Natural Sun Protection Review: Let’s Get Physical!
By Alison Blackman
I have fair, freckled skin as did my twin sister Jessica. When we were little, our parents tried to protect our skin with a coal-tar sunscre en that was brown, stained our clothes, and smelled horrible! We would literally run away when mom produced that bottle!
Moms today would probably be horrified at putting coal tar on their kids, let alone on themsleves. We want and deserve pleasant and natural, mineral products and effective chemical sunblocks that make us motivated to use them.
This feature is all about modern, effective, physical & chemical sunblocks (and one “fake bake”) that the whole family can really appreciate. *learn more about the differences between physical & chemical sunblocks in our great review article .
Moms and Kids -Make Theirs Mustela:
We applaud the naturally- formulated physical sunblocks from reputable companies such as Mustela. Their products are 100% mineral, broad spectrum and made from naturally derived sunscreen filters such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.
Mustela is not just for babies or children, though. Chemical sunblocks have good qualities, but for those who can’t tolerate them, or who want a mineral-based sunblock with enough “oomph” to really protect skin from the sun’s damaging rays, try Mustela’s Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen Lotion ($16.00 3.4 fl.oz.). This sunblock is so gentle it can (and should) be used on a baby’s skin but it is good for the entire family with actives of 4.9% Titanium Dioxide and 4,7% Zinc Oxide. The alcohol, fragrance, phthalate and PABA-free product is a welcome addition to your skincare arsenal.
A Sunblock Stick for Travelers:
For travel and those who prefer a solid form of sun protection, Mustela also makes a 50+ Mineral Sunscreen Stick ($13.00 0.5 oz.). Put this petite, slim, swivel up stick easily in your pocket or purse for touch-ups during the day. This product has actives of 6.0% Titanium Dioxide and 4.7% Zinc Oxide. *you may see a bit of a white residue on your skin if your skin is very deep, although you can blend it out or wear foundation over it.
As with the lotion, it’s water and sweat resistant up to 40 minutes and hypoallergenic. If you’re using this on your child, note that using the stick on noses and cheeks every hour or so where the sun shines the most and where kids tend to touch their faces, is a great idea that they will find more acceptable than slathering sunblock on their skin yet again.
You can find Mustela at drugstores and mass market retailers and online. For more information visit the Mustela Web Site
Even the Sunblock-Averse Will Like Eventone:
When I think of Palmers I think of their great quality skincare and hair care at truly affordable prices. If you’re going to expose your skin at the beach in skimpy suits and cover-ups, make sure you’ve actually covering your skin with a broad-spectrum product that also moisturizes and pampers your skin, such as one of Palmer’s Eventone Suncare with Cocoa Butter sunscreens.
A Broad Range of Broad Spectrum Sunblocks:
I really love the fact that Palmers offers a wide range of SPF including formulas for face and body formulas from SPF 15 to 50. For portability (just pop it in your pocket or purse) I love the Eventone SPF 50 Sunscreen Stick. Use it on face, lips, and ears (they get sun exposure too!). Actives are 3% avobenzone, 15% homosalate, 5% octisalate, 10% octocrylene and 6% oxybenzone. But it also has moisturizing Cocoa Butter with Vitamin E , plus natural shea butter & coconut oil so you get a smooth, even look to your skin. The high SPF makes it a natural for travel and when you’re going to be out and about all day, too.
For those who like a spray, the Eventone SPF 30 Moisturizing Sunscreen Spray has all of the good for your skin benefits of the sunscreen stick, in a locking cap spray bottle. The slightly scented spray is water resistant up to 80 minutes and provides UVA/UVB broad-spectrum protection in a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula that leaves a tiny gloss on your skin.
Good Sun Protection is Yours For Under $10.00
Each product in the Palmers Eventone line retails for under $10.00, so whether you’re in the desert, at the beach, or facing everyday sun exposure, you can stock up on a bunch and not go broke. Learn more about the benefits of all the CBF Eventone Suncare products on the Palmer’s website and shop the line at Walmart.
Elegant Elemis Liquid Layer:
The Advice Sisters have tried a lot of sunblocks this season in all forms, but one that I’ve become fond of is Liquid Layer by Elemis SPF 30. The petite tube of broad-spectrum skincare protects with 7% titanium dioxide. It also has skin nourishing Jojoba, Vitamin E, and Antioxidants so it’s a beauty treatment as well as a sunblock.
A Nice Physical Sunblock With Beauty Benefits:
The portable tube dispenses a very liquid product from a fine tip, bit you have to be careful not to squeeze that tube too hard or you’ll get product all over you. Since it also has jojoba seed and coconut oil it’s very emollient and very comforting to dry, Mature Skin and sensitive skin. The liquid is very lightweight with no obvious scent. It’s just so easy to love Elemis products. I always find them elegant and so so pleasing to the senses.
This one isn’t for everyone but if your skin is dry, mature or irritated, or if you want a physical sunblock that you can pop in your purse and wear comfortably all day long, you’ve found it. Curiously, I didn’t see it on the Elemis Website, but we found it on reputable skin care sites, elsewhere.
Let’s Get Physical with Obagi Medical’s RosaClear:
Looking for a sunblock and you have sensitive skin or perhaps, rosacea? RosaClear Skin Balancing Sun Protection SPF 30 by Obagi Medical features 15.5% Zinc Oxide and 2% Titanium Dioxide. Woe betide the person who has rosacea and wants to spend some time in the sun. But this sunblock by Obagi is made for rosacea using only gentle physical sun blocks of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in a fragrance-free formula.
Tinted Sunscreen For Fair Skin:
As great as this is for those with skin issues, the high amount of zinc oxide leaves a white-ish cast on skin. Although it’s tinted which helps, even the tint is light. If your skin it fair, rejoice! This is going to be a sunblock you’ll love “as-is.” If your skin is deeper than ivory, plan to wear your own foundation over it.
For those who have real skin issues and really can’t tolerate most sunblocks, wearing a foundation that works for you over this sunblock is a small price to pay for good protection. For more information visit the Obagi Medical Web Site.
Don’t Go Out In The Sun At All, Just Fake It!
A Self-Tanner That’s Made Me A Fan:
Self-tanners used to scare me, but a newly-formulated, natural looking self-tanner called Sun Radiance by Phytomer ($56.00 4.2 fl. oz.) has made me more of a fan of “faux” than ever before.” This self-tanner can be used on face and body for a light/medium tone that won’t make you look like a walnut or an orange.
Slide the lotion on and in two hours you have a safe and better-looking tan than you can get from exposing yourself to the sun’s damaging rays for real.
For those who need to know, the actives are Dihydroxyactoe (DHA) which offers the bronzing tone, and Dimethyl Isosorbide that helps your skin to better absorb the ingredients for a more natural (and speedier) tanning process. Tips: Use on clean, exfoliated skin and layer (don’t glop it on). Wash your hands after using this product. Also remember that this product or fake tan does not protect you from the sun.
No Walnut or Orange Here!
This self tanner can be used on face and body for a light/medium tone that won’t make you look like a walnut or an orange. Slide the lotion on and in two hours you have a safe, smoother than you’ll get from exposing yourself to the sun’s damaging rays for real. The floral scent is pleasant, too.
