“A touch of color is all it takes to change your appearance.” Christian Dior famous said. But what does
a touch” really mean? The Advice Sisters think lips should be a signature and for many women, that means red (the bolder, the better). Who wears red? Just about everyone! Find the tone that flatters your own skin tone or is neutral enough to flatter both warm and cool, and you will be hooked, for life! Red-lip lovers range from sirens and temptresses (e.g. Dita Von Teese) to elegant and classic women like “ Gwyeth Paltrow (credited as saying: “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.”).
Beauty magazines in 2014 proclaimed orange as the new red, and they have habitually pushed nudes as the one to wear to be “modern,” but neither of those really looks great on the majority of women. Even the late, great Frank Zappa has been quoted as saying ” Nobody looks good with brown lipstick on.” That might be a bit unfair, but red is a classic color that never goes out of style. The reason? It is transformative. Red lips make you feel elegant, powerful, bold, edgy, or perhaps, even trashy, depending upon your mood, and how and what red lipstick you wear. You can’t help but love it!
Today on advicesisters.com we celebrate some of the best of the best kick-ass red lipsticks for the season that are luxurious, worth the investment, make fabulous gifts, and are sure to make you stand out –in great ways during the holiday season, New Years Eve, and way beyond for a fabulous 2015!
NARS Burning Love Lip Gloss ($26.00) This Limited Edition lip gloss from NARS from the Holiday 2014 collection offers a creamy, semi-sheer formula that, as reds go, is more subdued than many. It has subtle shimmer and lots of shine, but the red has a hint of raspberry so it’s not “in-your-face” blood or cherry. The formula is opaque enough to wear as a lip color in it’s own, almost like a semi-sheer stain, but Vitamin E adds beauty benefits, too.
Also from the Holiday 2014 Collection is a limited edition Hardwired Lipstick ($26.00) from NARS called “Deadly Catch.” this lipstick might be the pefect red for those who want truly bold lips without the “trampy” factor. The creamy bold crimson is done in a new formulation. This Hardwired Lipstick fuses cutting-edge pigments with a high-impact, futuristic sheen. Like the gloss, the look is really red, but somehow, a bit subdued, so your lips look red,not bloody. It’s a beautiful thing!
The iconic NARS cases are also dressed up s well – either or both make a great holiday gift idea for anyone who appreciates the best of the best when it comes to makeup. These limited edition beauties are exclusively available on NARScosmetics.com
I personally love long wearing lipsticks. Red tends to “travel,” and fade. if you don’t have time to touch up your lips very often but you want that stunning red to still look perfect, a long wear lipstick is the perfect choice. While some of these lipsticks can look dry (and dry out your lips), there is one specific DIOR lipstick that I have personally wear-tested that keeps lips looking and feeling soft, while lasting for literally hours.
That kick-ass red is Diorific Haute Couture Long Wearing Lipstick “#021 Icone” ($38.00) . The rich, warm red slides on like silk with a moistly-matte finish (it is matte, but still luminous, not chalky) and it lasted in my wear test for the entire day, even through coffee and lunch before needing any kind of touch up. the angled tip makes it easy to line and fill, precisely. The bold, shiny, gold case with globes at top and bottom are a little jewel of it’s own- a show-stopper if and when you decide you really do want to re-apply. *if you really want, you can wear a gloss over these matte lipsticks for a shiny look but they really do look more elegant “as-is.”
For a more edgy, party look you can’t do better than the Diorific Golden Shock Colour Lip Duo-Matte and Metallic “007 Passion Shock”($38.00). The same beautiful lipstick case holds a Diorific lipstick that is really two lipsticks in one with a matte side and a metallic side. A lovely, creamy, neutral red in a medium tone paired with the same tone with pearly gold shimmer means you can wear the matte look, “partify” the look with more metallic and shimmer by layering the two, or just wear the more shimmery side for party time. If you are traveling, it might be the one lipstick you take with you if that makeup bag is limited in size!
