Is sun protection sexy? Maybe a bottle of sun block isn’t, but skin that’s been protected stays younger and softer and much better looking, longer. So yes, sun protection is sexy. If you’re looking for something exciting, try a multi-tasking product that can do a lot more than just protect your skin from the sun. These products often come with unusual and/or cutting-edge ingredients and technology (and higher price-tags), but they keep your skin safe, and make life easier and (sometimes) even more pleasant. The good news is that there are sun-sational sun protection products in every price point. No matter what you pay, good sun protection saves your skin.
Pevonia Botanica is a luxurious, very effective, spa-centric skincare line. If you’re seeking something special, and just a little bit “sexy”, Pevonia’s got it! Try Pevonia Botanica Ligne Soleil SPF 30 ($42.00 5 fl. oz.). This is a broad spectrum sun screen that helps protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UVA & UVB rays. But the non-greasy, creamy lotion, packaged in the unusually shaped (ergonomically-designed) white bottle with clear, bright orange cap, is also enriched with Vitamins E, C, and B, that hydrate and guard against premature aging on your face and body. Actives include: Titanium Dioxide, Octisalate, and Octinoxate. It’s paraben-free and good for all skin types. It may be a bit pricey, but you get some pleasure for your money, with a luxe formula that moisturizes your skin as it protects it, and leaves skin feeling pampered, and just a bit cooler and more comfortable. If you have sensitive skin or tend to break out from sun screens, this one might be your new BSF (best sun friend). Buy Pevonia Botanica in select spas, and online at www.pevoniabotanica.com
Mary Kay is so popular, you might just take their sun protection products being good, for granted. Mary Kay has plenty of good sun protection products, of course, but The Advice Sisters are fans of multi-taskers, particularly the Mary Kay TimeWise Day Solution Sunscreen SPF 35 ($30.00 1 fl. oz.). For starters, we love the elegant, pale pearly pink bottle with pump top so we don’t have to stick our fingers into a jar. But there is nothing “girly” about the anti-aging, SPF 35 UVA/UVB protection (10% Homosalate; 2% Avobenzone; 5% Octisalate; 2%Octocrylene and 4% Oxybenzone) , and the fact that it has calming peptides and botanicals to relax the look of expression lines, and other wrinkles and skin imperfections. The product is oil-free, non-comedogenic, and fragrance free, too so it is especially welcome by those with sensitive skin. Apply it (liberally) 15 minutes before you go out in the sun, and every 2 hours.
For the rest of your body and your face, we also really like Mary Kay’s Sun Care Sunscreen Broad UVA/UVBSpectrum SPF 30 ($14.00 4 fl. oz.). The lightweight and oil-free lotion is creamy and rich, but it dissolves quickly into your skin, leaving it moisturized as well as nicely protected. You can use it on your face as well as your body, and it will stay water-resistant and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes. It’s suitable for sensitive skin and is non-comedogenic. The bright orange=y gold flip tube is attractive, but the thing that will make you reach for it (and actually use it) is the fact that this product is particularly pleasant. It blends into skin without a struggle, without smell, or residue, and yet, it has staying power. Vitamin A conditions, while Vitamin C and W# provide antioxidant protection, and Camellia Sinesis Leaf extract is both antioxidant and soothes and calms skin. Actives include 2% Avobenzone; 10% Homosalate; 7.5% Octinoxate; 5% Octisalate, and 4% Oxibenzone/ This is an all-around lovely sun protection that the entire family can, and will, like.
