ISSA by FOREO is a high tech toothbrush that will truly change the way you brush your teeth By Alison Blackman, advicesisters.com
ISSA by FOREO looks like a little alien friend, a work of art for your teeth. Make a statement in your bathroom or when you travel, too! But it’s a high tech toothbrush that will truly change the way you brush your teeth.
The Basic Details: The Foreo ISSA™ features high-intensity pulsations which are channeled through soft silicone bristles, instead of the damaging scratching action that standard bristled toothbrushes use. The large and flexible head isn’t just for show, it helps you reach those difficult-to-reach crevices. The ISSA toothbrush is free of BPA and phthalates. It is made from nonporous silicone that resists bacteria buildup, making it at least 35 times more hygienic than regular toothbrushes, which can be home to millions of bacteria. The ultra-gentle silicone minimizes abrasion on teeth and gums, and is hypoallergenic. ISSA is fully waterproof and has a 2-year limited warranty and a 10-year quality guarantee. Even better, each charge of the ISSA lasts for 365 uses (six months of use – you don’t need a charging dock to clutter up your dresser or bathroom). Replace the brush head just once a year.

My Impressions of the ISSA by FOREO:
A few years ago I realized my gums were receding a bit. I always brushed regularly and well.
Apparently, I was brushing too well.
My dentist told me that my tooth enamel was actually scratched from my too-aggressive brushing technique. All this time I thought I was doing a better job because I could feel the bristles rubbing and scraping against my teeth. I mistakenly thought this was ridding my mouth of “gunk.”
Now there’s something much, much better to keep teeth and gums in top condition without harming them. It’s the ISSA by FOREO! This high tech toothbrush is a new way to think about how to brush your teeth.
My first impression of the Issa by FOREO was the something with a large soft head wouldn’t clean my teeth because it was so soft, but in fact, the ISSA did a better job than harsh abrasive bristles. The natural silicone creates high friction and sticks to any smooth surface to “rub” teeth clean, rather than scratching them like a standard toothbrush does. When you’ve spent a lifetime feeling the scraping of bristles against your teeth, it feels a bit weird at first that your gums don’t bleed, nothing feels harsh, and yet, your mouth feels clean after the four 30-second increments (2 minutes) are up. The brush looks cool, stands up on it’s own little base, and lights up when it’s in use. The brush head is supposed to last for a year. I’ve only been using the ISSA by FOREO for a few weeks, so I can’t say whether or not the silicone bristles will keep their shape, but it seems more likely that they can and will than the thin little nylon bristles you get in most toothbrushes. I really like the idea that you don’t have to charge the ISSA by FOREO so much, but the USB charging cord is short, don’t lose it or you could be in trouble!
There’s also an ISSA mini for kids (why should adults have all the fun) and on that unit there is a smiley face that lights up to reinforce good brushing habit.
The ISSA by FOREO is easy to use. Just put your regular (or home made) toothpaste on the toothbrush head and turn on the power button. Every 30 seconds the ISSA stops for a second, to let you know it is time to move it to another quadrant of your mouth (there are four). After two minutes the pulsations pause 3 times and you know you’ve finished brushing. You can press the plus or minus sign to make the pulsations faster/stronger of less so, but I didn’t feel that much difference in what are supposed to be 8 different levels. I just pressed it a few times and it seemed fine. After brushing, clean the ISSA with water, you can also run your fingers through the bristles if you wish.
The only thing I didn’t love is the little foam pouch that comes with the ISSA that is supposedly for travel. as it doesn’t close completely. For the cost of this product, it should have a better case! I would use a ziplock bag (more sanitary). You are not supposed to put ISSA in a UV sanitation case, by the way.
The bottom line: In the end, it’s a toothbrush; a beautiful, unique, high tech one. At close to $200 it is an investment, but if your teeth and gums are sensitive, or if like me, you are prone to aggressive brushing, the ISSA by FOREO could save more than money, it might save your teeth and gums from being destroyed. It can also remind you to brush longer and more thoroughly. Kids will love the mini. You can get a traditional toothbrush for a couple of dollars, but it’s nothing like the FOREO ISSA.
