When a fragrance wins the coveted Prestige Fragrance award of the year from the Fragrance Foundation, it is a big deal. Your fragrance is in competition with the best of the best, voted upon not just by the members of The Fragrance Foundation, but industry influencers, media, and more. So let me get right to the point: Sì by Giorgio Armani won the Women’s Prestige Fragrance of the Year at the 2015 Fragrance Foundation Awards!
This awards ceremony is always a glittering, red carpet extravaganza — the most prominent and prestigious celebratory event of the fragrance industry. These awards have been held annually in New York City since 1973 and are attended by members of the international fragrance community, designers and celebrities from the fashion, theatre, film, and television industries plus some very select members of the press. I attended this amazing event in 2009 and I’ll never forget the glamour of it all!
I can’t think of anyone more glamorous than Giorgio Armani (the man and his fashions) so it seems reasonable, fitting, appropriate that his fragrance, Sì by Giorgio Armani, won top honors in the top (prestige) category this year.
The first thing to note about Si by Giorgio Armani is that it has some distinct references to some of Mr. Armani’s other fragrances in terms of how the bottle looks, more specifically, the incredible, Armani Prive fragrances (seem our 2005 and 2007 reviews). These pricey ($26o-$290) perfumes are housed in glass-lined rectangular boxes of dark, African Kotibe wood topped with a semi-precious stone. Si by Giorgio Armani adapts the sophistication, elegance and luxury of the Prive collection to a nice, slightly taller, rectangular glass bottle smooth and devoid of ornament to showcase a blush pink juice. The topper is a touchstone of the lightest blush pink (on the Eau de Toilette, black on the Eau de Parfum)– a sensual, curved “river stone” that is reminiscent of the ones on the Prive collection, although these toppers are resin, not stone.
You immediately get the impression that Sì is a feminine fragrance, but a modern one. In fact, the tag line is: “a tribute to modern femininity, an irresistible combination of grace, strength, and independent spirit….nothing about the Sì woman is plain – her desire for frivolity, strength, softness, elegant sensuality and her thirst to live in freedom. She affirms what she is through nuances: the state midway between what is and what seems to be, and balancing depth and lightness. The Sì woman is free and knows how to make her vision of the world known. She represents the calm strength of femininity and courage, the courage to say Sì! and to state it enthusiastically.” The absolutely gorgeous actress Cate Blanchett is the face of the fragrance (she is also the face of the luxury skincare brand SK-II)
What does this all mean for you, the fragrance fan? To look at Ms. Blanchett you’d get the idea that this is for a slightly older crowd, but you’d be wrong. It’s definitely not a teenage scent, and not for the “Hello Kitty” crowd either, but it has a youthful appeal. For a younger woman who is sophisticated enough to be past overtly fruity florals, this is possibly a step up for date night. For women who are over a certain age, it’s a sensual fragrance that stands day or night. It’s a light fragrance with staying power like a woman who speaks softly but knows she has clout and that’s a woman of virtually any age who has confidence!
Si by Giorgio Armani is a modern Chypre, one of my personal favorite fragrance categories, but it takes a while to get there. It starts strongly with fruit, a deep blackcurrant nectar that moves reasonably quickly into airy florals. It’s the base where the magic really happens, smelling of vanilla first, but it’s the musky blond woods that lead you to the well balanced and sensual ending.
Chypre, Blackcurrant Nectar, Airy Florals, Musky Blond Wood. * Chypre is “Cyprus” in French. and chypre fragrances are characterized by the contrast between s fresh citrus accord and s woody-oakmoss notes, often with patchouli as an element as well.
To get a bit more technical, in this fragrance, the cassis (black currant) is from a special extraction and it’s so prominent at first and so delicious, you almost want your nose to drink it in, but it is tempered by two types of enveloping, sensual vanilla: one absolutely natural and the other fancifully described as “a Jungle essence™ for an addictive and bewitching sensation. ” Rose de Mai, enhanced by notes of freesia blends with a bit of patchouli in the heart, but like these flowers in nature, they fade to reveal the amazing, blond amber wood, intense orcanox™ . On skin, it’s the perfect choice.
The perfumer of this amazing fragrance is Christine Nagel who has worked for a number of prestigious perfume houses. She has won plenty of accolades over the years including Best feminine fragrance of the past 20 years for Narciso Rodriguez for Her in 2012 Perfumer of the Year / Cosmétique Mag in 2009; Prix International du Parfum / Prix François Coty in 2007; Fragrance Foundation Award for Ambre Soie / Armani Privé in 2006; Fragrance Foundation Award for Narcisco Rodriguez for Her in 2004.
