What’s new for nails? Traditionalists will always love nicely manicured and colored nails (who doesn’t?) The accent nail is still a big trend, too. But when it comes to flaunting your nails in a more eye-catching way, it’s nail art that wins for on trend and fun! The Fall 2015 runway shows ran the gamut in the nail category from sheer to bold, textured to fancy designs. . For Spring Summer 2016 nail art continues to be a strong trend, but less “fussy” and more architectural design than before, This is good news for those who love the look but don’t have a lot of time (or frankly, talent) to use a brush and paint pictures on their nails. For Fall 2015 we have lots of choices, but when the mistletoe is out, think about glitter, jewels, texture and bold colors (advicesisters.com will share some holiday glamour items later in the season). You can purchase nail polish in a huge variety of price points but we’re focusing on the more affordable brands, for right now.
Here’s what’s hot, from some of the companies you know and already love!
The problem is that no matter what brand of polish you use and how carefully you apply it, all that effort can go to waste in a second if you break or chip a nail, of if you suddenly look down and see a bit of polish is missing. This constantly happens to be because I type a gazillion hours a day, putting pressure on my hands and nails. But I’ve recently tried Orly Epic Flexible Color. It looks like any other nail polish, but it has long wearing technology that dries quickly (about 8 minutes), and claims to last over a week. While mine didn’t last quite that long, I’m very hard on my hands and your experience will differ. Another bonus of Orly Epic Flexible Color is that unlike gel, it can be removed like regular nail polish. The “smudge-fixing technology in the formula allows the polish to flex with your nails, which significantly reduces chips and smudges, thanks to polymers that let the finish of the polish bounce back from dents and nicks so it can withstand the punishment we all place on our hands and nails. Another plus is the patented, rubberized, “Gripper Cap” easy to grip top, and the brush applicator is one of the best I have ever tried, allowing you to coat your nails smoothly and easily with just one swipe. You pick one of the Orly Epic Flexible Colors, apply two coats, and then when your nails are dry, a top coat of Flexible Sealcoat. For even longer wear apply another coat of the Flexible Sealcoat every couple of days. Find this fab polish on the Orly Web site and other online beauty sites like beautybrands.com
Morgan Taylor seems to be everywhere backstage at Fashion Week, but everyone can enjoy the colors of the season. Morgan Taylor and Gelish Minis’s ” Fall 2015 Urban Cowgirl” collection is a stunning one, with six colors ranging from a white made modern (a lightly pearly almost white flesh tone called “Tan My Hide” ), to a deep but soft plum “Plum Tuckered Out” that that has a velvety softness to the bold plum. “A Touch of Sass” is a bright dark red (exclusive to Morgan Taylor polish) plus there also “Holy Cow-Girl!” with a fresh look at a sage mint green. My personal favorite, however, is a polish with a lot of pearl and copper in it called “Tex’as Me Later.”It looks like a soft, molten copper and look especially stunning on toes (even if yours are just peeping out of pumps now that there’s a chill in the air.” Gelish minis come in the same shades with one MINI exclusive: From Rodeo to Rodeo Drive which is a taupe-y creme.A Touch of Sass” is a bright dark red (exclusive to Morgan Taylor polish) plus there also “Holy Cow-Girl!” with a fresh look at a sage mint green. Not everyone wants to bother with manicures, or your nail has chipped or broken and you just can’t fix it fast enough. When you’re traveling, there may be no way to get to a salon or DIY a manicure and all you can think about during that big presentation is how to hide your hands? Worry no more. Help is at hand (pun intended) if you have a package of imPRESS Press-on manicure nails by Broadway Nails that give you immediate, if temporary, coverage. But by temporary, I mean these can last for days! In the old days, “stick on” nails didn’t last for long, and they usually looked so obvious it was hard to get away with wearing them. But the new imPRES nails offer an ultra-shine gel that looks realistic, plus they are actually waterproof! I tried some of these nails this Summer and realized that they are a genuine alternative to complicated nail art and/or nail embellishments as well. For Fall 2015 there are six new colors. What makes a legend? Essie Weingarten, the founder of Essie Cosmetics (sold to L’Oreal in 2010.) is certainly one in the nail industry. If you walk into any nail salon,Essie (the polish not the woman) will be there! There’s a fitting reason the Essie Fall 2015 collection called “Leggy Legend” features six really fresh and modern colors that capture the powerful allure of the ingénues of the rock era — they have intensely saturated hues that will rock your fashion look with colors that truly thrilled me. I’ll admit right away that I adore the bright red/orange (2rd from left) called Color Binge. It’s the kind of eye-popping color that I wish I’d had this Summer for pedicures, but it works now as a relief from berries and reds. I wanted to love “Leggy Legend,” but while the color looked very bronze-y in the bottle, it needs a few coats to get to the shimmery delight I long for. In the Lobby is billed as an “Exotic Cinnamon Plum” but it is basically a two-coat plumfest for nails that is almost a royal plum purple (and it’s universally flattering). More red, almost blood red with a lot of burgundy, is “With the Band.” The boldest teal (Essie calls it “Midnight Indigo”) is one of those colors you can’t help but want to try. It’s basically deep blue with a touch of green, and it’s pretty (intense blue colors tend to stain nails and cuticles, so be sure to use a good base coat). Perhaps the most surprising color in this collection is “Frock N’ Roll” that looks like charcoal shimmer in the bottle, but translates to a shimmery coffee deep enough to challenge deep black and blackened greys. Two coats really help it show of and once it does, amazing!!! get the Essie Fall 2015 Leggy Legends collection on the Essie Web Site, and salons nationwide for a reasonable $8.50 per bottle.
