For many people, Summer is a time for travel. But if you’ve spent your last precious dollars on that dream trip, you still will need to consider taking along some beauty products — and you don’t have to spend a fortune for things that help make travel easier, and more satisfying. Here are nine budget friendly products that The Advice Sisters think are true travel “finds.” Of course these are also fabulous for at-home use, too.
For nearly eight decades, Boots No 7 has been in the beauty business. But they only really arrived in the United States a few years ago, selling at Target and target.com. Boots has recently re-launched their No7 Cosmetics range, along with 10 new additions. We like the slim, silvery lipstick just $9.99 each called: Boots No7 Sheer Temptation Lipstick. The glossy sticks of color slide on easily, even over not-so-perfect, lips. The color is glossy, but not “obvious.” You can apply it from the tube when you’re on the go, or make it look more polished, with a lip brush. The lippies are hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested. The slim design makes it nice for travel bags, everywhere.
When it comes to eyes, color, especially bold color, is the new trend. The Boots No7 Stay Precise Liquid Liner (srp. $8.99) is an easy way to add some color without going wild with it. For example, “Sky High” is a brilliant blue the color of the deep Caribbean sea, but a thin line against your lashes makes a fresh statement. If blue if not for you, try “Bohemian,” a deep and blackened aubergine that looks more modern than brown or black, but it still traditional enough not to raise eyebrows in conservative work environments. The liners dry quickly, and come in 4 other shades too (yes, even a Brown/Black for those who just can’t do without it). If you are limiting the eye shadows you take in your travel bag, colored mascaras and liners let you get more mileage out of your eyes looks.
If you have thin lashes and don’t want to damage them with an eyelash curler (or don’t want to take it another item in your travel bag), the Boots No7 Exquisite Curl Mascara ($7.99) is a good choice. The curved bristle wand (and it is really well shaped) lets you get to every lash, and curl it up to 90 degrees. Plus, Pro-vitamin B5 conditions and moisturizes the lashes, preventing them from becoming brittle. To keep your curl going all day or evening long, the product contains a “memory curl polymer” that forms a protective layer on the curl of your lashes. The mascara is also supposed to add volume, but if your lashes are very blonde, you’ll need several coats to get volume along with color. Speaking of which, it comes in two shades: Black, and Brown/Black. The Brown/Black is still fairly soft.

The average amount of water in a human body is about 60%. We must have water in our bodies and in our skin, to survive. It’s the ultimate beauty product and it is free (or almost free). Without water, we’d shrivel up and die. But when you’re on the go it is sometimes difficult to hydrate properly. The Advice Sisters have had a love affair with a unique water bottle system is simply called: the Bobble. Bobble has a re-useable filter system attached to the drinking spout that sits inside the bottle to filter any water you put inside it. The bottles are available in a number of sizes. What makes Bobble unique, is that it filters while you drink, which means that no matter what the water source you’re drinking from (e.g. the water fountain at the airport or train station), your water will be pure, safe, and delicious. The plastic is 100% recyclable, and free of BPA, Phthalates and PVC.
A Bobble bottle will filter the equivalent of at least 300 water bottles, with a carbon filter that is a proven, powerful chemical absorbent. As water passes over the filter, the negative ions of contaminants are drawn to the carbon granules, where they remain. The filtered water has a cleaner, crisper taste and meets or exceeds NSF International Standard 42, the standard that governs public and private drinking water. Instead of paying for individual bottles of Spring water, you can use water from the tap to male any water taste better and healthier, while saving our planet from even more plastic throw-away bottles.
The original Bobbles have an individual, clear cap over the drinking spout, but you have to find a safe place to put the cap while you’re using it. For sports enthusiasts and for travel, there’s the Bobble Sport ($9.95) with an attached cap. Instead of the traditional clear base with colored filter, these bobbles come in a bunch of semi-opaque tints with matching caps, including cheerful yellow, green, purple, grey, red, blue, and pink. The sport-ready water bottle holds 24oz and uses the same, replaceable carbon filter as original bobble. These filters remove chlorine and organic contaminants from municipal tap. makes water taste better, crisp and clean. They are dishwasher safe (the bottles, not the filters).
If you’re not inclined to drink enough water, and/or you want to do something “green” for our planet, consider that if you use a bobble for a year, you have, on your own, removed thousands of bottles from the environment, simply by filtering the water from your tap. . Once you get a Bobble, you’ll never travel anywhere without. TIP: Bring Bobble empty to the airport and fill it once you get past security, saving money and time. I won’t fly or travel without one anymore!
You can find Bobble products in a wide variety of retailers and places like Whole Foods, but for more information and more Bobble-entric accessories and replacement filters, visit: http://www.waterbobble.com/
Security restrictions have made bringing a bunch of big (or liquid/spread-able) beauty products onto an airplane, a thing of the past. But we need our cosmetics! The Advice Sisters recommend substituting any liquids for pencils and powders, and if you must bring something in a bottle, make it a mini. Here are three great products from MARK that won’t cost much, but will pay priceless beauty dividends at home, or on the road. Get yours at http://www.meetmark.com/ or from your favorite MARK representative.
