web site www.salongrafix.com or get them online at popular beauty web sites and stores like CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart.

Hair accessories are now a literal “must-have” on the red carpet, but you can feel like a star every day simply by adding a piece of hair jewelry to your style.   They’re not just to keep hair in place, you know!  You don’t have to thread your hair with genuine pearls, or glitter with diamond broaches.  A simple hair barrette, bobbypin,  or headband,  will show you made an effort. I love these bobby pins from Elle Hair Accessories. You get two sets on one card for just $12.00!  There’s one set with a simple but chic row of five clear rhinestones graduated in size, and for more drama, a set of bobby pins with red baguette flowers interspersed with tiny clear rhinestones. Wear them in singles, pairs, or all at once. Multiple barrettes and bobby pins were a definitive statement on the Spring 2012 runways. And this metal updo clip is $25.00 and worthy of a night out, resplendent in tiny crystals featuring a tiny butterfly at the clasp.   Elle Magazine has 42 editions in the world, 25 of them in Europe, with 19 million readers worldwide. Yep! They know a thing or two about fashion trends, and Elle Hair Accessories reflect those trends, beautifully. You can find Elle Hair Accessories in mass market retailers and drug store, and online.

Scünci® , a company known for affordable beauty, has upgraded the hair clip,  thanks to the “Linziclip.” These are a must when you’re at the gym and any time you want to keep your hair off your face. But they can make a fashion statement, too (especially on a bad hair day).  Unlike a traditional jaw/claw clip, the Linziclip concealed the springs of the clip, so it is flat on top, making it less bulky and easier to wear.  This also makes it nice for travel, since the clips add less bulk and more fashion options to your makeup bag. The clip is available in three sizesL small, medium and large, black, amber, tortoise, navy and white, as well trendy colors: chocolate, green, garnet, metallic taupe, silver and gold. Lace and croc.  The clips are available at major drug and mass market retailers. Choose from 1pk Diamond 38477 – SRP $5.99 1pk Regular 38479 – SRP $3.99 1pk Large 38478 – SRP $3.99 4pk Small 38480 – SRP $4.99. Visit Scünci on the web at www.scunci.com

Redken is always coming up with new consumer styling and hair care products, and of course, new salon services and color *(read the Redken Chromatics 100% odor and amonia-free hair color review on this web site).    Another innovative, in-salon service from Redken is called Shape Control, a professional service that gives you customizable, permanent-style results from lasting frizz-free straightness to shiny, always perfect waves. And this “perm”style product is formulated without formaldehyde.  You can get the “Urban Straight” or “Urban Curl” treatment in an authorized Redken Salon. Although Urban Straight can take hair from very curl to super smooth, it’s not a Brazilian keratin treatment that might expose you (and your stylist) to dangerous toxins. Instead, Shape Control contains an exclusive “Kera- Shape Complex” that works to permanently reshape, de-frizz, and beautify the hair. You can get hair pin straight, or just apply the treatment to places where you have a lot of frizz, such as around your face. The Urban Curl treatment can also be customized from very curl to just soft waves that would take you time and patience with a curling iron. There are a few downsides.  If you opt for very curly or straight and your hair is the opposite, as it grows in, you’ll have to touch it up as you would with any permanent change to the texture of your hair. If you want either of these texture altering treatments, you should wait at least two weeks before getting any color. And, if your hair is already colored and you have a lot of highlights, or your hair is very fragile or damaged, Shape Control is not recommended at all.  Since I have highlights My colorist, David Stanko (also a Redken color consultant) suggested I give this treatment a pass.  Although I always like to try something new, I reluctantly followed his advice. However, if your hair is a good candidate and if you do try it please come back and leave a comment telling me how you liked it.  Some care tips:  wait 48 hours before shampooing after a texture service for optimal results and durability and  don’t  put your hair in a ponytail for 24-48 hours to avoid making dents in your hair.  Once you have had the Shape Control (either Urban Curl or Urban Straight treatment) you should use the proper shampoo and conditioner at home.  For Urban Curl, the Redken  Fresh Curls Shampoo and Conditioner will keep curls defined, moisturized and strong and their Styling Curl Collection will enhance the look of your curls.  Using a towel to remove excess moisture after cleansing, and using a diffuser when blow drying will also help.

Also recently launched are Redken’s Powder Grip 03 Mattifying Hair Powder ($14/50 .245 oz.) and  Redken’s Powder Refresh 01 Aerosol Hair Powder/dry shampoo $18.00 3.4 oz or $7.50 1.2 oz. The former is a powder in a small, shaker jar won’t make your hair shine, but it will make it fashionably matte, with texture that adds structure (something for pins to grab on to) for updos, allowing for more height without a hassle. I expect we’ll be seeing a lot of these magical shaker jars on makeup counters backstage at future Fashion Weeks! The latter is  Redken’s Powder Refresh 01 Aerosol Hair Powder/dry shampoo $18.00 3.4 oz or $7.50 1.2 oz. It is also good for all hair types, and absorbs odors and oil, with what is billed as a “revitalizing fragrance.”  Dry shampoos are light years away from what they used to be, and the 1.2 oz can will be perfect for travel. It goes above and beyond to absorb oil, neutralize odors and help extend the life of a blow-dry while leaving hair refreshed in seconds. If you live in an urban area with a lot of pollution, or you go to clubs, parties and bars where there may be a lot of smoke, you need one of these in your hair care tool kit!  According to the fabulous, charming and talented Rodney Cutler, Redken Brand Ambassador and Owner of Cutler/Redken Salons:   “It’s just so much more than a dry shampoo, it’s lightweight yet powerful and ultimately refreshing, and there are a million ways to use it. I love to recommend it to women with bangs for example, you can spray on your fringe before you fall asleep to wake up with zero oily residue.”  To get these new products or to locate a salon offering in-salon treatments and color, please log on to Redken.com Keep in mind that Redken products can only be guaranteed authentic when purchased from a salon.
