Longing for a new red or berry Lippy? New products from 9 companies you love #trend, #color, #cosmetics lips for everyone by Alison Blackman, Editor In Chief, advicesisters.com
You found 4 brands with lip pampering products in Part I of this two-part review that help get keep your lips in shade, and to prepare lips ready for bold color.
In Part II I’m suggesting red and berry lip products from 9 fabulous brands at different price levels from companies you know and love. If you embrace bold lips already, you may find some new favorites (my list is carefully curated and not in any particular order). If you haven’t worn bold before, the key is to find products and color tones that work for your complexion. I have selected red and berry colors that are user-friendly (find lots more in the search box upper right hand corner of this page). Tip: high end lipsticks are fun, but if you’re not sure you can carry of a particular shade of red or berry, try something inexpensive first. Some of my personal favorite reds and berries are long lasting formulas that you can find from popular brands (Cover Girl, Maybelline, Revlon) in drugstores. If you like the look, move up to more luxe choices (the advicesisters.com search box upper right hand side of the page will bring up all our reviews).
Which are these are going to make it into your makeup bag? Which ones are your favorites, now?
A lipstick that straddles the fence between pampering and color is the Rodial Glamstick – my favorite in “Revenge.” Call it a cult product, because Rodial is celebrated for it’s skincare products and self-tanners. The new Glamstick Tinted Lip Butters are both hydrating and full of fabulous color. “Revenge” is really more of a hot pink but it’s a great color. I’m suggesting it first on the list for those who might not feel comfortable in intense color but want to dip their toes into the water for bolder color. It also smells slightly of coconut. There are eight other shades, but more importantly, some of the ingredients in this beautifully packaged lip balm include antioxidants, castor seed oil, cocoa butter, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E—plus SPF 15 protection( titanium dioxide). A favorite brand of cosmetics is Clarins. I personally adore their lipsticks and glosses for great color and high performance. You can’t go anywhere near “wrong” with Clarins Joli Rouge Moisturizing, Long Wearing Lipstick $27.00 is a personal favorite. While the color “Jolie Rouge” is a bold red, “Hot Pink” borders the neutral color spectrum between bold pink and bold red, and a nice choice for all skin tones. “Soft Plum” can be blotted into a beautiful berry lip stain, or worn bold and deep. It’s not so “blue” that it will make warm skintones look “goth” — it’s just a gorgeous color that’s trendy now, and flattering to just about everyone. The lipsticks arrive in elegant, shiny gold bullets that look like fine jewelry. Inside the case is the real “jewel,” a luxuriously creamy, moisturizing lip color with intensity in 16 shades that soothe and condition your lips and lasts up to 6 hours bullet designed protect skin from dehydration. These lipsticks also have vitamins C and A, Mango oil and other soothing and moisturizing benefits. The bullet is designed to fit the contours of your lips –apply from the center to the corners. You can’t mess it up! You get what you pay for- remarkable lipsticks deliver hydration , and intense, long wearing color that resists bleeding into those fine lines we all worry about. You can get these newbies st”luxuriously creamy, moisturizing lip color with intensity in 16 shades that soothe and condition your lips and lasts up to 6 hours. Smashbox Ledendary lipsticks ($20.00) offer you the trendiest colors and a matte or hydrating creamy lip that lasts, featuring the intense color you crave. Ther are a lot of lipstick colors to choose from in cream and matte. The matte cream shades are formulated with shea butter for lasting hydration and vitamins C and E so you get bold color, without “dry” lips. Smashbox was born in a photo studio…the company knows how to make products that look good and stay put. I suggest “Mulberry” a creamy berry with a hint of red. I love “Infrared,” a deep, bold matte red that could change your attitude and maybe even the course of your future. Beauty Tip from Smashbox: Change the shape of your lips by subtly rounding out your upper lip around the cupid’s bow with The Nude Lip Pencil for an iconic, heart-shaped pout. Skinn by Dimitri James has a lot of fans, The easiest place to find these really good products is the SKINN Cosmetics web site . The Caviar Lip Cream is great for women who like intense color, moisture, and glossy lips, but also want it to last without having to touch up so often. Formulated with Caviar Extract, it has skin loving benefits. The cell structure of caviar is close to that of human skin cell and the use of caviar in products supposedly helps rev up collagen for the skin at an invigorated speed. There’s not a lot of information I can tell you about the anti-aging benefits – you’ll just have to try it for yourself. The SKINN Caviar Lip Cream is $22.00 (there is Ruby shown here, a warm red, and we also like the bold deep red “Scarlet”).The new Plasma Fusion Full Pigment Lipstick ($20.00) is one of the silkiest and most luxe of the lippies. It’s seriously pampering with an outer layer that has bold pigment with long lasting effect (like a stain) while the inner core pampers! The outer layer is filled Argan Oil and Rosehip Oil that nourish your lips and add a subtle shine. You can layer for more intensity. We like “Rusted Red” for the warm, rich, red color that has a bit of brown in it (rusty reds are so trendy fro Fall 2015)! It’s “the bomb” for a balm (and a lot more).
