Next to trying on bathing suits, there’s no piece of clothing that makes even thin women feel insecure, as trying on jeans. Although they are a staple in today’s society, many women have a hard time finding jeans that fit their curves, feel comfortable, and actually look good. I have a hard time thinking that beautiful Brazilian women would have such feelings, but in fact, I’ve just been introduced to a brand of jeans that are not only from Brazil, but actually fit real women: Beija-Flor Brazilian jeans! Yes, very good (and fashionable) things come from Brazil: supermodels, carnival, beaches, coffee (just to name a few)…and Beija-Flor jeans.
Kathy Moça and her daughter Emilie Whitaker, are athe mother/daughter team to thank for these great jeans. Together they developed the brand, inspired by Emilie’s childhood memories of the beautiful hummingbird museum in her father’s home state. Portuguese for hummingbird, Beija-Flor literally means “kiss the flower”.
Not all jeans are created equal. Designers are not equally understanding that not all women are built the same way. But Beija-Flor Brazilian designer jeans are made to fit the natural curves of a woman’s body without being baggy, saggy or simply sorry looking. enough. There are a number of styles (e.g. boot cut, skinny, straight) with most running around $170 srp. in a small number of colors: white, black, grey, blue (of course), pink, and shimmer fabric. There are also companion pieces such as jean jackets, cropped pants, and skirts.
The Advice Sisters have reviewed a number of brands of jeans in our What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review columns. I actually do wear them. Most are ok to good, but these jeans are something special. Now that I have found Beija-Flor jeans I’m absolutely loving them! Off your body, they look like any other pair of nicely-crafted, designer jeans. They have even stitching, lots of details (mine had tiny rhinestones that sparkled on the metal fastener button) and an embroidered Beija-Flor Jeans logo of a golden hummingbird that cleverly appears to be flying out of a front pocket. But as I tentatively slipped my feet through the legs and started to pull the jeans up (without a struggle), I realized that these were super soft and almost silky on my skin. The socially and environmentally-conscious denim doesn’t stretch out even though they have a fair amount of give. Even more importantly, these jeans were amazingly comfortable–no pinching, binding, pulling, irritation. No other jeans I’ve ever worn, even those with lightweight stretch like these, feel like they actually pamper your body!
When I zipped up the jeans (without a struggle) and looked in the mirror, I got another, happy surprise. There was absolutely no gapping or sagging but these jeans also didn’t feel overly tight or restrictive. I feel as free as the Beija-Flor hummingbird logo –free as a bird! And the jeans accentuated all the right places, and downplayed the ones I don’t really love to put on display. The rise was low, but not ridiculously so. Beija-Flor’s popular “Jennifer” jean, for example, is a bit higher than the front so when you sit down, you’re not showing extra skin. If you have a back tattoo, maybe you won’t think this is soo great. However, if you’re past those teenage years and don’t display “tats” so readily, you probably don’t really like “hanging out” of your pants, either. The sizes are also a plus, in easy-to-understand sizes that run like women’s pants: 0-16. No more “guessing” what size European or men’s size you are.
Although these jeans are particularly good for women who struggle with fit, they would be great for those with too little to show, as well. Twin sets of silvery grommets on the back pockets show off whatever “junk the the trunk” you have, and curved pockets make you look “all girl” even if you are built like a boy.
If Beija-Flor hadn’t sent me a pair of these jeans to road test, I would have been dubious, but I’ve spent many a frustrating hour tugging, struggling, and sighing when jeans shopping. Like Cinderella’s slipper, these just slid on as if they were made for me, and have made me a believer in Beija-Flor’s beauty and comfort. Let these jeans work their magic on you, too:
