Hate Sunblock? Here are 10 Other Ways to Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Unless you are from another planet, you already know that it’s a must to have some sort of daily, SPF protection on your skin.  While a good sun block is the most effective way to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays, if you’re the type who just refuses to use a traditional sunblock,  you can still get some SPF protection from marvelous, multi-tasking products. While sunblocks with a good amount of broad spectrum SPF are best, if you select products that you love and that also have a range of skin-loving benefits, you are much more likely to use them regularly. After all, the best SPF product in the world won‘t help you if it’s just sitting on a shelf forlorn and neglected.

Multi-tasking products with SPF come in a wide variety of choices and price points. However, be aware that even the most potent SPF in a product won’t protect your all day because it wears off and fades in potency over the hours, just like any other SPF product. So if you’re going to use a multi-tasking beauty product with sun protection, you must continue to re-apply it during the day. Best to add a hat and sunglasses to help shield your face!  But if you’re just exposed for short periods of time, it’s much better than no protection and you’ll be getting those other beauty benefits you have purchased them for, as well.

Which products below will you think are must-haves? Here are some of my favorites:

Skin care is no longer just about delivering nutrients although that’s the main point. For example, Lifeline Skincare provides high tech skin care products, based on proprietary stem cell technology (using non-embryonic stem cells). One of their products is a Defensive Day Serum with SPF 15 ($160.00 per 1 fl. oz.) which will help “rescue” your skin more ways than one. But the best part is that you won’t even know you have it on your face. It is housed in an elegant, metallic silver box with light blue touches, and inside there’s a pristine, white, airless pump that keeps the product away from fingers, oxygen and other things that might degrade or contaminate it. This is essential to protect the precious serum. While it is expensive,  the high tech skincare that helps prevent the signs of aging, and encourages younger looking skin is what you’re paying for. The product has Vitamins A, E, B and D, plus antioxidants and a minimal sPF 15. active sun protectants are 7.4% Octinoxate, 3% Oxybemzone and 2% Avobenzone . There’s also a Recovery Night Moisture Serum that’s an ounce without SPF. Apply at least three pumps to clean skin in the morning, spreading evenly over face, neck and ears. I can’t say for sure if Lifeline Skincare is the new fountain of youth, but with a blend of stem cells extracts, Vitamins and antioxidants, plus the day formula with SPF, it might be a great start for younger looking, protected skin. Lots of people start to lighten up their makeup in the Summer and put aside heavy foundations in exchange for a tinted moisturizer.  Many of these products cover flaws well, and still leave a natural-looking finish, while providing moisturization and other beauty benefits. But Clarins has a UV Plus SPF 40 Day Screen Tint ($40.00 1.7 fl. oz.), that really beautifies and protects with a good amount of SPF.  It has a 100% mineral filter to protect skin against UVA/UVB rays -plus antioxidant cantaloupe melon extract that helps neutralize free radicals. It also has a patented Expertise 3P Complex to help protect your skin against pollutants, and it does this all in an oil-free tinted moisturizer (thanks to plant polymers) that leaves skin protected and moisturized, and really more flawless in appearance.  It’s a high tech skincare product that multi-tasks, making it ideal for travel.  The texture is a nice matte (not greasy or shiny–who needs more “glow” in the the warmer months?) nd it feels nearly weightless on the skin. You can blend this beautifully, even if you just use your fingertips. It covers in one application (you can spot-dot more on if you feel you need to). Alas, there are only three sheer shades: Light, Medium and Deep.  Those with the very deepest complexions may miss out, but one of the three tones will satisfy a lot of people because these tints are “forgiving. For example, I have reasonably fair skin and would normally wear Light, but the medium worked fine. Get this clever beauty goody at Clarins makeup counters and www.clarins.com

Clinique always invents high quality, high tech skincare, so I wasn’t surprised that I liked Clinique’s Age Defense BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($37.00). This BB cream has UVA/UVB protection, but it also has lots of anti-aging goodness including antioxidant Vitamin E, caffeine, glycrrhetinic acid (to reduced skin irritation), lamanaria saccharina extract (derived from seaweed to reduce oil production), and a hydrating complex that includes trehalose, carboxylic acid, and sodium hyarulonate (all super hydrating ingredients).active Ingredients (sunscreen) are: Octinoxate 7.5 %; Octisalate 4.0%; Oxybenone 2.5 %; Titanium dioxide 1.1 % and Zinc oxide 3.5 %.  Wear this tinted moisturizing balm on it’s own, or under your favorite foundation,  as a makeup primer. The stay-put formula is so long lasting, you should ideally remove it with makeup remover, which means you won’t have to worry about it rubbing off or running off your face in the heat! Another plus is that although there are only three tints, they’re keyed to pink or golden undertones in COLOR 01  (very light, pink undertone); COLOR 02 (very fair to moderately fair – golden undertone) and COLOR 03 (moderately fair to medium – golden undertone). The colors are “forgiving” so everyone with fair to medium skin will find the tints, tempting. Find your shade at www.clinque.com or your favorite Clinique counter, or Sephora.

