Best Ways to Work a Cute Cami Into Your Wardrobe
By Alison Blackman
Yikes! The light lets you see right through your top, putting your decollete, on display!
Your dress can’t conceal a bra, so it’s showing out the sides, top, back…. (and not in a cute way).
What can you do to add versatility and color to your outfits thats different?
The answer is rock a cute camisole!
Hanro of Switzerland knows a lot about lingerie and loungewear as they’ve been created it for over 130 years.
To learn how to choose and layer a camisole, I consulted with the fashion experts at Hanro.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
The best Camisoles (“camis”) call attention to you in an elegant and subtle way with fabrics that feel luxurious and won’t add bulk.
These are not the type of camisole with logos on them you find in discount stores.
Beautiful camisoles add a special touch to everything you wear, even if a cami is all you are wearing!
What’s so great about a Cami?
Camis are really wardrobe staples but some of them are truly spectacular! Still, a simple one in a bright color can really change the look of what you’re wearing.
For example, a sexy bit of lace peeking out from a blouse or jacket is a date-night staple!
Camisoles are travel friends. They pack flat so you can take a bunch of them to wear them solo, together, or under something else, or even sleep in them.
But the real reason I love them is that they’re the best to deal with tops and dresses where there’s no bra you own that works, and yet you need to wear a bra.
As someone who can’t go anywhere entirely bra-less, there are times when even a strapless or a specialty bra just isn’t going to look right,
When you just don’t want everything to show, pick a cami that matches your skin tone.
Whem the goal is covering up a bra for example, choose a cami in the main color or colors of the garment.
Neutral shades (e.g. beige, ivory, black or white, will work with most of your outfits, but bright camis are accessories to add color.
The Hanro Allure Cami ($89) is a bit of an investment, but it’s a multi-tasker with a built in bra (up to a “C” cup). You can wear this as inner our outwear, with a soft underwire bra and soft adjustable spaghetti straps in 72% Polyamide, 28% Elastane
Choosing a Cami:
There is a virtual cornucopia of camis in the world. For the purposes of this feature I’m focusing on the ones from Hanro, but have fun seeking out ones you love.
For a basic style I like the iconic Hanro Cotton Seamless cami Nicole Kidman wore in “Eyes Wide Shut” that is available in a rainbow of colors.
The 100% mercerized cotton spaghetti cami with hemless bottom has adjustable satin straps and a satin trimmed V-neckline which dips low enough to conceal under a dress or top.
But a longer length makes it versatile enough to wear on its own.
Hanro has so many styles, but I have a favorite!
If your aim is to add a sexy detail or to cover up a plunging decollete, lace detailing is a nice touch.
I asked Hanro to send me a Hanro Luxury Moments Cami to wear test, because I’m always trying to cover up a bit, but not be boring. is the
This cami is just the best and most luxurious all around layering cami I’ve ever tried.
I tried Luxury Moments in white, but it’s also available in several colors and is $61-$88 depending upon the color.
Hanro’s genius is in making 100% Mercerized Cotton fabric so soft it feels like silk. Even their man-made fabrics such as Touch Feeling have that luxurious feel.
But the Luxury Moments camisole is thin breathable cotton with adjustable spaghetti straps just perfect for warmer weather.
The top of Luxury Moments isn’t tight to your body like a shaper would be, but it is somewhat supportive so if you didn’t wear a bra you wouldn’t “bounce” around.
The designer Nieves Lavi gave me this lovely dress, but even with the tie front, it’s quite open. I couldn’t find any bra that would work with it. However, the white Hanro Moments Luxury Cami adds a flirty detail and I can wear a bra underneath it.
Underwear As Outerwear
Some women wear camisoles as their wardrobe staple, without anything else layered over, under or around them all the time….and that’s ok!
I chose spaghetti strap camis for this feature, but there are plenty of other styles with thicker straps, too.
Camisoles are simply versatile tank tops, after all.
When you’re wearing a cami as part of a layered outfit, the tighter piece should be closest to your skin and work outward to loose (e.g. bra or bustier, top or cami, jacket or sweater)
Love Your Versatile Layers!
Camis don’t just make a fashion statement or conceal “boobage,” they are so versatile!
A cami under your blouse (remove the blouse or unbutton it), or just worn under a tailored suit jacket, softens your business look into a dinner look in seconds. y take the “itch” out of sweaters. They add another layer of comfort in cool weather.
Camisoles add protection aginst the “itch” of scratchy material or sweaters.
They can add another layer of comfort in cool weather.
Gop-OH-sis! If your blouse is just a bit too tight and pulls in the front, or there’s a risk that a button might pop open, a cami underneath can save your dignity.
Wear it alone, with sleep or loungewear, under an itchy sweater, or to simply make a fashion statement with an open cardigan, under a dress, blouse, or jacket.
Other Cool Cami Ideas:
wear your cami under a crochet or lace top and with shorts or jeans for a casual date night look.
Layer a lace-trimmed cami under a totally sheer blouse, or wear a cami-style slip under a sheer dress.
Wear a silk cami with pearls to a party with black pants instead of your usual.
Troll the vintage stores– they have tons of slip dresses and vintage slips that can be cut off as camis!
