original fragrance, called “Halston.” This little vial is actually filled with that Halston Perfume. The perfume necklace is very fitting, as Elsa Peretti (who also designs for Tiffany) was once a Halston model! I can’t remember where I acquired that Halston-filled glass flacon, but I never opened it. I can still see its amber colored juice, and
have often longed to smell it, but now it qualifies as a collector’s item.
who designed everything from stewardess uniforms for Braniff Airlines, to
clothing for the glitterati of the 1970’s, started his career working for the
famous milliner, Lilly Dache. But he really became known in his own right after he designed the pillbox hat
Jackie Kennedy wore to the 1961 Presidential inauguration. Halston’s clothing designs graced teh bodies of high profile women such as Bianca Jagger, Lauren Hutton, Liza
Minelli, Anjelica Huston, Elizabeth Taylor, Babe Paley and Lauren Bacall. For
the average woman however, anything by Halston, even his Halston fragrance, symbolized luxury and style.
Enter 2010 and Halston and Halston Man
are re-introduced. Now, in 2011 there’s a new, trendy (but still true to the vibe of the original) fragrance called
“Halston Amber.” by the house of Elizabeth Arden. There is one for women, and one
for men. These are sure to delight those who loved the original, and also a new, younger generation of chic, powerful, and fashionable men and
women. Both fragrances emanate from one Amber accord, but that accord reveals
very different facets in these unique fragrances.
I tried Halston Woman Amber. It’s classified as a “refined
oriental.” It is a blend of precious Ambers,
Woods and Resins. The sent is strong, and spicy, and even has a bit of masculine sensibility to it. But the addition of florals, including a veil of Wild Tuberose, adds the feminine. You can smell the spices and woods, but the
florals stick with you, blending nicely. Like an influential woman, Halston Woman Amber speaks softly, but makes a big impression. The top notes called “luminous femininity” include: Italian Mandarin combined with accents of red currants and Crystalline Aldehydes. The heart features elixir of Pure Amber, Rose
Petals and Wild Tuberose, while the bottom notes add sensuality with Olibanum, Sandalwood, White Suede and feminine Musks.
I didn’t get a chance to smell Halston
Man. But here is what the press literature says about it:
contemporary Woody Oriental creation of ultimate masculinity, extreme
refinement and uncompromising character that provides a luxurious aura of
irresistible seduction.” What that translates into in terms of scent, include top notes of Geranium Leaves and Provence Thyme,
highlighted with Bergamot. A heart of Pure Amber combined with Myrrh and Labdanum, plus a drydown of Oud Wood blended with Cedar Atlas and luxurious Musks. From this description alone, it sounds sexy, and wonderful.
Halston has an understated, elegant, and luxurious vision. To stay true to that vision, and make these new, exciting, fragrances, creator Elizabeth
Arden consulted with Carlos Benaim, Vice President of Perfumery at
International Flavors and Fragrances
(IFF). Notable is that Mr. Mr. Benaim trained with perfumer,
Bernard Chant, who was the creator of the original Halston fragrance. Mr. Benaim also actually collaborated with Halston himself to create the limited
edition fragrance Halston 101. and Benao, also created the newer fragrances:
Halston Man, and Halston Woman
the Halston Amber fragrances are covered in a
reflective, opaque, finish. Halston Woman arrives in a shiny, gold,
hard-sided presentation case worthy of a queen. (Halston Man amber is in a
black carton). Amber Woman is coated in shiny gold, and it sits nestled on a pedestal covered with a
black “velvet.” The bottle fills the palm of your hand, warm and almost alive, like a smooth, precious, river stone that has been warmed in the sun. Halston Man is in a more squat version of the Peretti shape, in a black carton.
