I’m sure you’ve been hearing a hear a lot about eating well, eating organically, going vegan, or adopting a paleo diet to nourish your body and look leaner and healthier. But you’re probably not hearing so much about feeding your skin to ,look healthier.
In fact, your body absorbs 70% of what goes on your skin, so it makes sense that you should be paying more attention to your daily cleansing and makeup routines.
There are a number of beauty companies that are working on creating natural products, but few that are as dedicated to it as Befine. The company’s approach to beauty is a historical one. Inspired by Cleopatra’s famous milk baths and the Mayans’ use of sunflower oils in their cleansers, founder Florence Sender began to explore making beauty products using food. From this idea and their commitment to “ingredients inspired by nature intended to perform the way nature intended,” Befine was born.
Befine cheekily splits their products into three different “meal” categories: Refreshing Starter Course; Nourishing Main Course; and Indulgent Final Course.
The starter course is comprised of their cleansers and toners, the main courses are their creams and sunscreen and the final course consists of their masks and treatments. Not surprisingly, their most fun products came from their “indulgent” course. Who doesn’t love a little indulgence? And a pomegranate facemask has fewer calories than leftover Halloween candy.
As a new reporter for The Advice Sisters, here are my recommendations from the menu of Befine products:
For the refreshing starter course, the Gentle Cleanser With Sugar, Mint, Oats & Rice is the obvious choice. The cleanser itself is very mild and works into a light lather when being used. The peppermint oil in this product can help to nourish dull skin and boost the texture of oily skin. I loved the light smell of mint before I went to bed and it made my skin very soft.
The runner-up for the starter course is the Exfoliating Cleanser with Brown Sugar, Ginger Root Extract, and Sweet Almond. The grit of brown sugar and almond can help to removes impurities and environmental stresses and give the skin a healthy glow. Who knew a little bit of brown sugar would be all you needed to scrub the grit of the day away?
For the second course, I loved the Night Cream with Cocoa, Millet and Rice Bran. The curl of chocolate on the packaging is enticing and the product doesn’t disappoint. The cream is silky and does smell faintly of chocolate. Which makes it feel less like a “nourishing” part of the routine and more like an indulgence. The cocoa and millet supposedly help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve circulation for better color and clarity and help skin retain critical moisture.
Runner-up: The Daily SPF with Rosemary was also a dream to use and had the added benefits of being a sunscreen/moisturizer duo. The rosemary leaf oil and pomegranate extract in this moisturizer may increase circulation, protect skin from free radical damage, and heal skin by accelerating tissue repair.
The final course is the fun course. Befine offers lip scrubs and serums, eye serum and masks. My favorite was the Warming Clay Mask with Cardamom, Arnica and Pomegranate. A good at-home mask can make you feel like you’ve just been to the spa but you get to stay in bed reading while the mask works its magic. This warming clay mask really gets hot on contact and you can feel it working and lifting oil from your pores. Active ingredients in this product claim to deep clean and detoxify, hydrate skin and help to stabilize free radicals. The spices and the warmth make it the perfect mask for autumn, especially for a rainy November day.
What makes Befine special, is that they balance good-for-you benefits with fun, decadent beauty products. It’s great that with Befine you don’t have to choose between natural and luxury when it comes to beauty.
Make a “meal” of products as a great gift for a best friend, sister or mom this holiday season. All of the products in this article can be bought in tubes of 5.6 oz with twist- off tops for $24.99 or in single serve packets. Befine’s packaging is part of what makes it a great gift. The boxes highlight the natural food ingredients by displaying a beautiful photo of a pomegranate or a mint leaf. It makes the products look simple and sleek on a medicine cabinet.
PS: If you don’t tell anyone that I employed the “one for you, one for me” strategy when it came to buying Befine products for my friends, I won’t tell anyone if you do the same!
