Christina Aguilera is young, sexy, famous, and supremely talented. For Valentines’ Day, treat yourself (or a drop a hint) that you are inspired by more than just her music. Here are two of Christina’s fragrances that will make young women everywhere feel beautiful and empowered. Keep in mind, when you’re thinking of buying a “celebrity” fragrance for yourself or someone else, that celebrity fragrances are all the rage. Some come in beautiful packaging, and some are just ok. All offer a way for fans to feel closer to the stars they admire. And some are truly wonderful with or without the celebrity name attached.
Aguilera’s By Night scent is quite soft, although it’s inspired by red, the most intense color also associated with heat and spice: RED. The top notes include: mandarin, red apple, freesia, almond accord; heart notes are vanilla flower, peach; and the base notes are amber and black vanilla.
I don’t really smell the spices that would make this a true oriental scent. Only at complete drydown do you really smell amber and vanilla in the base. It is slightly spicey and a less brightly fruited version of a fruity floral. That makes it appropriate for a chic young woman, but not as heavy and overpowering as a true oriental scent. Since Ms Aguilera’s fans are younger this fragrance strikes the right note (pun, intended) with her potential customers.
The packaging is pretty — an outer box is blood red with an overlay of black lace. It seems to follow the passion young women seem to have for vampires and creatures of “the night.” Inside, there is a curvaceous glass flacon that looks almost like a woman’s body, but it’s all sharp, flat curves. The bottle is nearly blacked out at the top, clear at the bottom to showcase the deep pink/red juice inside. A silhouette of black lacy flowers peeks out from the bottom of the blackened portion of the bottle. I like it because it is feminine, but still a bit “edgy.” A black spray diffuser is ringed by a tiny, black rose and there is just a tiny bit of red right at the diffuser hole. A clear, grey plastic faceted jewel tops the diffuser. It’s lovely!
Another fragrance option for Aguilera fans is a softly seductive scent simply called by the singer’s name: Christina Aguilera. The box has a similar design to By Night. This time, the black lace graphics appear on a white and grey background with Chrsitina Aguilera” in red. Inside the box nestles a bottle in the same lovely, “womanly” shape as the other fragrances, this time presented in clear glass on three sides, with a stencil of black lace and flowers on the front. a tiny satin ribbon bow at the neck, and the same jeweled topper (this time in clear plastic). The design I’m told, was inspired by the dress that Marcel Rochas created for Mae West. Interesting, and Aguilera channels Mae West a bit in her own style but there’s little of the saucy Mae in the fragrance mix. Instead, Aguilera fans will enjoy a light “floriental” as it is formally categorized. But to my nose, it’s really more of a subtle floral, with only a bit of spice. Top notes include Mandarin, Peach, Blackcurrant with Middle Notes of : Jasmine, Stephanotis, Lily of the Valley, Peony, and Plum, plus a more sensual base of Amber, Vanilla, Musk, Sandalwood. Ms. Aguilera chose notes that have special meaning to her and I think that’s quite romantic, don’t you? For example, the jasmine in the heart notes reminds her of old Hollywood glamour. And there are notes that remind her of her honeymoon in Bali. Given that Aguilera’s audience is supposedly teens to twenty-something, I’d suggest young twenties, the scent will probably be considered “sexy” scent for that age group. However, on more mature women this scent may be a bit too focused on the sweet notes of flowers and vanilla.
That being said, scent is a very personal preference. If you love the singer, if you love the package, and you love the romance of this fragrance, go for it! And be sure to get the matching body products including lotion, bath gel and deodorant. It’s available as an Eau de Parfum in .5oz,; 1oz, and1.6oz at Kohls and various online sites. For a young fan on a budget, these fragrances offer easy access: $39.00 buys you a 1.6 fl. oz. bottle of the scent. That’s fairly inexpensive for a celebrity fragrance.
