Equitance from Japan is a skincare line focusing on bright, luminous skin
By Alison Blackman
Japanese women have always worked hard for their prized, clear, bright, luminous skin. No wonder products from Japan are finding a lot of interest elsewhere, giving skincare fans a whole bunch of new and exciting products to try.
Recently, the Advice Sisters got a chance to try Equitance, an integrated skin care line from Japan by Sunstar that was 18 years in the making, although Sunstar was founded in Japan in 1932 with products reaching 90 countries around the world.
Dim the dark spots with Equitance: Dark spots are one of the most challenging skincare issues to handle without costly intervention such as laser treatments. Topical treatments can work, at least a little, to brighten skim ,but this route takes time, dedication and often, a lot of patience. That said, Equitance claims two breakthroughs that makes their formulas more effective in dimming the dark spots. One was the Linoleic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid extracted from safflower seed oil. In its most purified form, it has been clinically proven to have a measurable effect on skin brightening wonder, has no toxicity, is harmless in the body and dissolves completely, leaving no traces in the skin. The other is a microcapsule technology created by Equitance delivering a blend of brightening ingredients. These ingredients plus the linoleic acid over time (products used faithfully twice a day) can help give skin a more even toned and luminous look effective for all skin types(* view clinical study results online). According to Equitance, their 5 topical products produced improvement in the appearance of dark spots in just 2 months of use in 97% of participants (even in various ethnicities).
I tried a few of the products in the line. One is a nutraceutical which I didn’t test –more about that at the end of this review and the priciest product, the Equitance Brightening Serum & Spot Corrector wasn’t included in my samples.
My thoughts on Equitance: There are a number of key products in the (topical) Equitance line including the Brightening Foaming Cleaner ($30.00 4.2 fl. oz.); Brightening Toning Lotion ($50.00 5.0 fl. oz.) , Brightening Cream ($70.00 , Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36 ($30.00, 0.98 fl. oz.) and the Brightening Serum & Spot Corrector ($125.00 1 fl. oz.). You can buy a set of four (minus the sunscreen for $220.00 (regular price $275.00) or buy them separately. These were all attractively packaged in mauve and white plastic containers with silver accents and all were very pleasant to use. Some of the products are scented with a slightly fruitish floral, but not so much it would be distracting.
The foaming cleanser was one of my favorites, as it produced a lot of quick and lavish foam, and a little goes a long way. It was pleasant to use and cleansed thoroughly without drying out the skin. Another standout was the Brightening Cream. Creams in screw top jars are not a favorite way to package skincare as the minute you open a jar of cream is begins to degrade and is exposed to pollutants (air, dust, skin cells, etc.), On the other hand, this Equitance cream is quite thick and probably could not be dispensed any other way. It didn’t absorb quickly, but felt silky and pampering. The star ingredient in the cream is actually licorice (soothing), but it also has Equitance’s Linoleic Acid, Yogurt Extract (nourishes and supports skin brightening), Shea Butter(super moisturizer), Cherry Blossom Leaf Extract (soothes and softens rough skin) and Shell Ginger Extract (intense moisturizing properties to help brighten the skin). My skin is sensitive and this cream initially made my skin blush for a few minutes. My skin was definitely reacting to it, but that didn’t last long and didn’t cause any real concerns.
The standout in my opinion from the Equitance line is the one not even promoted on the Equitance web site… the one product I’d buy no matter what my skincare goals were. it’s the small and slim plastic tube of Equitance Broad Spectrum SPF 36 sunscreen. It’s pricey, but it’s pretty darn fabulous. The actives are 6.5% Octinoxate and 16.88% Zinc Oxide. I shook the bottle up and applied the sunscreen from the thin tip, surprised at how liquid the product was. But it smoothed on so easily and dried so quickly, Lightweight and unsticky, this unscented sunscreen is my new favorite for wearing under makeup on a daily basis. Why it’s SPF 36 I have o idea, but SPF 30 and above is the baseline minimum for daily wear, so it’s fine with me. The slim bottle is perfect to carry in your purse or pocket for travel.
Equitance Nutraceautical — Radiance from Within? The advicesisters.com policy is to not review nutraceuticals – beauty products that must be ingested in your body to work. We just don’t feel comfortable recommending products you put into your bloodstream. The truth is, some of these might be spectacular, but we don’t know your medical condition, the drugs you might be taking, or even if they will interact with something else going on with an individual. We can’t guarantee that they are safe, or even effective. However, Equitance touts their Skin Radiance Dietary Supplement ($100, 30 day supply x2) which the company says “supports radiant skin from within.” A serving size is 6 tablets daily (all at once or throughout the day). There are 20 calories in each and as I peruse some of the ingredients on the outer carton, there is also a proprietary blend of eggshell membrane, grape seed extract, hesperidin, and yucca wood extract (*if you are vegan or are allergic to eggs, obviously this isn’t for you). There is very little written anywhere on the supplements and I’m amazed that there’s nothing on the Equitance website, either. This product might be worth further investigation, but not on advicesisters.com
Equitance, the Bottom Line: As I mentioned in the beginning of this review, skin brightening is challenging and so as a collection, I’m impressed with Equitance. That said, I always caution that no one’s skin is the same, and everyone’s expectations and experience with products like these will differ. We have already commented on the Nutraceutical above. Equitance products are available for purchase on Equitance-us.com where you can also find information about the brand’s approach to beauty, including historical facts from Japanese heritage and culture.