Another take on an impressive amount of SPF protection in a tinted product is the Argan Daily Moisturizer with SPF 40 from Josie Maran (Srp. $32.00) which I learned about at a recent QVC beauty event. QVC has tons of beauty brands in all price points, and many of their products are exclusive to QVC.  This liquid tint in a pump bottle provides essential sun protection for the face, neck, and decolette, infused with Argan oil to help improve skin tone for a more radiant, renewed complexion. For those who wonder what Argan oil does, it helps heal damaged skin and is said to protect from the signs of aging as it corrects the effects of dehydration and loss of elasticity. The high amount of tocopherols (Vitamin E), help to combat free radicals which result in the destruction of the skin’s cells (and accelerate the signs of aging). Actives in this product are 9.5% Titanium Dioxide and 6.0% Zinc Oxide. I like the easy to apply, non greasy, blend-able, sheer formula. And I like the unique scent, which I can’t quite identify, but I think it’s a bit like licorice. The scent disappears quickly, so you it won’t compete with your other products. The sheer formula makes it great for light to medium complexions. I like the pump bottle and the look of the amber glass, but am careful not to put it on my sink or anyplace where it might slip off and break. You say you know that you should apply SPF, but you absolutely won’t mess up your fingers with creams and liquids? Glo Minerals has just the product for you! Their Protecting Powder Sunscreen ($40.00) is a loose powder in a jar-with-brush-top, that gives you full spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection in either a translucent or bronze tint. Since it is a self contained powder with applicator, you’ll never have to stick your fingers in anything. Simply lift the cap, brush on the powder, and you’ll get up to 2-3 hours of non-sticky sun protection, thanks to a whopping 15% Titanium Dioxide!  There are no chemicals to irritate skin, so even those who are super-sensitive, can use this. Mineral powders are not rated SPF, but 15% titanium dioxide is a lot of sun protection. Whether you wear this over another SPF-infused product, or alone, you’ll get some sun protection on a daily basis. The translucent adds no color, but the bronzer gives you a natural and sheer “look of the sun” without actually forcing your skin to tan.  But remember, even with mineral sun protection, a bronzer doesn’t keep your skin from the sun’s damaging rays.  Those who like the look of bronzers will not only go wild for the tint, but because these are self-contained powders with attached brush, both the translucent and the bronzer are super-great for travel. Pop one into your purse, pocket, tote or suitcase, and you’ll always have clean, pleasant, acceptable protection from the sun, right at hand. It’s simply, fabulous! Love it! Love it! LOVE it! If you’re on a budget, or you just don’t want to spend a lot of money for a BB cream, don’t despair! Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream SPF 30 comes to your rescue with what they are billing as a: “one stop wonder” in an 8-in-1 skin treat.  The product in a tube is a true BB cream, that hydrates and protects with SPF 30, for starters. It claims to blur imperfections, brighten, even skin tone, smooth, enhance, and is oil-free. The gelled-water formula is really quite pleasant and slightly cooling upon application, which will be super-welcome in the hotter months. The BB cream is sheer but it does cover nicely. Even better, there are 8 colors from very light to fairly deep, so women of color dont’ have to just throw up their hands in defeat. The colors are sheer and forgiving, as while I’d usually pick a Fair, I found both the Light/Medium and Medium to cover nearly the same. The product didn’t clog my pores, and skimmed over freckles and imperfections, blurring them a bit.  The active sun block is 1.15% Titanium Dioxide. It was a bit difficult to figure out what the beauty balm ingredients are other than the actives, but if my Internet research is correct, included in this product is: Copper (to help repair and rejuvenate);  Magnesium (for elasticity and firmness, plus moisture); Zinc, and various oxides. It may not be as packed with super-high-tech beauty ingredients and complexes as the super-high end products, but it still does a good job of hydrating, enhancing, and protecting your skin, for a modest, suggested retail price of $8.99. You can find Maybelline products in mass market retailers and drug stores, everywhere.

Another excellent tinted moisturizer with your budget in mind is the Aveeno Positively Ageless Correcting Tinted Moisturizer with Vitamin C, SPF 30 (avg. price $17.99). This tinted moisturizer helps to even out your skin tone, while it provides natural-looking coverage. The beauty benefits include Aveeno’s Active Naturals®Natural Shiitake Complex and Vitamin C, to hydrate and nourish skin, while natural,  light-reflecting minerals help to minimize flaws with a lightweight coverage.  UVA/UVB protection with SPF 30 is enough for daily wear with actives of 5% Homosalate; 7.5% Octinoxate; 5% Octisalate, and 2% Ocybenzone. I really like the oil free, moistly matte formula that looks natural and covers well, but doesn’t clog your pores.  The sheer, Light to Medium tint works on most skin tones from fair to medium deep, but I’m not sure how it would be on very dark complexions. I also like the oxygen-free pump bottle which, at 1.7 fl. oz., is still within the regulations for air travel. Just be careful not to pump the top too vigorously or you’ll get a lot more product than you expected or wanted.  Aveeno’s products are easy to use, affordable, and work well, and that’s why I am proud to be an Aveeno brand Ambassador. Get Aveeno products at your favorite drugstore or mass market retailers, and learn more at www.aveeno.com

