Back in 2011 we got super-excited about the Soda Stream (see review). The idea was revolutionary, an attractive, non-electrical way to make sparkling water and carbonated beverage at home without any fuss or bother.
Before Soda Stream arrived on the market, to give water “fizz” you had to use a glass or metal flacon with a handle that contained the CO2 cartridge in it or deal with seltzer bottles. he Soda Stream also uses a CO2 cartridge, but it’s housed in the back of this ” soda-fountain-style” device, so it won’t explode or break.
My mother once ended up in the emergency room with a 6″ gash in her leg from a seltzer bottle that simply decided to explode because the content were under pressure. No one in my family has used a seltzer type bottle of any type since then as they’re unpredictable.
The Soda Stream uses a CO2 cartridge, but it’s housed in the back of this ” soda-fountain-style” device, so it won’t explode or break.
Whether you want your family to drink healthier carbonated drinks, or you just want to control the amount of preservatives and sugar in your beverages, with a Soda Stream you know what is in the bottle. It’s also much more economical and eco-friendly, as the BPA-free carbonating bottles, reusable for up to three years (this can save thousands of bottles and cans from ending up in landfills each year).
Since 2011 there have been several updates to the Soda Stream collection. For holiday 2016 we are endorsing the Soda Stream Power (srp. $150), a soda stream that you plug into the wall and that has an electric, one-touch panel. In addition, the Soda Stream Power has an easy snap/lock bottle insertion mechanism that ensures no matter which of the 3 levels of carbonation you choose, the water won’t “froth over” the top of the bottle (this sometimes was an issue with the original Soda Stream).
Soda Stream power features a replaceable 60L co2 cylinder that is sealed into the back so it is totally safe. The unit comes with a power adapter. It’s pretty much “plug and play.”
To use a Soda Stream Power, all you do is fill the included plastic bottle (it’s elegantly curved and has a silver bottom, so call it a “carafe”) to the fill line. Push the bottle up and forward into the Soda Stream Power until you hear it clicks. Push one of the three carbonation levels on the front panel to release the CO2 and carbonate the water. The rest is automatic and works in literally, seconds.
Carbonated beverages are still so popular. Soda Stream has a wide range of flavorings but you can mix your soda stream water with fruit juices as well. .Add the Soda Stream flavoring of your choice (approx $5 each), or the juice (or wine) or your choice.
In all fairness, taste is very subjective. In our tests, even the naturally sweetened flavors were deemed a bit sweet for our adult tastes, but we’re not really soda or sweetened beverage drinkers. It’s worth trying a few different types of flavorings to see if they are to your liking.
Or just enjoy clear, sparkling water 24/7!
Soda Stream Power won’t take up much room on your counter, it is slimmer than a normal coffee maker at (4.8″w; 16.6″h; 9.1″d). You can get it in white or black.
Soda Stream has 9 different models (some electric, some not). There is nifty comparison page so you can find the right one for you.
Any of the Soda Stream models would make a great holiday gift for singles, couples, a family gift, and a way to better health in 2017. Start Now.
