When it comes to fragrance, some feel that the “louder” it is, the better. If your fragrance announces your arrival, and lingers when you leave, they believe it is a success. But there are also a lot of fragrance lovers in every age group that want a personal fragrance to whisper, not shout.
Enter a new type of fragrance. One that is clean and fresh, and subtle. It isn’t like a body cleanser whose scent is enjoyable for just moments, and then is gone. It stays on the skin, but you have to get close to someone to smell it. Teachers, doctors, and anyone who needs to be in very close proximity to others without being offensive
(scent wise), are big fans of these subtle scents.
For subtle scent lovers, and plenty of others who don’t want to wear it like a heavy coat. Here are two to try: Simply Belle by Exceptional Parfums, and Clean Rain, created by perfumer Harry Fremont at Firmenich.
Simply Belle, introduced in 2012, is really not “simple ” at all. In other words, it is hardly a one note wonder. It is a sophisticated blending of notes, interesting enough for adults, but still light and floral, appealing to younger women who may be just experimenting and learning to love fragrance.
The top starts out with orange oil, violet leaves, and juicy peach. Other notes in Simply Belle include fresh jasmine, water lily, heliotrope and lily of the valley flowers for a feminine but not heavy floral heart. The bottom notes offer some addis additional staying power with classic notes including warm musk, and vanilla.
The packaging gives you the impression that you’re going to be spritzing something pretty, but not heavy. The fragrance arrives in a powder pink box with delicate, black lacy hearts ringing a white disk announcing “Simply Belle” in the center. The bottle within, is a modern interpretation of a classic: clean, clear glass that looks substantial (and it is, at 3.4 fl. oz. for $85.00). The demure, upward curve of the lines and the clear, plastic cube topper, gives the fragrance an uplifting feeling. The fragrance will make you happy, too. It is available at fragrancenet.com
Brand new and stunning, from CLEAN, is another light, fresh, clean, good for anyone scent called: CLEAN Rain. The green bottle is not just lovely to look at, it really announces that fact that the fragrance has clear, aquatic notes. It is a sheer scent, meaning that while it has floral and fruity notes, it feels light (“Clean”). The rundown of these notes include: Top Notes that immediately enter your nose such as Dewy Melon, and also Daffodil and Watermint. Heart Notes that are feminine but not really heavy include fresh Daisy, Water Lily and Violet Leaves. Base Notes, offering staying power and warmth, include Fluid (sheer) Musks and Sleek (sheer) Woods.
At a launch event, I had the opportunity and pleasure to meet the perfumer, Harry Fremont, in person. To me, perfumers like Fremont are as exciting as rock stars. Monsieur Fremont is charming, and easy to talk to about fragrance. For CLEAN Rain, this perfumer who is also apparently, an avid gardener, created what is described as an “aquatic floral fragrance.” As he described it ( I have paraphrased): CLEAN rain captures that simple, pleasurable moments of the scent of wet rain on flower buds, after a cleansing, fresh, rainfall. Only a celebrated perfumer could take such a moment or feeling, and make it tangible, in a fragrance bottle.
The sea green color of the classic, rectangular glass bottle is almost as as the color of the cold, fresh, pure water flowing over a huge waterfall (Think: Niagara). The fragrance inside is light, it has staying powder. The catch is that you have to be very close to the wearer, to really smell it. I think it will appeal most strongly to CLEAN’s younger demographic who want something modern and totally unlike what their moms would wear, but it will be a good choice for any woman (even a guy with an adventurous spirit) who wants something that smells, well…”clean,” and restrained, not “loud.”
CLEAN Rain is available in 60ml and 30ml Eau de Parfums which will retail for $69.00 and $38.00 respectively. It is now available at Sephora, Ulta and Dillard’s.
