My mother always said you could tell a well groomed woman from her shoes. If they were polished and the heels weren’t worn down, you could tell she cared about her appearance. I think the same when I see someone with parched, cracked lips that are just crying out for some TLC, even if it’s a simple lip balm. So I’ve culled just a few of my favorite new “lip finds” that are effectively pamper lips and make you want to indulge in more “lip locks” with that special someone.
An easy and elegant way to pamper lips with color, in an easy to use, swivel up, balm-style stick, are the colors of Bobbi Brown’s NEW Sheer Lip Color Collection ($25.00). This super lightweight formula, perfect for summer, delivers a long-lasting slightly glossy, semi-sheer finish while improving the overall condition of lips instantly (and over time). Luxe butters and oils keep lips lubricated, and yet the creamy and shimmery shades stay put for hours. What The Advice Sisters particularly like about this is that it is easy-to-apply color. Just swivel up the slanted stick of color like you would a lip balm, smooth it on (no mirror, base or liner, required) and you’re done! So great Summer, even on the go, the beach, the pool, the plane, the…. There are a bunch (actually, 14) shades of neutral, bright and intense tones, but we’re calling our “Carolina,” a sheer, red/plum that adds color, without too much “va va voom” — just enough to tint lips to a sexier hue. These are available at all Bobbi Brown Cosmetics counters and BobbiBrownCosmetics.com.
For something interesting, easy to apply, and deeply nourishing, try one of brow and makeup artist Ramy Gaffni’s RAMY Lip Oils ($18.00). The clear, glossy oils are delivered through a rollerball (we love this)! and the oils nourish and deep condition dry, parched lips in literally, seconds. The secret is jojoba and almond oils to clam and moisturize, while marine spheres with collagen, plump your pout (slightly, and with a slight tingle). There are three different (subtle) flavors/scents: Mint, Orange and Rose. You can wear these over or under your other lip products as a glosser, but if your lips are really dry and need a lot of TLC, the shine alone, plus the nourishment, will make them instantly, better. The rollerball is an easy, effective and fun way to deliver the goodies to your lips. Get yours at www.ramy.com
The sun’s damaging rays hit your lips at all times, every day of the year, Why not use a protective lip balm that does so much more? One The Advice Sisters like is Lip Resculpt 3D by Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase ($16.99). The clear, super-shiny, vanilla-y scented lip gloss/balm is delivered via an easy to tote and use, slant-tipped squeeze tube. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just a clear and shiny lip gloss. This powerhouse balm blends treatment, protection and beauty by (Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase, claims) “dramatically reshaping lips’ appearance on 3 dimensions: volume, surface area and curvature.” The secret is a Volulip peptide that works on the surface of your skin to double hyaluronic acid production and stimulate collagen (with the help of clinical strength kinetin), while acai sterols repair the skin barrier, healing lips to hold on to moisture. For those of you who have never heard of “kinetin” it’s a powerhouse, anti-oxidant plant complex that stimulates cells at the deepest layers of the skin’s surface and keeps lips looking smooth and youthful, but without exfoliating (so you see results without irritation). The lip enhancement results show up in about 5 minutes. Supposedly, you’ll also enjoy increased moisture even after 20 hours and even more dramatic results after 30 days. * This product may have been re=formulated because on the product The Advice Sisters was sent for review, the product is labelled SPF 15 with Octinoxate 7.5% , Octisalate 5% but currently on mass market sales sites like Walgreens, it is labelled SPF 20 with Octinoxate 7.5% , Octisalate 5% and a slightly higher price-tag of $21.99. I almost pulled this from the article, but I really like the product. I’ll investigate and report back. Meanwhile, it still is a good product worth your consideration, whether it’s SPF 15 or SPF 20.
Who doesn’t desire anything designed by Vera Wang? But the celebrated designer’s gowns are not in everyone’s budget. Luckily, Kohl’s has a entire, enticing collection of women’s fashions, accessories, home goods, and beauty products that people with modest budgets can enjoy from Kohl’s Simply Vera Vera Wang line. Having seen the Fall collection (not out yet, but soon it will be), I am delighted to report that Simply Vera makes Vera Wang style affordable for everyone, even those who are really on slim budgets.
When it comes to beauty, lips get the luxury treatment in a Vera Wang melange of luxe formulas, plus trendy fashion and beauty, thanks to the seven current shades of Vera Wang’s Smoothing Lipcolour ($18.50). The lipstick compact itself is designer-ish — a mixture of clear plastic and shiny black, showing an approximate view of what the actual lipstick bullet color looks like. Inside, there is the real lip lovers treat: a silky, but long-wearing, moisturizing lipstick in a lightweight formula great for now, and throughout the year. You’ll get rich, full coverage color, with lots of moist shine (not goopy or patent leather, but plenty of light-reflecting glow). Conditioners and moisturizers such as shea butter and soybean ester instantly help keep to your lips looking and feeling smooth and soft, while antioxidants, lipid barriers, and vitamin E help protect the lips from environmentalsabateurs. The colors are (as you’d expect from a talented designer), trendy but also somehow, universally flattering. A stand-out color that will take you into Fall is simply called: #712, a berried rose with a hint of gold shimmer that is deep enough to flatter a tan (faux, I hope) and not so intense those with pale complexions can’t rock it, too. Your lips are exposed to all sorts of skin saboteurs day and night, but especially in the Summer, when the sun’s damaging rays are strongest. Mary Kay has a broad spectrum Suncare Lip Protector sunscreen SPF 15 ($7.50) that is your first step to protect your lips, before you put on your favorite lipstick or gloss, or wear it alone. It has actives of 6% Octocrylene; 2.5% Avobenzone and 2% Octinoxate to protect your lips , but it also helps to protect them by sealing in moisture so your lips don’t dry out from sun, sand, sea and wind. It’s also water resistant, fragrance-free and dermatologist tested, so it’s good for everyone. We like the orange-y swivel up balm that makes lips look hydrated, but is so lightweight and silky, you’ll want to use it more often. The price is very reasonable for this priceless protection.
