I’ve Gone Nuts for Nudestix Multi-Tasking Pencils!
by Alison Blackman
Just a few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the CEW Beauty Product Awards preview and NudeStix was exhibiting some of their multi-tasking makeup pencils. I immediately become obsessed, first with the packaging (chic, matte, black tins with interior mirrors) and then of course, with the multi-tasking products. You might not tote the tin everywhere, but it’s great for travel. With or without the tin, you can take these multi-tasking Nudestix pencils with you just about anywhere. The soft, silky pencils are full of good-for-your-skin vitamins, antioxidants, and moisturizers and they don’t have any Parabens , Sulfates or Phthalates. According to my sources, they also are free of volatile cyclomethicones, gluten, preservatives, and animal-derived ingredients.
Nudestix was created by Jenny Frankel, a chemical engineer previously at MAC and Cover FX, and her daughters, Ally and Taylor, who are the young faces of the brand (that’s the girls in the photo, above). The brand’s motto shows the fun side of these products: #GoNudeButBetter. But on a serious note, the products are really good. Recently the launched a new pencil: Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil ($24.00) along with a collaboration with the “Love is Louder,” movement (see video at the bottom of this feature). Love is Louder is a project of The Jed Foundation created with actress Brittany Snow to support anyone feeling mistreated, misunderstood or alone. $5.00 from the sale of the “Love” and “Kiss” Nudestix Lip Pencils goes to support Love is Louder (check out my photos of these fab pencils below as well).
The name implies that all the colors are “nude” but that’s not really true. The newest product, the 3-in-1 matte Lip Liner, Lip Stick and Cream Blush ($24.00) there are 8 shades: 5 nude (ish) shades and 3 deeper tones (including a sensational red called “Stiletto” and two deep berries “Royal” and “Raven.” Note that the pencils are waterproof, last a long time without smudging, and (wonder of wonders) don’t migrate into those tiny lines where you really don’t want them to go. Another thing to note is that these pencils arrive with a traditional cap and also a really cool looking cap sharpener (replace the original cap with the sharpener and it becomes the cap (clever)!
I tried “Belle,” a soft nude mauve-ish pink with enough color so lips get that trendy nude look without looking boringly bland and “Kiss,” a slightly deeper rose-y pink that is one of the pencils that donates $5.00 of your purchase to Love is Louder (see the explanation first paragraph). Nude is a matter of feeling, and everyone needs a “teench” of color on their lips so while all of these nude in a way, none have that fleshy, “eggy” nude look that really doesn’t even flatter young runway models.
There are a whole bunch of different Nudestix products for Eyes, Face and Lips, but I’m really excited about the new 3-in-1 Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil s. Matte lipsticks can often look dry and cake-y, but these feel moist and silky, and make lips look moistly matte. They also don’t dry out your lips like a lot of matte lip products tend to do. FYI: to make the matte formula perform even better, there is one more Nudstix pencil that I think it really a must have is the Nudestix BLUR Skin Pencil ($24.00) which, if you apply it as a primer before applying the Nudestix Intense Matte lip + cheek pencil, it will act like a primer to help extend the wear of the color and keep it true. It also blurs lines, creases and pores, elsewhere. Dehydrated hyaluronic acid spheres penetrate and swell up with moisture in the skin, quickly filling creases and providing long-lasting hydration while Vitamin C & E soothe skin. The Blur Pencil is also paraben free with no animal testing.
I also tried the Lip + Cheek Nudestix Pencil ($24.00) in “Love” a soft light pink that I thought would be too light for my lips, but turned out to lend a soft peachy-pink tint to my lips, and a very flattering flush to my cheeks. This one isn’t matte, but it’s not shiny, just kind of moistly pretty, When you are traveling or if you’re carrying a small purse, a multi-tasking pencil like this is really a space and time saver.
