A: They can all be used to watch movies via Netflix!
But now, there are even more exciting and easy ways to enjoy a wealth of movies. Depending upon how you use technology, you can still get DVDs by mail, watch them, and return them for other movies. But you can also get movies to stream on your computer, and also newer devices such as your iPad (lucky you if you have one) and your Wii gaming device.
Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Graduations, Weddings and other special events are coming up. Instead of a traditional gift, why not consider giving special people a gift that keeps on giving? For example, why not give them the gift of entertainment?
I have wanted a Wii ever since I saw Kirstie Alley using a Wii Fit on her reality Television Show: Kirsty Alley’s Big Life. It really looked like a lot of fun, and since my trainer left town and I really don’t want to go back to a gym, Wii Fit seems to be the cost effective alternative. But I also saw Wii Sports in action on a huge screen in the atrium of the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Gem about six months ago. Someone was playing “baseball” and I was mesmerized! Of course, once you have a wii, you can add to your library of games an interactive experiences. And, once I learned that I could also stream Netflix movies via the Wii…or will be able to very shortly….I knew that I had to have one. A FREE instant streaming disc for Wii will ship automatically when it is available. With a Netflix unlimited plan starting at $8.99, a broadband Internet connection and a Wii, a you can watch movies instantly. Admittedly, technology as wonderful as the Wii doesn’t come cheap, but for about $199.99 (for the Wii Sports box that I mentioned) it would make a very impressive gift for Mother’s Day OR Father’s Day, or for a new couple, or a new grad, or just about anyone. Add a Neftlix unlimited plan (this starts at just $8.99) and now there is a great new way to watch hundreds of movies, too….a total home entertainment center!
If you really want to show your love, another recent addition to the family of Netflix ready devices is Apple’s iPad tablet. It’s $499.00 but it also offers a free Netflix application that can be downloaded from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore/. I went to an Editor’s preview, and the clarity of movies on the iPad is really impressive. If it makes you feel more generous, Netflix gift subscriptions, which can be printed and presented, or emailed, can be graced with a variety of images, including one especially designed for Mother’s Day. If you are on a budget, you can still impress with a Netflix Subscription. Assuming your special someone(s) has a computer, a DVD player, an Ipad, Xbox 360, a Wii, a Roku $79 MSRP (the Roku digital video player aka the “Netflix Player by Roku“), or other such devices, they can get videos instantly or by mail, as part of a membership of over 12 million people through Netflix. Some people (myself included) are amused just by watching cloud patterns, but with a Netflix subscription, there is never a reason to be bored ever again! There are many different Netflix plans. The luxe plan is the Netflix Unlimited Plan that gives you unlimited DVDs each month with unlimited streaming, and/or 8 DVDs out at-a-time for $47.99. The most inexpensive plan is a limited plan with 1 DVD out at-a-time for $4.99 and a limted of 2 DVDs each month with 2 hours of streaming to a PC.
Until I got a Netflix subscription, I used the video store, or one of the vending machines. But the selection is sorely limited. When I discovered how many movies Netflix has, I was really excited! They not only have new movies that you can see instantly, but a lot of cult movies that you can’t find in most places. How many video stores have “Mothra?” and “Beach Blanket Bingo?” Maybe those aren’t to your liking, but you’ll be able to find just about anything you heart desires on Netflix.
Here’s how NETFLIX works:
DVDs by mail:
1) Sign up and create your Queue (movie list).
2) Netflix sends you movies from your Queue in about 1 business day
3) Watch movies when you want. No due dates, no late fees.
4) Exchange movies in their prepaid envelopes to get new ones from your list.
Streaming via Internet:
Pick from the “watch instantly” section and watch as often as you want, anytime you want. Movies are streamed instantly over the Internet to your PC, Mac or TV via a Netflix ready device. Not all movies are available for instant streaming, but an astounding array, are!
It is really easy to set up an account and lots of fun to search for movies and add them to your queue. You can move your choices around, add to them, or delete them. You can feel even better about gifting someone with a Netflix subscription and/or a cool device such as the Wii or an iPad, or a netbook or even a small TV. It’s so easy to use that even Grandma and Grandpa can use it. And, it’s a “green” choice, too. According to Netflix, if their members drove to and from a rental store, they would consume 800,000 gallons of gasoline and release more than 2.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. And, if you stacked every movie Netflix ships (on average, 2 million DVDs a day) in a single pile, the stack would be taller than Mt. Everest within a week! Now that’s impressive!
From large gifts to small ones, Netflix is really something to consider not just this season, but all year round. Who doesn’t love movies? Make their dreams come true! …there….your gift shopping is all done!!!!
