|The “Advice Sisters” a long time ago in Barbados!|
My first trip on an airplane, was to the beautiful island of Barbados, over the Christmas holiday. Although it was many, many years ago, one of the things I remember most (besides the amazing beach right outside the door of our villa) was a visit to town, and the department store, Cave Shepherd. The first floor was literally, littered with trays and trays and trays of tems made from a pretty, brown material that I didn’t recognize That brown stuff, turned out to be genuine Tortoise Shell.

Tortoiseshell or tortoise shell is a material produced mainly from the shell of the hawksbill turtle. Although it was widely used in the 1960’s and ’70’s, now it is an endangered species.
Today, if you want something of tortoishell, it will be made of a material that mimics the appearance of the real thing. But the flattering, warm, semi-translucent tortoishell is still a beloved, classic material for accessories, such as jewelery, and eye glass frames.