Zo Skin Health Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 ($65.00 1 fl. oz.) is one of those products you never knew you needed, until you tried it, and then you wondered how you ever did without it!  This slightly tinted, light-as-a-feather, cream in a stunning, shiny, silver, airless pump with with up/down all-in-one cap, gives you broad spectrum protection against UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays) damage. But it also soothes, softens and hydrates skin (with Proprietary Lipopeptide that stimulates collagen) and plenty of skin-loving moisturizing ingredients. Even better, makes an ideal skin primer for other makeup items including bronzers so they last longer and look better. When it’s hot outside, this really helps!  This multi-tasking product provides an easy, elegant and effective way to get daily sunblock on your face without mess or fuss. The product features natural melanin and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection (10.2% Titanium Dioxide and 3.7% Zinc Oxide).  Help your makeup last longer, and add sun protection to your skin. It’s not bargain basement priced, but it’s so nice to use, it’s worth the little splurge. Get yours at select department stores like Nordstrom, or visit: http://retail.zoskinhealth.com
If skincare products, tinted moisturizers and multi-tasking beauty serums don’t get you to use SPF on a regular basis, there’s still another, unique way to protect your skin. COR Silver Soap claims to lay some SPF on your skin while you cleanse! The round, honey-colored ball of soap is so precious, it comes in a plastic cube!  You can’t tell just by looking at this translucent cleanser what makes it different from another soap, but it’s the patented formula of Nano-Silver with Silica Compound that claims to actually help clear skin, remove make-up, even skin tone, reduce pore size, replenish lost collagen, cleanse and tone, exfoliate, nourish the skin and reduce the signs of aging. Some of the key, natural ingredients contained in Cor’s unique CSC (Collagen/Sericin/Chitosan) Compound play a vital role in sun protection and summer skin care, including: Sericin. This is a soluble protein isolated from silk obtained exclusively from (of all things), the domesticated mulberry silkworm. It is highly moisture-binding and film-forming, meaning that the film lingers and won’t wash away after lathering and rinsing with the soap! However, Sericin’s opalescent light-scattering quality also gives it a UV protection SPF 15 for both UVA and UVB rays. And Sericin also has an anti-oxidant and tightening quality, helping to even out the complexion as well as protecting the skin with its barrier effect that helps to prevent dehydration. Other key ingredients include Silver. known as an great antibacterial agent. Cor’s nano-silver blocks the bacteria’s ability to transfer oxygen through its cell walls, killing bacteria on contact and helping to prevent breakouts.  Removal of bacteria also helps in minimizing collagen loss and preventing uneven skin tone. There is marine collagen, silica that helps disperse all of Cor’s benefits into the dermis layer of your skin,  and Chitosan, a natural fiber that acts to even out skin tone and help cellular regeneration.  It can absorb up to six times its weight in fat on the skin, therefore washing away unwanted oils on and below the skins surface, especially in trouble areas like the T- Zone.  That’s pretty great for Summer.  As they like to say in the info-mericials, But Wait! There’s MORE! Cor’s Silver Soap also contains Hyaluronic Acid for hydration, antioxidant Pomegranate, soothing Jojoba and Aloe. and Avocado’s Vitamins A and E, all important for great looking, healthy skin.  The Silver Soap, 30g (Travel Size) I sampled is $40.00 and there is a larger size (for one), 120g (The One), $125.00. While I wouldn’t use this solely as a substitute for SPF, it’s still a good idea, especially combined with other SPF products. Other benefits include nice lather, and the fact that some residue will be left on your hands as you cleanse. This is skin that most people forget to cover properly with sun block.  CORE is Available at www.corsilver.com

Sneak Peek: Tarte Cosmetics previewed a wonderful Maracuja Full Coverage Foundation and Brush at the recent, QVC beauty preview event.  This QVC Item #A226801 will be $44.50 is scheduled to launch in October 2012.   It will be worth the wait. The Advice Sisters reviewed Tarte’s last QVC exclusive of Pure Maracuja Oil and found it to be an excellent hydrator and soother for ailing skin. Maracuja Oil  instantly absorbs into the skin, delivering a high dose of essential fatty acids and vitamin C to hydrate. This new foundation, in five shades (Fair, Light, Medium, Tan and Deep), can be applied with a sponge, fingertips, or the included foundation brush. The brush gives you a more polished look, but my test with fingertips and sponges yielded good results, too.  The brush is a bonus!   The foundation actually helps to reduce the look of pores, discolorations and imperfections, in a great, anti-aging formula. It is full coverage, but can be buffed out, too.  Although I’d normally pick the Light tone, the “Medium” sample I received, while a bit deep, still was “forgiving” enough to be appropriate. You’ll love the flawless, polished (but not dry) look you’ll get from this foundation. Keep your eye out for it on QVC and QVC.com, later in the year.
