Sake isn’t just for sipping out of small cups anymore. The Advice Sisters have discovered one brand, SOCIAL Enjoyments, that is Sake with a surprise: it’s actually a sparkling wine beverage that is all natural, gluten-free, with no GMOs, or sulfites and it is 99.95% organic. With only 2 gram of sugar, at just 88 calories per 10.5 fl. oz. can, it is about a third of the calories of an average glass of wine as well (and all the ingredients are listed for on the nutrition label on the can). SOCIAL Enjoyments is made from organic brown rice, sweetened with stevia and infused with natural ingredients such as organic cucumber and hibiscus. For those who want to watch calories and/or who are health conscious. this is the beverage that will impress guests, and make you the hostess/host of the Season!
I was skeptical that a sparkling sake drink would be something extraordinary, but I was wrong. One sip of the Toasted Coconut Almond and the Hibiscus Cucumber versions of this surprising sake drink wowed me. To suit different taste-preferences, the SOCIAL Enjoyments Organic Cucumber and Hibiscus is a bit tart, and the SOCIAL Enjoyments Toasted Coconut Almond is slightly “bitter almond-y” *my favorite of the two. While it is a sparkling beverage, it’s not “gassy” and over-carbonated, just fizzy enough to make it pleasant. You can drink it serve chilled, right out of the can (as I like it) or you can mix it. As-is, it’s a great drink for a girlfriend get-together (use tall stemmed wine glasses or champagne flutes to make it fancy). Pair it with sushi, a fruit and cheese plate, or anything that it light and healthy. You can also mix it with spirits like vodka and gin and try your own concoctions (the recommended amount is to mix 1.5oz of your spirits of choice, fill the rest of the glass with chilled SOCIAL over light ice, and a garnish if you choose). One drink recipe I particularly like is the Golden Girl: 1 oz. rum, 3 oz. Toasted Coconut Almond SOCIAL Enjoyments, .25 oz. Grand Marnier, a squeeze of lime, and garnish with an orange wedge. Easy, elegant, unexpected!
There’s a bit more to the Social Enjoyments story to share: The company gives 1% of its sales to charity (nice touch) and the CEO & Co-Founder, Leah Caplanis was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the young age of 26. Caplanis, who worked for Nestle USA for eight years, not only changed her diet and lifestyle she was inspired to start her own company, SOCIAL Enjoyments. Now in her 30’s, you can hear Caplanis describe SOCIAL Enjoyments and tell her story, in the little (under 3-minute) video above.
SOCIAL Enjoyments is sold mostly in the MidWest where it is brewed, but the company hopes to expand to other states. If you want to buy SOCIAL Enjoyments you can find them for $11.99 a four pack from the Social Enjoyments Web Site and in select stores (mostly in the MidWest) such as Whole Foods, Target, Walgreens, etc. They are definitely SAKE worth seeking out and sipping!
