The sun is a wonderful thing, but it can also harm you with dangerous UVA and UVB rays that you can’t see. You don’t need a sunburn to damage your skin. Your body absorbs the sun’s dangerous rays even on a cloudy day or through a window. Sunblocks, hats and clothing with UPF (the rating for sun protection on fabric) can help. But you’ll need to use decent products to protect yourself, with a decent amount of SPF.
Scary? For sure! But there are plenty of options to protect your skin. For those who want upscale quality, one of The Advice Sisters’ favorite brands is Algenist. If you have some disposable income and you’re looking for pleasant, effective, multi-tasking sun protection, you can’t do much better than Algenist. This company bills itself as”biotechnology from San Francisco” and the products are formulated with alguronic acid, an algae extract claimed to have major anti-aging benefits for the skin that are similar to those provided to microalgae cells. These cells have the ability to protect and regenerate themselves, even in in harsh environmental conditions. The idea is that alguronic acid can also provide those same benefits to the skin, including increasing skin smoothness, decreasing fine lines, and minimizing wrinkles *with proper and regular use, of course.
Algenist is for anyone who is worried about aging, or whose skin is already showing signs of aging. Even better, Algenist is good for skin types; Dermatologist tested, Non-comedogenic; Hypoallergenic, and not tested on animals. All Algenist products are also made without any: Parabens; Sulfates; Synthetic dyes; Phthalates; GMOs or Triclosan. I like that the ingredients in these products are listed and available on the Algenist web site. ($90.00
For SPF protection on a daily basis, try the multi-tasking Regenerative Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 20 ($90.00 2 fl. oz.).
Upside? This killer cream is easy absorbed, and you’ll feel good that you are getting a cocktail of skin loving benefits along with your SPF 20. The slight chemical smell evaporateds quickly, and I love the hefty, attractive frosted glass jar (make sure you don’t drop it)! This luxe cream gives you the benefits of anti-aging ingredients, combined with enough SPF to make it good for daily use. It nourishes and moisturizes skin, while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Key ingredients are Alguronic Acid combined with vitamin C and apple stem cell extract, that help diminish signs of aging and protect against UVA and UVB exposure. It’s a good choice for anyone who wants good anti-aging skincare and won’t add a sunblock on top of it.
Downside? Not much, other than the packaging of a screw top jar. Open it, and oxygen, contaminants from the air, and from your fingers, immediately begin to degrade the product. And this product doesn’t even come with an applicator, so you’ll have to supply your own. That said, rich creams like this are often hard to dispense from cleaner packaging like pumps. Just know that once you open the jar, the freshness clock starts ticking.
Beauty Editors at an Algenist skincare event a while back were crushing on the Algensit Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid ($38.00 1 fl. oz.). The bottle is shockingly little but the product is also astoundingly nice to use. Upside? It’s a fabulous, everyday sunblock well worth every penny. The sunscreen is liquid and has a shaker bead in it to mix it up. It’s oil-free, and will offer you daily protection against broad spectrum UVA and UVB damage. The key ingredients include Alguronic Acid combined with antioxidant-rich botanicals and UVA/UVB actives of 7.5% Octinoxate,2.0% Titanium Dioxide, and 17.1% Zinc Oxide.
Upside? This product is really not like any other sunblock you’ve tried. It isn’t sticky or goopy and it won’t make you break out. It is, if you can call a sunscreen this: “elegant.” It’s sheer and blends out so a little will cover a lot, but it also has a bit of a chemical smell, not bad, and it dissipates quickly. You can use this on top of other skincare products and under makeup for a smooth, matte finish. Don’t forget to shake the bottle well and apply it liberally at least 15 minute prior to sun exposure.
Downside? Again, not much. You’ll still have to re-apply it every 2 hours or so and this one isn’t water resistant, so if you’re swimming or doing active sports, choose something more appropriate to those activities. Also, be prepared to share with loved ones even those who don’t like sunscreen. They’re all going to get hooked. Algenist needs to make a (discounted) family size!
