Spending time in the sun, is fun, but the sun’s rays can not only damage your skin, it can damage your hair, too. It only make sense to use products that protect the top of your head, as well as products that protect the rest of you. When it comes to hair, Redken makes lots of great products, including a trio of treats in their Color Extend Sun collection that help busy people do the most for their hair in the least amount of time. Color Extend protects protects both highlights and color, with an exclusive Interbond Conditioning System and advanced Hydra-Shield complex, exclusive to Redken. The products feature “Soplexyl, ” a patented sun filter that actually sticks to your hair to give it the type of UVA/UVB protection you get from serious sunscreens. The products also have Benzophenone-4, that, along with Soplexyl, provide real protection against the sun’s damaging rays. Other good for your skin ingredients include mango oil, to help restore moisture and ceramide, to repair and resurface each strand.
The Color Extend Shampoo $13.00 10.1 fl. oz. is exceptional. There’s also an After Sun Mask $5.00 8.5 oz. that takes the place of a conditioner, and a Color Extend Sun Sparkling Shield $16.00 5 oz. The shampoo has a nice, light scent, and good lather that rinses out clean. It effectively but gently refreshes hair and removes dirt, sweat, oil and even mineral chlorine and salt. You’ll get great cleansing power, but the product won’t strip your hair or make it feel dry.
The After Sun Mask is a deep conditioning treatment that is the conditioner in this line. I generally don’t like to use masks too often because they are often overly emollient, but this gel/cream washed out easily, leaving my hair feeling super soft down to the hard to condition, dry ends. When I ended up sitting for an hour in an outdoor cafe and I didn’t have a hat or scarf with me, I still felt that at least my hair and it’s color, was being protected.
The Sparkling Shield looks so pretty in it’s clear, amber bottle. You can actually see the glittery shimmer inside. It leaves a high wattage shine that is pretty, of course, but it’s real purpose is to protect your hair from the sun’s UVA/UVB rays. It’s a true beach must-have because it also prevents hair from absorbing color-sabotaging chlorine and minerals. The product isn’t overly emollient in terms of the grease factor, but it does add a coating that makes you hair feel super-soft. If you are wearing a beachy braid, bun, or ponytail where a slicked back look is desirable, this product is a perfect, outdoors-y partner.
All these products are high performance and within the realm of reason for tight budgets. The Sparkling Shield, for example, could last all Summer, since you really don’t need much.
