Everyone has a bad hair day now and then, but if your hair consistenly looks like it needs TLC, the good news is that there are products that really do improve the health of your hair. Get rid of the evidence of frizzled, dry, damaged, or baked by chemicals and heat stylers-hair. Everyone can benefit from products that smooth, soothe, moisturize, nurture and protect their hair. In this huge, 2-part review, we’re talking about shampoos and conditioners in this Part 1. The second part is about styling products and hair-helping tools.
When you find a product that works, and that you love, what a delightful experience it must be to be able to buy the company! After a hair emergency where Dalal Moussa first tried Obliphica Professional, she was so impressed with the products, she bought the company! I first discovered these products at a BeautyPress Editor’s event. I’ve been impressed even though the name is difficult to remember! At the heart is natural Sea Buckthorn Berry that has 14 essential vitamins to help prevent free radical damage. The products also have Omega fatty acids, including Omegas 3, 6, 9 and the incredibly rare and powerful Omega 7 that it needs to grow healthier, stronger and shinier with every use. There are two different product formulas: Fine to Medium (orange packaging) and Medium to Coarse (purple packaging). I tried the latter, and found it to be extremely nourishing and pleasant. The shampoos and conditioners are priced on par with other salon brands (around $24,00) but the serums are $38.00 and the hair masks are $36.00 and $58.00. This is a professional line of products, but you can get them online at Ulta and other online retailers, or ask your salon to carry it. Visit the Obliphica Professional web site to learn more.
Keratin is the big star of haircare this year to smooth soften, de-friz and nourish hair. It’s no surprise that keratin makes it into a dry shampoo. Keratherapy’s new Dry Shampoo (approx. $19.50 for 5 oz. ) is an affordable, effective way to refresh and remove excess oil and residue without having to shampoo. For those who swear by dry shampoo, you’ll be happy to know that this works on all hair colors and textures because it won’t leave that tell-takle powdery residue behind. It has a soft floral scent and it doesn’t have any Sulfate, Paraben, Gluten or Sodium Chloride free. Obviously, with a name like Keratherapy you expect the products to feature keratin and deliver smooth, silky and frizz‐free hair and they deliver, with 6 professional salon treatments and 17 maintenance products . You can most easily find Keratherapy products in salons and on the Keratherapy web site
Ouidad is a real woman, and the queen of curly hair. She was a pioneer in setting up salons for those with curls and curly hair issues. While the products are specifically formulated for those with curly hair, a lot of the products work for every type of hair. For example, we like the Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave in Conditioner which comes in three sizes starting at just $10.00 for a 2.5 fl. oz. plastic flip top bottle great for travel. There is also an 8.5 oz. for $26.00 and 33.8 oz. size for $70.00 . If you have curls, this leave-in conditioner (add just a little, post-shampoo and before styling) will give your hair some bounce and moisture and encourages a nice looking curl pattern, but it won’t make hair greasy. The press information also says that the product is free of residues and polymers that interfere with styling (it works best on curly hair, long hair and thick hair). Arnica Extract and anti-oxidants protect curls and create healthy, glossy shine. If your hair isn’t curly, a tiny bit of this product still seems to silken and shine. Try it! Ouided has dozens of nourishing and styling products including a bunch of travel sized products (I particularly like Shine Glaze Serum and Finishing Mist each $10.00). Get yours on the Ouidad Web Site
I was given some samples of L’Anza hair products at an event at the Ammon Carver Salon (111 west 17th street) when I attended a Fall DIY hair event. When I got home and read more about the line, I realized that this is serious hair care that truly pampers. The L’anza Keratin Healing Oil Shampoo 10.1 & Conditioner 8.5 oz Duo (set is $48.00 for 1.7 fl. oz. travel sizes – larger size is $48.00 for the shampoo) features Keratin Protein to increase volume, strength and health. The shampoo also contains Lanza’s Phyto IV Complex, a special blend of four botanical oils: Abyssinian Flower Oil, Coffee Seed Oil, Acai Fruit Flower, Babassu Kernel Oil. The good for all hair types and color-protecting formula makes hair soft and shiny, and it’s also free of sulfates, parabens, gluten & sodium chloride. With all those emollients I expected my hair to feel greasy, but it was just soft, bouncy and shiny! You can find all the L’Anza products online in various places but for more information (and a product locator) visit the L’Anza web site. Beauty Tip: At Ammon Carver my stylist showed me how to use a flat iron so that the top of your hair isn’t flat (which makes ponytails and updos look severe). The trick is to hold the flat iron away from your face curled 1/4 or 1/2 turn and hold for a few seconds, then pull the flat iron flat through the rest of your hair. The result? A “lift” at the crown, straight or curved at the ends.
Who doesn’t know VO5 hair products? VO5 is a classic. It’s Alberto VO5’s 60th anniversary! In 1955 creator Alberto, developed VO5 hair conditioning treatment to keep Hollywood starlets’ hair looking healthy and beautiful under the bright Hollywood lights. Since then, the brand has created a number of other innovative products using its five essential vitamins including their Hot Oil Therapy Intense Moisturizing (srp. $4.50) to the new Alberto VO5 Shine, Glow & Go Beauty Oil I’m excited to share the new Shine, Glow & Go in this hair review. It multi-tasks as a moisturizing oil for your skin as well. The ingredients include argan & shea oils and 5 essential vitamins plus sunflower seed oil, burity seed oil, Macadamia seed oil, argan oil, coconut oil and grapeseed oil, and for fragrance, Honeysuckle. If your skin is dry, use this right after your bath or shower. It looks like it would be greasy, but don’t worry! The fruity/floral scented oil absorbs almost immediately and it really works well on super dry skin as well as on your hair.Use it on wet or dry hair (jut a little goes a long way) to smooth the frizzies and add shine plus it makes hair softer, too. I have recently discovered White Sands products, and one product in particular that wowed me is the White Sands The Cure 24/7 Hair Cell Renewal 3.38 Oz ($29.99 srp.). This is one of those products you might not be convinced you need, until you try it! The Cure 24/7 is a hard working multi-tasker that gives you nearly instant results in a treatment that you can do around the clock, whenever you choose. Treat your hair we or dry (that’s a bonus). The formula blends natural botanicals and cell renewal technology to deal with split ends and damaged hair fibers so your hair is stronger and smoother. A quarter-sized amount is all you need on wet or dry hair (avoid your scalp). The key to this little wonder is a scientific process called “cellular bridging” with micro -gels so tiny you can’t see them, but you will see the results as they instantly fill cracks in your hair’s cuticle and the magic lasts up to a week. White Sands products are luxurious and the prices are on the high end, but consider: a little goes a long way and the results..priceless! Learn more on the White Sands Website
