Several years ago, I attended a trade show called “The Makeup Show” at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan. There were a number of makeup lines exhibiting there that I wasn’t familiar with. One, was LipSense by SeneGence $22.00.
What I remember most about the product was that I bought it — and I rarely buy makeup since I review so much of it. I was impressed with the long-wear of this product, which seemingly would remain on your lips for days, if you didn’t remove it. Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it was one of the first, truly hard-core, lasts-until-you-take-it-off, lip products on the market back then.
Another thing that I distinctly remember about the product was that there were dozens of color choices. The way LipSense works, you simply (carefully) swipe on the LipSense color of your choice from the wanded tube, let dry a few seconds. Apply a second layer (wait a few seconds for it to dry) and then a third. When all of that has been accomplished, swipe on a top coat of the moisturizing Gloss $18.00 (it contains shea butter to help minimize dryness, and to seal in the color with a small amount of sheen). If you do it correctly, the color will last through nearly anything (oily foods do tend to loosen the color–a bit).
The product does work, but you need to know that long wear lip colors do dry out lips, so you need to work with a smooth canvas — in other words, if you apply LipSense to chapped lips, the color will stick to those tiny bits of skin – and the effect is pretty gruesome. So exfoliate, and use balm to keep your lips in good condition if you are going to use LipSense (or any long wear lip product). You also have to be precise with your application. I wouldn’t recommend putting this lip color on in a car or anywhere you can’t really see what you are doing. For once you apply it, it’s there until you take it off or it wears off. If you make a mistake and apply color where you don’t want it, there’s a LipSense Ooops! Remover (for an additional $10.00) that works like a nail polish corrector pen. You (gently) rub it on the lip color you want removed, then tissue it off.
You will also need to take a tube of color, and a tube of gloss with you if you want to re-plenish the color. It will last, but after a while it will start to fade. Since most women carry more than one lip color around with them, this isn’t really an issue, but it could be if you aren’t the type that likes to take more than one product with you “on the go.”
As to the top coat, that is available in glossy, matte or shimmer. However, for something more light reflecting and high shine, there is a Diamond LipSense which I haven’t tried, but it is $25.00. It comes in five colors, and in a “Champagne Ice” neutral gloss that I am assuming can be worn as one of the LipSense layers of color.
Nowadays, there are more choices when it comes to long wearing glosses and lipsticks, but LipSense is still one of those products that if you love it, you won’t be satisfied with anything else. Celebrities like Christina Aguilera loves it, and Joy Behar of The View, wears it on camera. You might also like the fact that the company doesn’t test its’ products on animals, and all of their anti-aging skincare is formulated without animal by-products. All of the formulas are made with FDA-approved ingredients.
Since it can get pricey (LipSense + Lip Gloss + the Ooops! remover), LipSense might not be your choice for everyday wear (or maybe it will be) but it’s really the perfect solution for women who love deep colors (like the bright red “Red Cherry” that I tested) but who find that deep colors tend to “travel” into the tiny lines near their lips. This lip color is so long wear, it should pratically eliminate that issue. The product is also perfect for brides, for travel, and for any of those times when you want to have perfectly made-up lips and you won’t have any chance to renew the color. You can get a set of a color, gloss and anOoops for $45.00, but the chances are you’ll want more than one color. Try layering different ones to make your own, signature color! For truly long wear, LipSense, makes a whole lot of sense.
