Which of these fab new for nail products are your favorites?
SINFULLY AFFORDABL AND TRENDY FOR NAILS
I love glitter, especially glitter nail polish. But getting that glitter off when you are ready to go for something else, is a challenge. Even the strongest polish removers involve a lot of scrubbing and rubbing which can damage your nails. Enter SpaRitual’s UNVEIL Peel-Off Basecoat $17.00) that let you wear plenty of sparkle for a couple of days and then peel the polish off in one piece! Even better, it’s a fast drying (30 second, y’all) drying time. If you want to use the SpaRitual UNVEIL Peel-Off Basecoat on a non-glittery color polish, go ahead. It works on regular SpaRitual polishes as well.Like all SpaRitual lacquers, UNVEIL Peel-Off Basecoat is vegan and 5-free, formulated without toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, and DBP.
Which brings me to the half dozen SpaRitual pastels of the Spring 2015 Rhythm Collection. There’s something for everyone, from spirited citrus to moody blue. Rhythm features six harmonious hues; Seasons, a chamomile shimmer matte satin, Cycles, a peach crème matte satin, Dynamics, a dusty pink crème matte satin, Vibration, a pale pink crème matte satin, Pattern, a dark grey glitter matte satin, and Groove, a soft blue matte satin. These sensual colors are all just $12.00 each. I can’t suggest a favorite, they are all creamy, gorgeous, and fast-drying.
However, twist my arm and I’ll go for the “glitter” (especially now that I have the SpaRitual UNVEIL Peel-Off Basecoat to more easily remove the glitz when I’m ready). Try “Pattern” for now, with subtle copper bits of glitter infused right into the dark grey polish, or go for true bling and add a top coat to this polish or any polish with “Soul,” which simply coats nails with dots and lines of gold glitter. Add a little or a lot.
UNVEIL Peel-Off Basecoat and the SpaRitual Spring 2015 Rhythm Collection are available now at select spa and retail locations throughout the country, including SpaRitual.com.
CREATIVE NAILS, FASHION-FORWARD COLOR, THAT LASTS WITHOUT GEL!
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Creative Nail Design (CND) is responsible for bringing Nail Art to the runways, and making nails an essential part of a designer’s complete look for a fashion show. Once CND started doing the nails of models for a gazillion runway shows, designers, media and consumers, took note. Today, not a single designer would send a model down the runway without a nail concept as well thought-out and promoted as the hair and makeup looks.
I logged a lot of hours backstage when CND was doing lots of runway shows, with CND Education Manager Roxanne Valinoti. Fast forward to 2015, and Roxanne told me that now, CND is less focused on doing a lot of runway shows but instead working on producing high art for nails. They still work with designers and fashion week however, creating nail looks for the likes of designers such as The Blonds, where nails have always been spectacular.
As a consumer, you can still get all sorts of great CND nail colors and these Vinylux pretty pastels (and one sparkling berry) are the colors you’re likely to see in your nail salons right now.
During Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015, I was invited to Paintbox (17 Crosby Street, Manhattan) to try a manicure with VINYLUX® by Creative Nail Design (CND). Vinylux Weekly Polish is a unique polish that will last for over a week without a base coat, just the color of your choice, and a top coat. Even better, as explained to me by CND Co-founder & Style Director Jan Arnold, exposure to natural light activates the patent-pending ProLight Technology™ that actually become harder and more durable over time. In the photo above you can see my hand with two different designs. The heart was done with a traditional gel polishand the other two nails were done with Vinylux. Both the gel nail and the Vinylux made it through several weeks, but I expected the Vinylux nails to last only 7-10 days. Wrong! They lasted so much longer I had to remove the polish only because the new growth was goofy looking. And while white polish could easily have faded or chipped,it didn’t. The polish dries quickly, and it’s 3 Free no Formaldehyde, Toluene or DBP.
While Creative Nail Design focuses on techs and salons, they do have consumer products as well, some of which are really quite wonderful. To see all the reviews The Advice Sisters have done of CND products in the past, check out the search function in the Advicesisters Beauty Archives (1999-2010) or type CND into the search box on the top right hand corner of this website to see newer reviews. Gel manicures are still a great way to get gorgeous, long lasting color on your nails. When I travel, a gel manicure makes my nails worry-free. But you can do gel manicures at a nail salon and at home too, with GELISH. The newest for Spring are inspired by a modern version of every girl’s fairytale favorite: Cinderella. The new Cinderella features and all-star cast and Cinderella “Ella” (actress Lily James) who honors her mother’s dying wish when faced with her new and evil stepmother to “have courage and be kind.” But you won’t need courage to find favorites in the new Cinderella Collection of Mini Gelish® Color Gels. The gels come in an array of colors, apply like polish, with twist cap and applicator, but are cured in a LED lamp in 30 seconds or in two minutes in traditional UV lamps, just like gels.