Did classic film starts like Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor wore either of these specific shades of Rouge Dior Couture Colour Voluptuous Care ($35.00)? This specific formula probably didn’t’ exist when these two were mega-stars, because Dior improves the formulas and ingredients for beauty, wear-ability and to protect and nurture your lips as technology allows. but I would be willing to guess that these women and their makeup artists loved Dior reds. Rouge Dior is available in lots and lots and lots of luminous shades, but I’ve picked just two that flatter — #&52 Rouge Favori is a classic cool blue red to flatter cool skin tones” and “#941 Rouge Cannage” is a clear, bright red just bordering on warm that will look good on nearly everyone. What’s so wonderful about these amazing lipsticks is the feel of them. When you apply a lipstick you expect some slip so it goes on smoothly, but Rouge Dior Couture Colour Voluptuous Care startled me with the ease of application, as if it almost wanted to apply itself in one effotless, velvety swipe. The Rouge Dior voluptuous care formula has marine crista in it to smooth and reshape lips. It’s shockingly transformative..in a very beautiful way. The midnight navy blue cases with silver collars featuring the iconic Cannage design show everyone you have great taste. Every woman should invest in one of these lipsticks for her color wardrobe. Everyone knows that I’m a huge fan of the real red lipstick queen, Poppy King. In fact, Lipstick Queen Red Sinner and Red Saint were the first red lipsticks I ever wore out in public without feeling like a total freak. And now, for Holiday 2014 while Lipstick Queen has grown from a small collection of kick-ass reds (and pinks and nudes) to a much larger collection, and there are a variety of holiday gift sets this year, there are two that really do embrace the spirit of those original red lipsticks that made Poppy King the undisputed Queen of the red lip. For starters, there is the fabulous Lipstick Queen Red Carpet Edit $55.00 featuring the original Red lipsticks, Red Saint and Red Sinner, Plus Red Metal, a shimmery version, These are presented in a beautiful, flocked red velvet gift box. For the classic red, the creamy matte Red Sinner is your pick. But if you want something a bit more subtle and sheer but still rockin red Red Saint is your daytime choice. For an edgier red look, try the metallic Red Shimmer which (for me at least) would be more of a party look, especially if you slick a shiny clear gloss over it. All of these lipsticks are long lasting and creamy, with nourishing Vitamin E to hydrate your lips. The red tone is neutral, not too blue or yellow, so everyone can feel great in them. Poppy King knows how to create a lipstick. This is a red lipstick wardrobe for daytime, night-time, and party-time in a box! All enriched with nourishing natural oils and protective anti-oxidant Vitamin E, this hydrating trio will leaves lips soft, supple and deliciously moisturized.
For those who prefer liquid lipsticks, the Lipstick Queen Liquid Assets $38.00 gift set gives you gloss and opaque, super-shiny color all in one brush-tipped pen. I love these because you have control over where the color is deposited. The pen with brush tip is like using a lip brush in one. In this trio the only true red is the lip pen called “Vesuvian Red.” It’s a bright scarlet red that looks like a stain if you blot it, a patent-leather liquid lip luster if you don’t. The other two pens in the set are a girly natural peach called “Blush” and a bright hot pink called “fuchsia” neither of which are red, but are layer-able with the Red to make it whatever tone you want (warmer or cooler) or just wear them as-is, of course! These lip pens are glossy but they’re not wimpy. The color lasts, and even better, they are not sticky, and they have good for your lips Jojoba and Vitamin . They are truly luxurious, and yet, affordable. This might be the set you get (for yourself).
These Lipstick Queen holiday sets are available at Barneys New York, Space NK stores, and for more information visit the Lipstick Queen Website
Milky Lips (for those who do not like the feel of a lipstick – it is a lighter texture) and Glazed Lips (a non-sticky gloss, with a higher pigment load than regular glosses). I received creamy, milky and hot lips formulas to try, and I am offering actual swatches of my samples in a photo plus those from Ellis Faas’s web site. Ellis Faas Creamy Lips L101 “Blood Red” which seems forbiddingly dark and almost “bloody,” still managed to be attracted on my ruddy, freckled and fair skin. These are sophisticated formulas in beautiful packaging with long lasting colors and classic to edgy reds that impress Gorgeous, grown-up formulas that really impress and look amazing. Once you try one you likely will be back for more (and more colors, and products, too). Select the products you love and you may never want to use anything else. Many many many seasons ago, when Fashion Week was still a more subdued event backstage, I had the pleasure and honor of watching the best makeup artists in the world apply products to the faces of some of the most sought after models in the world. And one of my favorite makeup artists to watch, was Charlotte Tilbury. She was so focused on her work, but she was also gracious when I asked questions. Now, the celebrated Charlotte Tilbury has her own line of makeup that launched very recently. I’ve been itching to get my hands on some of it, and I’ll be including more in a New Years Eve feature in a few days. But Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G SO MARILYN Fallen From The Lipstick Tree Lipstick ($32.00) is the essence of a kick-ass luxury red. *there are 10 shades in this line, if you love the formula and want more colors. *with long lasting lipsticks like these you don’t need a lip liner but to keep the line precise, a Lip Liner is always helpful, such as the Charlotte Tilbury Lip CheatKiss N’Tell Re-Shape & Re-Size Lip Liner ($22.00)
The paraben-free lipstick has a “lipstick tree” ingredient–an anti-oxidant that naturally protects lips from UV damage and external pollution while keeping lips soft. The formula slips on like a silk chemise. The red is deep but neutral, not gaudy, but bold and classic. Charlotte suggests using it straight from the very elegant gold tube for daytime, and for night, slicking on the coordinating Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre Lip Lacquer in Red Vixen ($22.00)— what she calls her “ultimate red carpet trick.” What makes this gloss really special is that it doesn’t bleed easily and will last for hours, even though it provides that high wattage shine that makes lips so incredibly sexy. The creamy, 3D look is really exciting and luxurious but it’s not sticky or tacky feeling, as the vinyl texture is enriched with Lotus Flower extract, an anti-oxidant that protects, hydrates and soothes lips. Who could ask for more. Frankly, it’s a bargain! For more information visit the Charlotte Tilbury Web Site