Some men are still squeamish about putting anything on their faces, especially sun protection. “I wear a hat so I’m protected enough,” my own hubby, insists. But it isn’t enough. So I’m glad that Mary Kay has MK men, an anti-aging line of products made just for him, including the MKMen® Advanced Facial Hydrator Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($22.00 3 fl. oz.). This broad spectrum product has grey and black packaging to distinguish it from the ladies, and it hydrates (Mary Kay claims for over 10 hours) while it protects his skin from UVA and UVB rays. But it is a multi-tasker that also has Mary Kay’s patented MKMen® Complex to help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. plus, an antioxidant to fight free radicals. All he needs to know is that it works as long as he re-applies it every couple of hours. It is hypoallergenic, good for sensitive skin, oil and freagrance-free, and won’t clog his pores. The product feels so lightweight and pleasant, even my squeamish husband, will use it! Actives include 2% Avobenzone; 5% Homosalate; 5% Octisalate; @% Octocrylene and 4% Oxybenzone. The Advice Sisters suggest that most people lighten up their moisturizer for the warmer months. Between the heat, perspiration, extra layers of sun protection and whatnot, your skin can break out, and large pores may appear. But your skin still needs to be hydrated. That’s why we like Murad’s new Balancing Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15 | PA++ ($35.00). This new product is part of Murad’s Pore Reform, a new line of products entirely dedicated to visibly reduce the appearance of pore size and blackheads. This super-lightweight lotion controls oil to help prevent shine and blackheads, while delivering some protection (SPF 15) for daily use against UVA/UVB rays, and also hydration for smoother, softer, nicer skin. There are no sulfates or phthlates in the product, but there are microscopic spheres containing vitamins A, C, and E to support natural cell. Japanese alder flower extract helps prevent blackhead formation. Lactic acid and amino acids balance and hydrate. You can easily layer this on other products and it’s even good for your chest and neck. We really like this formula, featuring actives of 7.5% octinoxate, 2.5% avobenzone, and 2% oxybenzone.
Also from Murad, and for perfect portability, even in a small purse or makeup bag, you can’t do better than Murad’s Essential-C Sun Balm Broad Spectrum SPF 35 PA+++ ($25.00 .33 oz.). This mini-sized, slim, dial-up stick of sun protection provides good, broad spectrum protection against the sun’s damaging UVA/UVB rays, free radicals, and dehydration. It also helps to keep moisture in your skin. An unusual ingredient in this little powerhouse is It broccoli extract that stimulates skin’s natural defense against UV damage (we know if was good to eat, but who knew it was also good for your skin)? Another good-to-eat but also good for your skin ingredient is tangerine butter that locks in hydration and help smooth skin. Antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E work to keep skin looking healthy. This product is made without parabens, sulfates or phthlates. Actives are @% avobenzone, 2% octinoxate and 2% octocrylene. There is no scent, and no stickness. It’s silky, easy, we love it, and think it’s well worth the price. Get yours at: www.murad.com and follow them @MuradCares

CC creams are all the rage, but one that has SPF 50+ UVA/UVB protection along with anti-aging properties and a hydrating serum is one to treasure. IT (Intelligent Cosmetics) wowed The Advice Sisters with a UPF 50+ CC cream ($38.00 1.08 fl. oz.) that is truly a multi-tasking wonder. Five shades from very light to medium deep (the “medium” is in the photo), are full coverage, and help hydrate skin (by over 79% according to IT Cosmetics). The Advice Sisters don’t advocate baking in the sun, but if you’re going out to sunbathe, one way to keep your skin looking sexy and nourished and keep your tan longer after sun exposure, is with Phytomer Sun Serenity Renewing Tan Enhancing Fluid ($50.00 1.6 fl. oz.) . This luxe “aftercare” lotion makes skin, sexy. It is so lightweight that except for a subtle floral scent, you may forget you even applied it. But then you’ll look at your skin, and you’ll remember that it never looked better. This apres sun product should be applied daily, morning and evening, for an entire week following sun exposure. Sun-parched skin feels dry and can flake and peel. This product keeps your skin hydrated and silky, while it helps counter-act UV damage. The key ingredients are: D-Tox microalgae (repairs cellular damange caused by UV rays); Marine oligosaccharides (derived from brown algae, this provides anti-inflammatory actions); salicorne oil (anti-aging and helps to prolong a tan by preventing peeling and by strengthening the skin barrier); maritime lavender oil (stimulates the production of lipids and epidermal proteins and reinforces cellular cohesion); and; Pheohydrane ( traps water in the skin for better hydration). While this isn’t a large sized tube, a little goes a long way. Even if you’re not baking in the sun (and you know you shouldn’t) you’ll find yourself wanting to smooth this on your face and other sensitive areas — it instantly makes it look plump and healthy, and oh so silky, too!