One of my personal favorite nail polish lines isn’t a pricey one. In fact, it is one of the least expensive nail polish lines is Sinful Colors ($1.99). For under $2.00 you’d expect boring colors and polish that doesn’t last, but Sinful Colors has huge collections of trendy colors that benefit your nails and that last. Plus they are made in the USA, with the quality you expect from a leading nail brand, and with no damaging formaldehyde, toluene and DBP. ittingly, the 2015 polish collection is called “Runway Ready” featuring 11 colors that range from light to dark, sheer to opaque, glitter and matte. There are 11 colors in this collection: Antique Your Interest sheer, shimmery, golden yellow; Cream Pink: a blue pink with a hint of shimmer, Endless Blue an intense nautical cream blue, Ink Positive a deep royal purple, No Filter (*described as iridescent Twilight Blue — but to my eye it’s very purple); Off the Vine! a marsala wine), Plu Luck, a bright magenta , Purple Haze is lilac, Rose Dust is a shimmery subdued lilac/mauve, Retro Rosie is a sparkly medium pink, and You Goji is a royal rich raspberry. You’ll get the best results if you shake up the bottles first, and apply two coats. ” Get these in mass market retailers and for more information visit the SinfulColors Web Site
Fashion week for Spring 2016 recently ended, but flash back to chilly February, and remember how some of the hottest designers started to really involved themselves with the colors that would ultimately compliment their designs on the runway. Designer Prabal Gurung collaborated with Sally Hansen for the 10th consecutive season to create three exclusive nail polish shades to compliment his Fall 2015 collection, which is a graphic, modern take on effortless glamour. In my photo above, Prabal Gurung’s shades are the three in the middle, bottom row: Midnight Affair (deep blue), Leaf Peeper (medium mauve), and Concrete Jungle (medium soft grey). Designer Tracy Reese has been partnering with Sally Hansen a long time –Fall 2015 was the 19th consecutive season, Her exclusive nail colors are : Yummy Yam (a yellowed beige- (3rd from right top row) , Maasai Red (deep red with a lot of rose in it), and Winter Sky (a light dove grey on the bottom right). Designer Rodarte has collaborated with Sally Hansen for the 5th season in a row. These colors are inspired by translucent color and the subtlety of watercolors. All of these are sheer — a wash of color (get more intensity with a few coats). Gold Glass (is a sheer golden yellow)- right hand side top), Beige Glass ( a sheer soft caramel top row 2nd from left) and Rose Glass ( very pretty kiss of slightly greyed pink – top row left). You don’t have to be a model to get these colors! They’re available now and they are all in the Sally Hansen Complete Manicure formula that is 7-in-one. You get strength, shine, chip resistance, great colors and a built in base and top coat and they’re just $7.99 each. Find Sally Hansen in drugstore and mass market retailers, For more information visit the Sally Hansen Web Site.
- Sally Hansen has also launched an app (available on IOS). called “Mani Match.” I don’t have an Iphone but I did try it on my Ipod Touch. The download was easy and the instructions, simple. Unfortunately, the app couldn’t scan my hands correctly (most likely user error) no matter how many times I tried. But the idea is to scan your fingers and then Sally Hansen’s app picks your perfect shades. Try on any shade you like, “live.” Download it on your iPhone and give it a try!
