Physicians Formula is one of those brands that amazes and mystifies me. They amaze me because they have beautifully presented, clever products that multi-task and perform perfectly, and they mystify me because they do these so inexpensively. For Spring 2015 , Physicians Formula is offering so many new products, I split my review into two parts. This part is all about products for the FACE. The second part is a focus on products for the EYES.
You are going to want to clean off an entire shelf, or empty a drawer, because you are going to want them all. Spoiler alert: Yes, I am going to gush!
PRODUCTS FOR THE FACE NEW FOR SPRING 2015 FROM PHYSICIANS FORMULA
ARGAN OIL MULTI-TASKERS:
I am going to start with the products that Physician Formula is offering with 100% pure Argan Oil (for the first time at mass market, FYI). All of these Argan Oil products are not only made with 100% pure argan oil, they are Hypoallergenic, Fragrance-Free, Paraben-Free, Gluten Free, Dermatologist Approved, and Non-Comedogenic.
While Argan Oil is highly prized for it’s moisturizing properties, it can sometimes be overly emollient (read: “greasy”). The Physician Formula Argan Wear Ultra Nourishing Argan Oil both regular and illuminating comes in a glass jar with a dropper top, billed as a “multi-tasking miracle moisturizer, primer, brightener, protector, and treatment.” I thought it would be greasy and make me break out. Not so! the product absorbed almost immediately, leaving my skin so much softer than before, it was astounding. The illuminating version left a bit of gold sparkle which was nice on my neck and decollete. This Argan Oil feel so pampering, you will want to use it all day long! So impressive, I recommend both types. The Argan Wear Ultra-Nourishing Argan oil BB Cream has all the properties of the oil in the dropper, but it’s a cream, with a light tint, and it comes in a petty tube and has SPF 30 (actives: 5.76% Titanium Dioxide; 2.96% Zinc Oxide) to seriously protect your skin. You can wear it as a primer or a light tinted moisturizer, but it is enough to blur flaws and imperfections with light-reflecting pigments so you might not even want to wear foundation (I wore mine with the Argan Oil Bronzer and the City Glow over it instead of formal foundation). There’a a Light and Light/Medium, and both are sheer even to “finesse” the color unless your skin is fairly deep (or use it as a primer and get the skin-loving benefits under your foundation).
To compliment the BB cream, there is a blush and a bronzer also with 100% pure argan oil infused into them. First, you have to appreciate the beautiful Moroccan-inspired design embossed into the powder, embellished with gold accents. They are so pretty to look at in the gold compacts with clear tops, you might feel guilty messing them up with a brush or puff to apply the products. If you read my reviews regularly you know I’m not much of a fan of most bronzers, but the Physicians Formula bronzers are so excellent, I have not only become a fan, I’ve become a regular user of them. This particular bronzer comes in Bronzer (medium deep) and Light Bronzer (my choice) which just gives you a bit of a glow, not a “tan.” Somehow, it just adds enough “life” to Winter weary skin to make it look fresh and glowing, without the obvious “fake bake” look. There’s an applicator brush and a mirror in the bottom of the compact, and both are nice. The compact looks and feels elegant, but it’s just under $15.00. I’d call that, a miracle. The blush is also beautiful and infused with argan oil. It is available in two colors: Natural (blush pink) and Rose (with a touch of gold sparkle). Both blushes are sheer and layer-able, and have a decent applicator brush and a mirror, kn the bottom of the golden compact.
BB AND CC CREAMS:
BB and CC creams can do a lot for your skin, They’re multi-tasking products that let you moisturize, perfect, conceal, smooth, brighten, firm, reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, and some are even long wearing. All of the Physicians Formula BB and CC products are also Hypoallergenic, Fragrance-Free, Paraben-Free, Gluten Free, Dermatologist Approved, and Non-Comedogenic.
