If there’s one beauty product you shouldn’t scrimp on, it’s a fabulous foundation. The wrong one makes you look bad, and the right one sends your BC (beauty and confidence) into double digits! When you find a great match which means a formula that works well with your skin and suits your skin’s requirements, the transformation can be literally, stunning.
You can find fine foundations in various price points, but when it comes to higher end, high performance products that won’t let you down, technology, and time, have made advances that can really amaze you. In this feature, I’m focusing on two that are both incredible and that are causing a lot of excitement (not to mention love and social media) among consumer and editors alike. Each has beauty benefits and technology to bring your best “face” forward, but each also have properties that are unique. You’ll want them both! Here are all the details:
Two of a Kind? Well, not really, but this is what these two foundations have in common:
Full but natural looking modern matte coverage with long wear (NARS says 16 hours, Clarins says 18 hour hold).
Both claim that the formula is lightweight (yes, they are amazingly comfortable, no sticky residue or rubbing off on hands or clothing).
Both are in pump bottles (clean, easy dosage, less risk of contamination although both are in glass so don’t drop them or leave them in places where the kids or pets can knock them off the counter).
Both offer a wide range of colors from very light to reasonably deep (NARS has 20 shades in every color including 6 fairly deep shades in various tones, Clarins focuses more on the light to medium colors in a wide variety of tones and has 4 deeper shades).
Cost effctive? Although both of these are fairly pricey, you don’t need a lot to cover your entire face, so they’re actually cost effective.
Both blend beautifully, too.
There’s something for everyone.
NOW HERE’S WHAT MAKES EACH OF THESE FABULOUS FOUNDATIONS, UNIQUE:
NEW FROM NARS! The NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation. $48.00 This is the brands’ first high coverage foundation. The NARS formulas always deliver what they promise, and a lot more. It is an oil-free foundation that really does what it promises to do: provide full, natural-looking coverage with just one drop and yes, it lasts for hours and hours. The formula blends with your fingertips so easily, you might retire your foundation brush.
The NARS “Even Tone Technology” helps to neautralize redness and dullness and it makes your skin look perfectly even-toned, but not “mask lie.” It’s good for all skin types and once you apply it, you’ll just forget about it until you look in the mirror and realize, hours later, that your makeup didn’t turn orange, didn’t get clumpy, and it still looks good. It doesn’t have any parabens. That’s all fabulous. And it’s also amazing that NARS has 20 colors choices, however, that also makes it a bit challenging to find the right one.
As a beauty editor, you’d think it would be easy for someone like me to choose correctly, but even I didn’t get it right the first time. Usually I wear a medium light neutral tone, and I initially thought Gobi ( light with yellow undertones) and Deauville (light w/ neutral balance of pink & yellow undertones) would be the right colors. Deauville was out of stock for sampling, so I tried Gobi which is Light #3 out of 5 and Punjab (medium w/ golden, peachy undertones) which is medium #1 of 5. While Deauville might have been a good choice, Gobi really was way too light, and Punjab, which I thought might be a bit too dark, was really about perfect, but perhaps Deauville with it’s neutral balance would have been a wee bit better? The point is I didn’t try these on in person at a NARS makeup counter or NARS boutique, but if you are going to invest in foundation, you must!!
One more thing: the suggested method of applying this foundation is to pump it into your hands and warm it up first, then work it with your fingers by applying a small amount in the center of the face and begin pressing it onto the skin working outward in sections. I didn’t warm it up but I will warn you not to use too much. One pump is all you need. One pump is magic! I definitely enjoyed wear testing these and now I’m one of those people telling everyone else to go get it now! WHAT’S NEW FROM CLARINS! The new Clarins Everlasting Foundation SPF 15 can hold its own against all the luxury brands and at $39.00 it is going to be a product editors and beau-tistas alike are going to race to buy. Clarins’ never disappoints the consumer (or the beauty editor) with gorgeous colors, amazing packaging (see my review of the Clarins Garden Escape makeup collection for Spring 2015) and products that not only beautify, but add treatment for the skin. TThe first thing that I like about this product is that is has some sun protection in it, although just SPF 15. It might not be enough for you to wear to the beach, but it’s certainly a help if you’re going to beautify yourself on a daily basis and you refuse (like most of us, I’m afraid) to wear sunblock as well as other skincare products when not anticipating a lot of sun exposure.
One pump of this elegant, silky, lighterally light as air foundation offers up to 18 hours of full coverage that honestly looks moistly matte. Right now as I’m writing this, it is Winter, and my skin is sort of dry, but the foundation seems to glide effortlessly over that issue, and come Summertime when humidity is high, bamboo powder and the Clarins “high-fidelity system”, creates a light, invisible veil to set your foundation not just to even out your skin tone, but also to make it look much better, thanks to Clarins’ exclusive Light-Optimizing Complex that captures, diffuses and magnifies light so your little lines and imperfections seem to melt away, and your skin looks luminous (not dry or tight). Organic Quinoa Extract makes it comfy, so Clarins says. It’s really a “wow!”
When it comes to color choice, you really have to try on the various shades to find the right one. The one that seems to be best for me in this collection is the lightest one #103, ivory, which is usually a shade that is too light, so again, you can’t go by the name or even the color swatch on this feature or a chart. You have to try the foundation on your face near your jawline and check it in natural light.
The Clarins Everlasting Foundation + SPF 15 ($39.00) can be applied with fingertips, but Clarins suggests using a foundation brush. I really don’t think it is necessary, but using your fingertips will give you a more transparent look as will a sponge. Apply with quick, light, smoothing motions from the middle of the face and blend outwards and gently blend towards the neck, hairline and ears. Clarins suggests sweeping a sponge over the skin when you’re done “for a more sophisticated finish.” Frankly, it’s one more step and I don’t think it’s necessary, but if you want to buff up your foundation, go ahead.