Gelish® stays on nails for three weeks with no chipping or peeling, and soaks completely off in only 15 minutes (*Mini Gelish® Soak Off Gel Remover is in the acetone family, but also has conditioners in it to eliminate drying of the skin or cuticles). You can purchase one of the Gelish LED lamps (check out our review of the Gelish MINI Pro 45 LED Curing Light for around $45.00) and do your own gel manicures easily and affordably at home. I’ve included actual swatches of the colors in the Cinderalla Collection as well as Gelish’s color chart. These gels really do last a long time. There is a lot of information Gelish Web Site including videos, and if you want to learn the proper way to do a gel manicure, it’s a great resource. Gelish also has an (ios) app which you can download for free in the App Store on iTunes featuring acolor selector, product information, step-by-step application videos and more! Every season the app updates with an additional range of spring/ summer/ fall/ winter Gelish® MINI colors: you’ll be the first to know when they are out! Essie’s Designer Springtime Bouquet from Rebecca Minkoff!
A true designer collection inspired by the runways to the streets, Essie’s “Flowerista” Spring 2015 collection brings two neutrals, two bright greens, a grey and a plum that look they they just poppoed out of a spring bouquet, and even better, they’re a designer collaboration with the fabulous Rebecca Minkoff. If you don’t know about this designer, where have you been?!! Her accessories cause heads to swivel, and her cool girl designs are everywhere. Some of her fans include Agyness Deyn, Lauren Conrad, Keira Knightley, Ashley Greene, and Reese Witherspoon.
Rebecca Minkoff has been quoted as saying that this initial shade collection for Spring, called “Flowerista,” was inspired by the rich colors of flowers, but specifically the work of artist Nick Night. And Ms. Minkoff has been names Essie’s Global Color Designer, so she’ll be at the forefront of what comes next in Essie’s color collections. I probably don’t need to tell you a whole lot about Essie Nail Polish because just about every woman who has ever visited a nail salon has selected an Essie color for her fingers and toes. But the polish found founded in NYC by the fabulous Essie Weingarten back in 1981, and The Advice Sisters remember when Essie herself carried samples around. I remember one particular event she had on a cruise ship in NYC to launch a tropical inspired collection of Margarita-ville brights and neons! This collection is fairly subdued, but the colors in the photos don’t do it justice. The two brightest are Flowerista, a bold plum , and Garden Variety which is a true, clear teal that could almost past for a sea blue-green. But even the nudes are not wimpy. Picket perfect is fairly dark, like a deep tan, and Perennial Chic has a lot of warmth to it so it looks peachy on your nails, not as ivory-light as in the photo. The Blossom Dandy and the Petal Pusher colors are dreamy and semi-deep, not dreary. If you are a GEL fan, you can get these polishes in a gel version with the same colors and same names, all names for flowers, of course! One more thin g: all Essie nail polishes are DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde free. You can get essie at salons and beauty destinations nationwide, or buy your faves learn more at on the Essie Web Site
TIRED OF YOUR NAIL COLOR/ART? THIS TRULY TAKES IT ALL OFF!
Cutex© Instant Jar Nail Polish Remover comes in a variety of formulas, but new for 2015 is one that comes in my favorite formula: the SPA Formula read our review of this polish remover. The easy to use twister eliminates the need for messy cotton balls and pads, and the possibility of nail polish remover spilling all over the place.
The new Twister with SPA Formula (Srp. $4.99 7 oz) is designed with a sponge and bristle brush to use on really hard to remove polish. Remove the lid, and stick your finger inside the jar. There’s a sponge inside and you just twist your nail against it to remove the polish. Use the brush to clean away really stubborn polish. Having tested the Spa Formula in a bottle, I can say that it really does dissolve most nail polish more quickly and efficiently than any other polish remover I’ve ever tried. But the good news is that even though it is strong, Cutex© Instant Jar Nail Polish Remover won’t dry out your nails and cuticles like other traditional removers, so you can change your look as often as you like. TIP: Do not shake jar before using. It really works! Cutex products are sold in mass market retailers and online at www.cutexshop.com.