The Super BB All -in-One-Beauty Balm Stick SPF 30 might be my new favorite product not just because it has SPF 30 (actives: 5.76% Titanium Dioxide; 2.96% Zinc Oxide) but because it does all of the things listed above and is in a stick–the most travel-friendly form. It also comes in Light and Light/Medium to suit most skin tones. Use it as a spot concealer, or all over your face. It has Vitamins C&E, White Willow Bark Exctract, Encapsulated Glycerin & Perilla Ocymoides Fruit Extract (moisturizing properties that help improve the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles and help firm), and Luxsil powder (which also blurs, conceals, and helps create a smooth even finish. That’s a whole lot for a chunky, .24 oz. swivel up stick!
The first is in a compact: the Super BB All-In-! Beauty Balm Bronzer & Blush Duo SPF 30. It has all the benefits of the Super BB but one side holds a powder bronzer in Light or Light/Medium (the medium is fairly deep) and the other side has a pink blush. The bottom of the white compact has a unique heart-shaped applicator (one side for each color) and a mirror). I love the option to carry both a blush and a bronzer with you, plus the beauty benefits of the BB ingredients!
The second is in a round ball with a screw-off top: The Super BB all-In-1 Beauty Balm Cheek & Lip SPF 20 which you can get in Natural Peach or Berry Pink. I tried the Peach. The tints are very sheer, but they add a hint of natural glow to cheeks and lips with one fun product that is user-friendly, and portable. The actives are 7.5% Octinoxate and 3.26% Zinc Oxide. It’s really just a fabulous balm, and a beauty boon that is well worth $6.95 for all that it does. Get both colors!
For those who simply wont’ use anything that isn’t organic, there is an option for you as well from Physicians Formula, it’s the Organic Wear BB 100% Natural Origin All-in-1 Beauty Balm Cream SPF 20 (actives: 3.9% Titanium Dioxide, 1% zinc oxide). It’s a fine BB cream with the benefits of a BB cream but it has natural and organic ingredients (Leuconostoc / Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Leuconostoc Ferment Filtrate, Fragrance/Parfum, May Contain / Peut Contenir: Iron Oxides). It doesn’t have any harsh chemicals or GMOs and no synthetic presevatives, colors or fragrances or parabens. It is also safe for all skin types. it is also available in Light and Light/Medium, but if you’re not someone who feels that you want 100% natural origin and 70% organic ingredients, the SPF 30 of the regular BB cream still gets my vote to pack a bit more BB “power.” For those who want organic, this one is amazingly good.
There are also two CC Creams (Color-Correction+Care) . CC creams are like BB creams but they provide color correction along with treatment. In effect, the are makeup with treatment benefits. The Physicians Formula new Super CC Cream SPF 30 in a compact is travel-friendly, and comes in Light and Light/Medium. The Actives are 3.53% Titanium Dioxide and 4.54% Zinc Oxide. The CC cream 1st Ever CC Compact Cream has color-correcting pigments that instantly help correct uneven skin tone, imperfections, discoloration and the visible signs of aging. Yellow corrects blue imperfections and warms skin tone. Green tones down redness. Pink brightens and illuminates. And there are anti-aging brighteners that add radiance and smooth the skin. To apply this product, a sponge applicator rests in the bottom of the compact, along with a mirror. Like many of these products, used properly, it can really help to deal with age spots, dark circles, blemishes, dullness, uneven skin tone, discoloration, and other signs of aging. Use it instead of treatment/moisturizer/foundation/SPF protection which is especially great when you’re traveling. It’s fairly opaque and although there is a sponge with this product I still prefer using a foundation brush (see my article on what makes a great makeup brushes and how to use them). Along with this fabulous Super CC cream is a Super CC Color Correcting Instant Blurring CC Eye Cream SPF 30 which you can get only in Light/Medium. The actives are 5.40% Titanium Dioxide and 2.96% Zinc Oxide. It is the 1st Ever Blurring CC Eye Cream that blurs wrinkles, fine lines, dark circles, crow’s feet, puffiness, imperfections, crepey lids, sagging, uneven texture and signs of fatigue. use this product as an eye cream, primer, concealer and eye shadow base. The product is a good one that does improve the look of tired eyes and more than that, it has a “cooling tip” made of stainless steel that helps massage the eye area which stimulates circulation. You just can’t beat the price, either.
