I discovered Smart Alert at a Get Geeked Editor’s preview in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighorhood. The design was so modern and cool, it caught my eye. But when I learned what it did, I had to try it. Just about everyone who has an iPhone 4S or later running iOS 8+ or Android phone with Bluetooth 4.0 and running 4.3+ plus in-home WiFi and a United States residence address, can make Smart Alert work well.
It’s easy to use Smart Alert once you’ve set it up. To do so, you first connect it to your home WiFi and download the Leeo Smart Alert app on your smart phone (good that it’s for iOS and Android). This part was super-easy and the instructions gave me step by step directions. To actually get the Smart Alert to tell you what’s going on around it, and to change the color of the light for a nightlight, you have to do a few more things. I had some WiFi issues and while it wasn’t the fault of Smart Alert, it took some time (and a slight frustration) to get the Smart Alert to understand what we wanted it to do. However, once it was connected to our WiFi and we went through the guided steps to get everything going it worked flawlessly (that is, until someone pulled the unit out of the wall and didn’t put it back in). The moment I plugged the unit in again, it was fine. Had this happened while I was traveling however, I wouldn’t’ be able to fix the issue until I and my Smart Alert were in the same place, in person.
Most of the time, you may not think about the Smart Alert as anything more than an attractive night light that you can adjust for brightness and a literal rainbow of colors. But the Smart Alert knows how to detect noises in the frequency range used by smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. If one of those alarms go off and you’re not home (or even if you are), Smart Alert will …well…alert you and your contacts that there is a potential dangerous situation. Certainly you can find other similar products, but you can do a lot more with Smart Alert. I’ve come to rely on it when I’m not home, and also enjoy the beautiful turquoise night light I programmed that welcomes me home when it’s dark.
Although Leeo is a new company, the main people have plenty of tech experience. The lead product designer is Robert Brunner who is credited with being involved with the creation of the original Beats (among other things). The company’s COO is Charles Huang, creator of the super-popular Guitar Hero. The CEO and co-founder is Adam Gettings, who was previously involved in creating first response robots but changed his focus when a friend’s house burned down while he was away from his home (from misfortune comes genius)!
Smart Alert doesn’t take the place of working smoke and Co2 detectors, but it does enhance the safety of your home because if you’re not there, you can’t hear any alarms — and Smart Alert, can! Even better, there is no monthly fee to use it (just the one time fee for the device).
