We’ve tested this newbie, and we’re besotted! This unique formula offers intense color in what M.A.C. calls a “liquid-suede finish that lingers…For those who prefer timeless glamour to all-out flash, matte reigns supreme. M∙A∙C introduces a twist on this classic texture with robustly saturated shades of Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour. We say the 15 shades of intense, opaque, liquid lipcolor are definitely long lasting (which we love) and they have a very matte finish. The reason for joy is that it doesn’t look dry and it won’t dry your lips out. Wear it all day and it still color lips, and you can “glam” the matte into shine with a lip gloss when you feel like it, without it fading or major league migration into lip line.

The sponge tipped wand is spade shaped so you can use the tip to define as well as keep the color precise. The flat side delivers the color smoothly to the lips. The colors shown below in the press photos are very bright, the actual lipcolors are more subdued, but have an bold color payoff that looks stunning on your lips.

this is a photo I took of the actual Retro Matte Lipcolours I tried: Dance With Me, Fashion Legacy, and To Matte with Love

We didn’t test all of the colors, but we did try three (and we purposely picked very deep colors, although most of them very bright anyway, to see how they wear over time): Fashion Legacy (bold red). Dance With Me (bright red) and To Matte With Love (intense pink/raspberry). The colors on the press photos are brighter and lighter than the colors, in reality. above you can see my actual photo of the shades we tested: Dance With Me, Fashion Legacy, and To Matte With Love.

The applicator is slightly oval/spade shaped so you can apply the creamy formula it precisely, but unlike some of the other longwear liquid products we’ve tried, you still have a short period of time to wipe off excess without staining or blend or blot it down a bit. One it’s set, a little bit might transfer onto a napkin or if you’re making skin to skin contact but not much. As the hours go by, the lipcolor might fade but some color stays put and won’t require much of a touch-up, if any. It’s your perfect go-to every day, but especially if you are a bride, or someone who is going to be kissing a lot (think: Valentines Day) or unable to touch-up frequently.