I’m proud to say that I’m a new Ambassador for the beauty company, Ecco Bella. Their products are natural, and exceptional (The Advice Sisters will be doing a detailed review up soon). The products include some of the most powerful anti-aging ingredients in nature crafted from deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables. When it comes to makeup, and lipstick, natural is nice. I highly recommend the Ecco Bella FlowerColor Lip Gloss ($19.95) is not just good for your lips, it contains naturally-preserved. Gluten and FD & C dye-free and two of the four colors (not shown here, are vegan). The gloss is bold and intense, although the colors seem more user friendly than many other brands. The Ecco Bella FlowerColor Good For You Gloss also has a nice feature: an applicator tube that features a built-in mirror so you can touch up any time without fumbling in your bag for a mirror. Ingredients? simply Castor oil, organic palmfruit stearin, shea butter, candelilla wax, aloe vera, vanilla flavor, complex Vitamin E. *may contain: Titanium dioxide, iron oxide, manganese violet and carmine. The lip glosses are really more than a gloss, less “dry” than lipstick, and they don’t feather or feel heavy. For Fall my top pick is “Passion” a soft but bright enough red to make a statement. You can find your favorites (including a great looking plum/berry) on the Ecco Bella Web Site.
A super-wallet-friendly line I love is Essence Cosmetics. Their makeup is also trendy and user-friendly, with prices that cost way less than a small latte. How can you resist? These products are perfect for experimentation and just because they’re fun. For Fall, there are plenty of choices at just $2.99 (no it’s not a typo). Essence LongLasting Lipstick is a silky lipstick that feels much more luxe than the price. It might not last all day, but it will, for hours * use an Essence Lip Liner ($1.49) to make it last longer and define your lips (e.g. Honey Berry goes well with pinks and plums). As to the lipstick, I like “on the catwalk.” a soft berry that looks flattering on just about everyone. And also “I am Yours!” 8(Check out the latest and greatest of Essence makeup for Fall on advicesisters.com from September 25th –or use our search box to find all our Essence Cosmetics reviews) Visit the Essence Cosmetics Web site to learn more.
Another amazing budget beauty brand I can’t resist is e.l.f. (Eyes, Lips, Face) Cosmetics. They manage to produce trendy, user-friendly products that are high performance, with some of the lowest retail prices around. For example, this ELF Studio Matte Lip Color pencil is just $3.00 and comes in a dozen colors. The lip pencil has a pointed tip that is non-sharpening, so you’ll never have to worry about the pencil giving up on you when you need it the most. But there is still a plastic shaper/sharpener in the base if you need it (or use it on another pencil of the same size and type). The lipstick has good for your skin Vitamin A, C & E to moisturize and hydrate lips. The color is intense, and creamy. All this for so little. I love it! *(Check out the latest and greatest of e.l.f. makeup for Fall on advicesisters.com from September 25th –or use our search box to find all the e.l.f. reviews) Dive into affordable glam and get yours on the e.l.f. web site.
Votre Vu has plenty of nice colors (check out our full review of the newbies that just published September 29th on advicesisters.com or type “Votre Vu” into the search box on the top, right hand side of our page. For Fall 2015 I’m just crushing on the perfect red lip — a soft red French Kiss Lipstick in “Tatiana” by Votre Vu($23.00) . The color is a tomato red, warm and yes it’s red and a bit “rusted” but it stilllooks natural on lips.” Skin bennies are thanks to pure, enriched natural plant waxes and Vitamin E plus a kiss of sun protection SPF 8. There is supposed to be a bit natural vanilla mint (I don’t smell it but others do). If you aren’t totally comfortable with bright bold red, this red gives you the look without going too far. Visit the Votre Vu web site to get yours.
M.A.C. Cosmetic’s brand new M-A-CnificentMe collection actually does focus on nudes, but the limited edition Amplified Creme Lispsticks ($16.50) include these three creamy, intense berries and one bold orange-y red: “Diva Antics” delighted me by looking really dark in the tube, but offering an intense burgundy with a hint of red in it, making it pretty for everyone including those with pale skin. The other colors I didn’t try from this collection in the berry & red shades are “Fashion Revival”, a deep raspberry, My Inner – Femme Intense orangey red, and •Deep Love – Deep brown wine. The collection is available October first through November 22nd Visit the MAC Cosmetics web site to learn more and order or ask at your favorite M.A.C. Cosmetics boutique or makeup counter.
