…Din! Din! Din! 80
You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!
Tho’ I’ve belted you an’ flayed you,
By the livin’ Gawd that made you,
You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!..
A Review of the Best Water Bottles To Give and Receive
by Advicesisters Staff
When whenever we thik of water bottles, we think of Gunga Din, the famous 1892 poem by Rudyard Kipling.
It’s a long, bittersweet tale of an English Solider who has abused an Indian water-bearer (a bhishti) named Gunga Din. The water bearer saves the soldier’s life and then is quickly killed. But at the end of the long poem, the soldier admits he has been horrible to Gunga Din who he says is definitely “the better man.”
If you haven’t read this classic poem, Google it and read it!
Water Bottles Are Our “Gunga Din”
We are no longer living in 1892, fighting the enemy on the battlefield in the army in British India, but water is still an essential part of survival.
We don’t have to count on another person to carry out water, we have water bottles to protect us from dehydration. We can take them everywhere, even if we are in the most remote and inhospitable places.
You probably own at least one water bottle, and probably a couple. But while they come in all shapes and sizes, they’re not all created equal.
Advicesisters.com has selected a few water bottles that we think are better and more unique than most. These water bottles are not only affordable, they serve specific needs well.

Takeya’s ThermoFlaskWwater Bottles
Have you ever been in this situation? It’s so hot outside that when you get into your car for a sip of cool water, it’s been (naturally) heated almost to “tea brewing” temperature? Are you a “road warrior” or adventurer who likes cool and hot drinks that really stay hot or cold “on the road?”
The best gift for anyone who wants their liquids to remain at the temperature they were at when they entered the water bottle, is one of Takeya’s ThermoFlask water bottles. keep your drinks cold for 24 hours, and hot for 12 hours. The ThermoFlask is BPA-free and thoughtfully designed for convenience when traveling or carrying it with you wherever you go. It’s perfect for summer picnics, working out, beach days, hiking, or any other activity where you crave a refreshing drink, but don’t want to lug around a cooler to keep it cold.
These “Thermos style” bottles keep your drinks cold for 24 hours, and hot for 12 hours.
The ThermoFlask is BPA-free and thoughtfully designed for convenience when traveling or carrying it with you wherever you go. It’s perfect for travel, working out, the beach, picnics, and any place where you want a drink but aren’t going to lug a cooler or heating element around.
Even better, these bottles have a double-wall design the prevents the outside from condensing (“sweaty bottles that drip are unpleasant). Also good also to know is that Takeya water bottles are made of 18/8 premium food grade stainless steel and are BPA free.
We tested the huge 40 oz Thermoflask. which is a family-sized water bottle ($35). Our provided sample was purple, but it also comes in white, grey, black and turquoise.
The 40 oz size lets you bring enough coffee to keep your entire crew awake, or hydrate a family with cold drinks or water without wasting time to stop on the road to buy expensive, individual bottles. It can also hold an entire bottle of wine.
If you really need to store something you could use this large water bottle empty, to “hide things” while you’re camping, etc.
Our 40 oz. Takeya had a sip-chug-pour top that lets you drink directly from the flask and then lock down the all-in-one attacked cover so it doesn’t leak or drip. or simply remove the top entirely, and “chug it.”
You can also use the handy attached ring on the top to hook it to your backpack or lash it onto your bike.
Another nice feature is the double-wall vacuum insulated bottle that means it won’t “sweat” and make a mess in your cup holder or tote.
Takeya Thermoflask 14 oz. 14 oz. Mini
Smaller Takeya water bottles are great for the gym or to take to work or school.
If you want a gift idea under $20, take them a Takeya Thermoflask 14 oz.
This water bottle makes a fabulous holiday gift idea for just about everyone on your list, from the busy teen to the gym rat, students, and anyone who doesn’t want to be weighed down by a big water bottle,
This “mini-me” has all the bells and whistles of the big 40-oz. sister and comes in all of the same amazing colors. With Takeya Thermflasks, there’s no plastic to “leech” into your drinks (potentially unhealthy) or ruin the taste).
You can find Takeya products at mass market retailers (e.g. Target) but for more information visit the Takeya Web Site
Contigo (goes where we go)
The Contigo water bottles we selected are both, believe it or not, designed for children, and they feature two different tops with unique features
AUTOSEAL® – spill-proof, easy to clean and simple one-handed operation; and AUTOSPOUT® – easy one-handed operation with a pop-up spout and cover.
Contigo AUTOSPOUT® Striker Chill Stainless Steel Kids Water Bottle
We like to take water bottles with but the larger sizes are too heavy for our totes. Smaller sized water bottles give us just enough to sip on a short commute, but most water bottles under 10 oz. are made only for children. Finding one in that size that doesn’t have a design clearly for kids (so we feel ridiculous using it) is like finding a unicorn!
But we found the Contigo AUTOSPOUT® Striker Chill Stainless Steel Kids Water Bottle ($15.99) Item # 7139.
This is one of the very few mini-sized water bottles made with 100% FDA-approved BPA-free materials and a smooth stainless steel body without any silly designs that shout: “I’m using a kiddy cup!”
The metal bottle has a spill/leak-proof (Autospout top). Push the button on the top and the “sippy straw” pops up. Push it back down when you’re done drinking.
This Contigo container is perfect for hot or cold drinks with a Thermalock double-wall vacuum-insulation. We didn’t try this for 14 hours but we did note that there was no condensation with cold drinks.
A rubberized top features a big handle. We picked a colorful combo called: “Cherry Blossom” in pink/yellow/turquoise combo but there’s also lavender/turquoise/lime green or deep blue, light blue and orange *these are made in China which might not appeal to some, but with the scarcity of small sized water bottles we recommend it.
Lightweight and Spill-Proof AUTOSEAL® Courtney Kids Water Bottle
The Contigo kids collection also features another very appealing water bottle called the AUTOSEAL® Courtney Kids Water Bottle ($11.99) Item # 71096. At 20 oz. it’s much larger, but the lightweight, BPA-free plastic makes it easier for adults to tote around when full as well.
The Courtney is colorful, with a useful carabiner (5 color combos are available, we received the orange and blue).
What makes this spill-proof water bottle special is the closure. You can operate it with one hand.
The top locks with a slider bar so it can’t spill, but once the slider is released, it still won’t open until you press and hold the large button in the back. Then the water spout opening is released to let water flow for sipping. Once you’ve had your “sip” you take your hand off the button and the water spout opening closes. To keep it extra secure in your tote, the slider bar locks the entire top down so nothing gets in or out until you release it.
This water bottle is top shelf dishwasher safe. The underside of the lid flips open completely so you can really clean it.
The Autoseal really doesn’t let leaks happen — never. Very impressive.
You can find Contigo containers for adults as well. The major differences are the larger sized containers and less colorful tops.
