Leather jacket or designer shoes have got you singing the budget blues? No need to fret. The Advice Sisters have always believed that there are fabulous products in every price point, and quite frankly, even the priciest product isn’t going to do you any good if it’s not the right product for you (and/or you don’t use it properly). Once you take a product out of the packaging, and it’s on your skin, no one knows if it cost a few dollars, or a few hundreds. So if you’ve been saving up for a fabulous coat or jacket, a pair of boots, or another significant (and pricey) addition to your wardrobe, with little left for new beauty products, trust me, the beauty products below will have you feeling luxe, trendy. and pampered, for a little more than pennies. You CAN have it all!
Bioré® Deep Cleansing Pore Strips ($7.99) feature new packaging, but after a Summer of clogged pores from sweat, dirt, and sun blocks, a pore strip is an easy way to clean your pores. These will get rid of pore clogging build-up, dirt and oil that can cause blackheads. Plus, with regular use they can actually reduce the appearance of your pores. So instead of squeezing blackheads with your fingernails (this can leave behind tiny tears in the skin and spread acne-causing bacteria), get a package of Bioré® Deep Cleansing Pore Strips and lift away “the gunk” without having to spring for a salon facial. To be honest, I take some delight in seeing the little “gardens” of pore-clogging “yuk” on the strips. It’s easy and sort of fun, too!
These days, it seems that everyone has a BB or a CC cream. Most of them hydrate and protect with a little (or a lot) of SPF, and most of them contain luminizers and/or some sort of sheer or semi-sheer tint. They’re fabulous, and great to wear under makeup, or alone. But BB creams can also end up becoming shiny, or sliding off your face when you least want them to One that hit the marketplace in July and that is affordable at just $9.99 is the new Ponds Luminous Finish BB+ Cream. It has all the bells and whistles you’d want in a BB cream, but it stays put while it packs a punch with Vitamin E Acetate (known to protect and repair skin), Glycerin to increase hydration, and SPF 15 to protect against the sun’s damaging rays. The colors choices are Light or Medium, and both were sheer enough to flatter my freckled, medium/light complexion because they are so sheer. But the product also smoothed out some imperfections and dark spots even though the formula isn’t mask-like. If your skin is really deep, these two colors, even though they are sheer, would work better as a primer under your own, deeper toned foundation. Still, the shades will work for a lot of complexions. The reason I like this particular BB so much is that it really feels like a luxurious product that does a lot for my face, but it didn’t make my sensitive skin break out, and it wasn’t sticky, nor did it get “shiny” on me after a few hours. It won’t clog pores, and it’s hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested. The actives are Octinoxate 7.49%, and Zinc Oxide 5.12%. It’s a veritable workhorse in a pink tube with silver cap. Where is it written that a budget-friendly body wash can’t have the same sophistication as a fine fragrance? It’s just not so! In fact, the new Tempting Whisper Body Wash from Caress has a fine fragrance developed by none other than the famed fragrance house, Givaudan. This luxurious (but so affordable) body wash has top, heart and bottom notes, just like any fine fragrance. The top notes are red plum, tempting turberose, and night jasmine. These are the notes you smell when you first open the top and take a sniff (according to fragrance “nose” Nicole Mancini, from Givaudan. The middle notes (the ones you smell in the bathroom when you’re finished with your shower) are wild peony and lily of the valley. The bottom notes stick around on your skin after the others have dried down and blown off, and in Tempting Whisper, the main note is tonka bean. But the fragrance is light, lovely, sophisticated and lets you smell nice for hours. That’s a whole lot of lovely, for an average cost of under $5.50 for 12 fl. oz. The bottle is a bold fuchsia with a sloping flip top that looks exciting and elegant on your tub or shower.
Maybe that’s why at the launch event, it was spokesperson and “fabulista” actress LaLa Anthony, who was actually gushing about the fragrance, as well as giving some fashion tips to editors. LaLa is adorable, and personable. Her fave trends this season (besides Tempting Whisper Fine Fragrance Elixer Body Wash) is floral print dresses and gold pink accessories. I couldn’t resist taking a photo with LaLa (check out her amazing white dress) and the J. Crew Necklace I was gifted (sometimes, life is really good)! Lavanilla’s Healthy Sunscreen SPF 40 for face might be a tiny splurge for some on tight budgets, but at $28.00 for 1.8 oz. it might be priceless (if you love it, you’ll use it, and saving your skin is worth the price) This “healthy” beauty product touts itself as a “100% Natural SPF 40″ using a ” new generation of mineral sunscreen” for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. In actuality, the sun protection comes from 5% zinc oxide and 7.5% Titanium Dioxide, and contains absolutely no Parabens, Petrochemicals, Phthalates, Silicones, Propylene Glycol, Mineral Oils, Synthetic Dyes, Sulfates, Chemical Sunscreens, or Aluminum. The pleasant to use, rich cream is dispensed from a flip top tube. There are antioxidants, botanicals and amino acids,to nourish skin. The product is fragrance-free, although Lavanilla is known for it’s delightful, vanilla-centric scents. Zinc Oxide can leave an ashy, white residue on your skin, and although Lavanilla touts this sun screen as being non whitening, I could see a bit of a “ghost” on my fairly fair, skin. But if you are planning to wear a foundation or other tinted product on top anyway, it’s not an issue. If you are seeking a safe and natural product that works well, on all skin types, won’t clog pores, and is nice to use, you can’t go wrong with this one.
