From its humble beginnings in a former rundown nightclub in Clearwater Florida in 1982, a restaurant known for its owl logo and chicken wings (as well as their well endowed, attractive waitresses) popularly know as Hooters, has now expanded to over 415 restaurants located around the world. The newest is a 7,000 square foot space located right across from New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
The recent opening of the new restaurant , hosted by Hooters co-founder Ed Droste, was attended by literally hundreds of invited guests and featured some of the company’s current calendar girls, including Emily Phelps, Nicole Ciglar, Ashley Dill, Nicole Osorio, and Alicia Williams.
Fortunate reporter for The Advice Sisters that I am, I had a chance to share some chicken wings and buffalo shrimp with Mr. Droste, as I learned some more about the Hooters chain and its ubiquitous Hooters Girls.
For starters. I learned that the original concept was designed to imitate a beach bar, bringing the character and style of a beachfront location to more snow-covered locales such as Chicago and New York. A significant aspect of the concept was to employ servers who would be some of the most beautiful women that the company could find. This led to the development of the “Hooters Girls.” So far over 300,000 women have worked as Hooters Girls around the world, and many well known celebrities including actresses Amy Adams, Naya Rivera, sportscaster Leeann Tweeden, and countless reality television “stars” have had the title.
The wait staff wear skimpy outfits that show off their assets, much as women do on the beach, but how is it that Hooters is able to attract a great caliber of wait staff? According to Hooters, they take responsibility toward the waitstaff very seriously. Not only does Hooters discourage raucous behavior from its patrons. but much like professional cheerleaders, Hooters discourages that from the girls themselves.
The company also promotes its Hooters Girls through a variety of opportunities including beauty pageants and as was evident at this opening, calendars. Hooters also works to promote charities that are important to the girls, with a particular focus on breast cancer., with a portion of the sale going to worthy charities.
It is the Hooters Girls that help to differentiate the restaurant from other sports bars. With the Superbowl coming up this weekend, it’s the perfect place to watch both the football show and of course, the other “show” as well. Because, to this reporter’s mind, what is a dining experience but a show?
It appears from what I experienced at the opening, that the newest of the Hooters locations on New York’s West 33rd street will be an excellent addition to Hooter’s spectacular, with its two massive bars on two floors, 60 high definition televisions showing a range of sports events, and of course its famous …. wings. Come, watch the superbowl or whatever sports events you like, any day of the week, and…enjoy yourself! You know, you will.
