Katy Perry has made sexy-cute into a very successful career. The singer/songwriter knows how to mix cute and sexy, with young and hip and innocent. This “teenage dream” knows how to look like she has a lot of fun. Maybe that’s why she’s a multi-generational favorite. Katy has dressed up as (an in) everything from cotton candy and lollipops to nothing but whipped cream. Like other pop stars of her generation, she expresses herself with colored wigs and outlandish outfits, but they manage to be “sweet” and not shocking ala Gaga or Minaj.

Katy Perry’s fragrance, Purr (by Coty) gets the mix just right, too. The packaging is purple, featuring bottles that look like little sexy kittens with rhinestone eye. Even the flip top tubes of the auxiliary (e.g. shower gel and body lotion) are emblazoned with cute little kitten faces. this could be just too too precious, but she pulls it off nicely.

Upon seeing the packaging for Purr,  my first thought was “how adorable,” but my next thought was that given Perry’s personna, the fragrance was going to be a teenager’s sweet mix of candy and fruit. I figured I’d dislike it.

I was wrong.

Katy Perry Purr is a user friendly fragrance, developed with the perfumers at Firmenich, that will appeal to a wide variety of girls, and women.  The top notes include peach nectar, green bamboo and forbidden apple (whatever that means), with a classically floral heart of jasmine blossom, pink freesia and Bulgarian rose. With notes like this, you’d expect a sweet and obvious fruity floral, but the bottom notes of vanilla orchid, white amber, creamy sandalwood and skin musk temper the “Cute-ness.”

To be sure, there aren’t unusual, rare or uber pricey notes that might only appeal to a fragrance sophisticate, but I am guessing that Katy Perry’s fan base really just wants something pretty and flirty.  Purr, definitely has that vibe. You can smell the fruits and flowers but there are green and sensual notes that come through at drydown, to make the fragrance something a grown woman would still like to wear.  The fragrance is fairly light, so at drydown you smell the lovely vanilla orchid and the other bottom notes, with just a whiff of the fruits and florals from the top and middle.

Purr by Katy Perry is appropriate for work, sexy enough to wear on a date.

Purr was launched back in 2010, but while it isn’t brand new, The Advice Sisters are reviewing it now because it makes a simply purr-fect (and affordable) Valentine’s Day gift offering for someone special. For example, two nicely boxed, 3-piece gift sets offered for holiday (which may still be available if you act fast) were $21.99 for a 1.7 fl. oz. Shower Gel and Body Lotion, and a 0.5 fl. oz. Eau de Toilette, and $38.00 for a 1.7 fl. oz. shower gel and body lotion, plus a full ounce of Purr Eau de Toilette. Young men who want to give a girlfriend something special will score “fireworks” with Purr. It might not be the thing to give a woman who is into high end and sophisticated fragrances, but for women who just like simple scents, Purr is just the thing to heat up Valentine’s Day this year.