Color Me In Lip Crayons for Eyes and for Lips ($12.00 each) let you get long lasting color, and they won’t raise eyebrows with the TSA. They fit easily into a beach tote, too. For eyes, There is a trio of Color Me In Eye Crayons in a shimmery formula (blend for a wash, or go bold with metallic) with cream to a powder finish, intense shadows, in stick form. The crayons are really soft, but extremely versatile because you can finesse them from a wash of color to an intense “drag queen” look, and even use them as a liner. Wild Blue is a trendy turquoise, Go Gold is a 14K luxe gold, and The Advice Sisters like light, almost delicate, Mint Candy mixed with either of the other two, or on it’s own. Beauty Tip: for fun, add a colored mascara, like MARK’s Scanda-Lash Go-To-Mascara ($11.00) in “Violet.”
For fabulous lips, try the Color Me In Lip Crayons with a sheer, glossy finish to flatter even less than perfect lips. Honey Dip is a soft caramel, Punch Line is a glossy pink, and there is also the slightly more intense, berried, Wine Bar. What we like so much is that while the application is smooth, effortless and creamy, the color stays put. If you tend to perspire a lot around the lip line, you will especially appreciate the fact that these don’t tend to “stray” where you don’t want them to.
No one wants to waste precious space in their stingy little “quart zip lock” bag for a big bottle of nail polish, and frankly, unless you’re going away for a very long time, you aren’t going to need more than a touch-up. That’s why I love MARK’s limited edition, 0.09 fl. oz. Nail It! Marrakesh Mini Nail Lacquer ($7.00) in two trendy colors. Saffron,” gives nails a starry wash (or full coverage), glitzy gold, and “Mint Tea,” is a shimmery, deep forest green that is going to be your favorite well into Fall (if it lasts that long). These are small enough to tuck into a tiny bag, but there is enough polish for many touch-ups, or for at least three full mani/pedis.
For a travel-friendly treat, get the limited edition Exotic Hues ($14.00) . This highly pigmented and shimmery trio of baked eye shadows are housed in a small, clear, , lightweight, rectangular compact that has a mini-sized dual-ended applicator brush (shadow/liner) nestled in the side. The colors of green, spice and gold are reminiscent of the vibrant spices found in the City souks of Marrakesh. Used dry they give a shimmery wash of color (or more if you layer) but used wet, the provide sexy, metallic glamour. Beauty Tip: So blendable you can use a fingertip to smooth a bit over one of the Color Me In Eye Crayons, to modify the color and add even more shimmer.
Despite the TSA requiring that you put your liquids into that tiny, clear, zip-top quart bag, many women still believe in keeping their beauty booty in stylish totes (and these days, less people are flying due to ever-increasing scrutinty and inconveniences). For them, Modella’s 2013 collection offers a number of adorable organizer bags in a riot of colors, patterns, and styles, inspired by the runway. The collection retails between $2.97 and $21.97 (for a 6-piece fitted duffle set) One that The Advice Sisters think is big enough for must-haves, but still small enough to store in your purse, is the Wild The Cats Away Organizer (Price: $7.97) is the perfect item to stay organized and stylish this summer!
This pattern also comes in a Fitted Organizer ($12.99) that has a nylon buffer puff, and two mini-sized )guessing 1 oz.) bottles with flip top lids to hold a weekend’s worth of your favorite shampoo and conditioner, or any other bath product you can’t live without on the road. There’s also a washable foldover clutch ($8.99) and washable drawstring bags ($12.99) neither of which I saw, but I’m thinking they’ll be very nice since the other two Modella organizers are. These may be bargain priced, but they’re not chintzy. The outside of the bags are nylon, and the inside and outside of the bag are water-resistant vinyl, to sop up spills should they happen. The handles and trim are also vinyl. Zippers have easy to tug, extra large pulls and even the snaps are substantial and secure. Availability: Wal-Mart & Walgreens.
Smart travelers take just what they need, nothing more. But sometimes you just find you’ve run out of underwear, or that silk blouse you were saving for a special dinner has a spot. And if you have invested money in a sexy swimsuit, you really need to get the chemicals, salt, sand and sun protection lotion of out it every time you wear it. Roux Maison has a collection of eco-friendly home laundry products that come in large size for home use, and 1 fl. oz. bottles, perfect for travel. The Swimwear Detergent ($14.50/ 3 1-oz, bottles) is fragrance-free. and actually helps to maintain the elasticity, shape and color of your swimwear while it whisks away chlorine, body oils, salt and sunscreen. The Delicate Laundry Detergent ($14.25/ 3 1-oz. bottles) is also fragrance-free and is safe for even delicate fabrics like silk and synthetics and for lingerie, hosiery and shapewear. It is engineered to break down and remove perspiration salts, body oils, and stains but it doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals that could unnecessarily shorten the lifespan of your items. While The Advice Sisters suggest hand washing delicates, this product will work with all types of washing machines, including High Efficiency HE (use the delicates setting and/or a lingerie bag).
