Ask any artist what is a must-have to create something special, and their first answer (after talent) is “good tools.” Whether you’re a makeup magician, or a clueless newbie, a good makeup brush in your hand is worth dozens of disposable, mini applicators! All kidding and analogies aside, good makeup brushes will make any effort you make, better. While you don’t have to spend a fortune to get decent makeup brushes, you do need to spend a little time considering which ones you want, and which brush lines will work best for you. A good makeup brush, or an entire set, is a memorable gift.
A unique take on brushes is the KLIX Make UP Brush set with replaceable heads (srp $59.95). A set of three brushes: powder, blush and foundation/concealer, arrive with smooth, shiny, black plastic handles. But they have a secret: there’s a push button in the bottom of each brush handle. Push it in, and the brush head pops out. That means you can replace a worn or dirty brush head, merely with the click of a button. The KLIX brush heads are recyclable, made from soft, synthetic white bristles that let you see when the brush head needs to be replaced. The brush heads are soft and easy to use, but instead of washing them over and over again, or not washing them and risking pushing bacteria all over your face, you can simply replace the heads. If you’re wondering why this would be so fantastic, ask yourself: “when was the last time I washed my makeup brushes?: If you can’t remember, or the answer is: “never,” KLIX will break you of this bad habit.
Dirty makeup brushes harbor bacteria and dirt, which can make your skin break out, and contaminate your otherwise-clean makeup compacts. But honestly, who has time to wash and dry brushes? There are different replacement heads that come nicely boxed, two to a box: The Foundation brush set is priced at $9.95; the Blush Brush retails for $10.95; the Powder Brush is priced at $11.95. Although I didn’t review them, the line also includes a set of two Kabuki Brushes that retail for $19.95. These KLIX brushes are not exactly disposable, but almost. At an individual replacement price of under $6.00 for most of the brush heads, it’s a no brainer to simply pop out the old and dirty one, push in a new one!

For powder. you really need a brush with a generous, dome-shaped head. Japonesque’s is $38.00. If you wish you can use a large powder brush for your blush, but it’s much better to keep the products, and the color tones, separate. Japonesque’s blush brust is also $38.00. Use your fingertips if you must, but if you can spring for $14.50 you can get Japonesque’s Concealer Brush that lets you get into tiny corners, and blend, better.