NUDE WEAR COLLECTION:
Nude Wear products deliver pretty much what their name suggests: lightweight coverage with perfecting nude pigments and make your skin look much better than “bare ever could. That’s not to say that these products are completely sheer. They feel lightweight on your skin and they are lightweight in coverage, but there’s enough coverage (in Light or Light/Medium) so that if you just want a natural but nice finish to your face, you’ll get it. All of the products are packaged with rose gold accents, a rose gold “bow” and blush peach “leatherette” wrapping on the tubes and compact that look expensive (I don’t know how physicians formula does it for the price, I really don’t! ) I have been truly, personally enjoying the Nude Wear Touch of Glow Foundation, which really blurs imperfections and evens out skin tone. one drop from the pump bottle covers your entire face, and it comes with a foundation brush so you can really make the product work for you. Your skin doesn’t look completely “opaque and made up” but it will make a three minute makeup look marvelous! Add the (swivel up) Nude wear Touch of Glow Stick as a spot Concealer and touch-up and for on-the-go. There is also a Touch of Glow with a brush tip, also good for touch-ups in a hurry.
I am not a fan of too much “glow” (read: shimmery face products) because it’s difficult to know how much to apply. Too little, and you don’t get much effect. Too much? You look clown-ish. The Nude Wear Touch of Glow Palette (in Light or Light/Medium) has a highlighter, blush powder and bronzer all in one. Micro-fine mother of pearl pigments give you transparent shimmer, so you can’t overdo it. There is an angled brush and mirror in the bottom, too. The “Light” I tried featured a pink blush, gold powder, medium bronzer and a champagne highlighter. In this line there’s also a bronzer, blush and powder all in Light or Light/Medium. I didn’t try them, but the colors appear to be in the pink and peach range, none too extreme, so everyone can really wear all of them.
Perhaps my most favorite product of all, is the new City Glow. It’s a bronzer of sorts, but the eye-catching cityscapes of New York and Paris immediately caught every editor’s eye. Furthermore, they immediately began to pick up a lot of “likes” when I put them on social media (maybe more than just about any photo I ever posted). There is so much to like in this very special bronzer that I have been personally wearing it just about every day when I want to add a bit more color to my face (this Winter, I really look pale, and this bronzer make even bare skin look naturally just a bit more lively). The Multi tasking bronzer mimics the natural glow from the sun (yes, finally, I found a bronzer that really does!) and provides Anti-Aging, Anti-Dullness, Anti-Grey, Anti-Stress, and Anti-Pollution protection (for us “urban girls” who can’t avoid it). It also has SPF 30 with an active of a whopping 15% Titanium Dioxide. I can’t believe I found a bronzer I am in love, but this is it! The bronzer isn’t very dark (Paris is a bit more toasty) but if you are “fake bake” averse (as I used to be until this product arrived) don’t use the brush in the bottom of the compact, use a BIG fluffy makeup brush and dust on just a bit. (see my article on what makes a great makeup brushes and how to use them). The results are spectacular!
For those who are not bronze-averse and really like that more “tan” look, there is the Bronze Booster bronzer. The compacts are raly kind of stunning, a gold-glitzed and shiny gold that make you want to take them out and show off. The bronzers are not just faux tan, there is also a shimmery highlighter (in the form of a beautiful sun) that has 24 Karat gold in it. The big kick to this bronzer is that it supposedly lasts, up to 24 hours because it has Physicians Formulas “Glow Activator Technology” that not only give that instant glow, it has a custom infusion of vitamins, moisturizers and antioxidants that help extend the life of the color. I can tell you that it didn’t smear on my clothes (and I have an ivory ski jacket I’ve been wearing). The point is, these bronzers are really long lasting and they won’t streak or turn orange. The compacts also have a mirror and brush, but I really recommend a big brush to apply bronzer more “believably.” (see my article on what makes a great makeup brushes and how to use them). While my personal preference is for the City Glow just for the SPF 30 and the more subtle tint, bronze-a-holics will adore this one.
