Guest Post: How to Write an Online Dating Profile, from EHarmony
Online dating? It’s now an established way to make connections. But if you’re agonizing over how to fill out your online dating profile, don’t fret. It takes time and a whole lot of consideration when completing your profile. Below are a few tips (brought to you by EHarmony) to help you write a successful dating profile:
Be open and honest about yourself – First and foremost, be honest in your profile. While it may be tempting to shed a few pounds off your weight, take a few years off your age or add a few cm to your height, this is not going to reflect who you really are. Nor should you lie about your personality or interests. If someone contacts you, it should be because they’re interested in – well – you! Besides, when you do go out on a date, they will find out that you have lied, which isn’t a great way to start. *Tip: Read:”Losing Sleep and Love Over the Lies I Told to give you added perspective.
Be clear about your interests – Dating sites such as eHarmony will match you with compatible singles, so it’s important to be clear about your interests, hobbies and other things you enjoy doing. This way, you have more chance of finding a suitable partner with whom you have lots in common.
Choose your photos wisely – A picture says a thousand words, so choose your profile pictures wisely! Remember to upload a variety of pictures of yourself showing your face and your body. Don’t put up any photos of yourself that are unclear or shot from a distance – this will make it appear as though you are hiding something. Opt for clear pictures where you are smiling – this will make you seem friendly and approachable. Also, if you have any pictures of yourself with interesting backgrounds, for example of a park, a beach, or perhaps a shot of you on vacation, these will make good talking points when you do start to talk with other singles.
Be positive – This may sound obvious, but it can be easy to slip into negative statements, especially when talking about ourselves! Remember to sell yourself – talk positively about your life and character. If you write statements like ‘I don’t like…’ and ‘I don’t want…’ you are less likely to engage people’s interest. People would much prefer to read a friendly profile that comes across as confident and positive.
Get a second opinion – It’s a good idea to ask a family member or a friend who knows you well to look over your profile before you post it. This way, they can judge whether you have painted a good picture of yourself and may be able to make some suggestions of other things you can add about yourself that you may not have thought of. It is also helpful to have someone else proofread your profile in case there are any spelling mistakes you may have missed. *Tip Read: “My BFFs Think Jeff is a Jerk, Should I Believe Them? to learn more about feedback from friends and family.
