ColorProof Hair Care Review: It’s What’s Inside That Counts
by Alison Blackman
These days, everything is personalized, so why not hair care? That’s part of the reason I love ColorProof. Another reason is the developer, Jim Markham. He started at the bottom as a lowly barber trying to support his young wife and baby as a mere teenager, and worked his way up to a celebrity hairstylist. But he also was involved with so many good quality hair care brands including being the founder and owner of Pureology.
While Purelogy is still loved for its sulfate-free formulas and eco-friendly practices, thing have gone even further with the launch ColorProof Evolved Color Care in 2011. Mr. Markham said that he realized color care technology hadn’t advanced much since he launched Pureology over a decade ago and he wanted to create something that took advantage of new formulas, ingredients, and technology. I was impressed by the way he looks at crafting products, from the quality of the ingredients needed to make a good product first, not the price.
ColorProof- It’s what’s inside that counts:
The main focus of ColorProof is to offer ingredients designed to help improve the condition of colored hair while maximizing color retention, No matter how careful you are with your colored hair, repeated shampooing, heat styling, and even sun exposure can cause hair color to become faded and damaged.
The ColorProof formulas resistfding and help to reverse damage by utilizing a proprietary combination of the technology and ingredients including what ColorProof calls their “ADVANCED COLORLAST SYSTEMTM FEATURING CHROMAVEIL® & HELIOGENOL® lthat work to protect your hair from the sun’s UVA/UVB rays, and a proprietary blend of 7 surfactants (sufactants being what helps cleasers to foam). The ones in ColorProof are salt and sulfate-free. Many sulfate-free shampoos don’t foam and your hair doesn’t really have that clean feeling, but in my tests with ColorProof shampoos, even without the salt and sulfates, they foamed and made my hair feel clean and refreshed while still protecting my color (no one wants their color to wash out, with the wash)!
ColorProof products also protect your hair with nano-particles that let the actives penetrate more deeply into your hair shaft to strengthen, repair, add shine, increase color vibrancy and deliver maximum color and heat protection while dramatically improving hair condition like never before possible. Plus the formulas have anti-aging ingredients and heat protectants. For those who care, it’s certified organic botanicals that provide the nourishing conditioning, too.
ColorProof is Personalized Hair Care:
There are a number of different collections, including one of styling products and one of finishing products. The names pretty are fairly expalanatory: BAOBAB HEAL & REPAIRTM; CRAZYSMOOTH®; TRUCURL®; SUPERPLUMP®; SUPERRICH®; SIGNATUREBLONDETM; STYLE; FINISH and THE ESSENTIALSTM.
But what’s great about this is that you can mix and match ColorProof hair care products, so for example, if your hair is curly, but you want frizz protection and you also want to do some damage control, you can pull from Baobab Heal & Repair, CrazySmooth and TruCurl…no one will say “bad, bad…stick to your collection of you won’t get good results!”
Each editor was sent home with a collection of hair care essentials, personally selected for them by Mr. Markham. Although there are plenty of other products I might have tried, it didn’t surprise me that Mr Markham quickly suggested all the products from the Crazy Smooth collection to tame frizz for me (so much for my declaration that you can mix and match products, but I really live fighting a daily battle with frizz, and I’m sure he immediately understood that).
In the Summertime when heat and humidity are high, or if you live in a place where it tends to be humid, this is the collection you’ll probably want to try first. The CrazySmooth line uses a proprietary blend of exclusive oils including Camellia Oil from Japan and Abyssinian Oil from Africa, with seaweed and shea butter, in a 100% moisturizing and vegan formula. It also helps protect your hair against heat stylers.
While ColorProof says it’s great for every day use, most anti-frizz formulas tend to make my hair look oily and dirty in a day. In my tests with Crazy Smooth I had three full days of smooth and shiny hair before I had to shampoo again. My hair was soft and I was very happy with the results.
When all the smoothers and soothers can be a bit much, so I also got (from the Essentials collection) the ClearItUp® Detox Shampoo with baking soda and Vitamins C and E to gently cleanse and deodorize hair while removing dulling build-up, but unlike some clarifying shampoos, this one won’t strip your color. It nicely removed oil, perspiration and styling products (safely!) making my hair feel really clean again. Tip: when you use a Clarifying shampoo condition and/or ues a hair masque afterwards, or your hair may feel dry.
To finish things off, I received (from the Finish) line the HumidityRx® Anti-Frizz Weatherproof Spray that helps to keep humidity out and keep your style in. It’s good for all hair types, not just frizzballs.
