Beauty products can be cute, sexy, expensive and (add any other words that you wish). But some beauty products are workhorses, must-haves that we sometimes take for granted, Here two unsung beauty workhorses that we know and love from three iconic brands, Clinique, Cutex, and Revlon and a novel one: Liquid Palisade. These deserve to be lauded for their results!
Was Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion the first moisturizer you ever used? For many of us, myself included, it was. Most of your friends probably have Clinique in their bathrooms or on their dressing tables. The lemon yellow tinted moisturizer in the square bottle is lightweight, but it helps to keep skin smooth and healthy looking, making even dry skin look and feel silkier. That’s why so many women have loved it literally, for generations now.
However, time marches on. Clinique has created a “new & improved” version: Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion + ($26.00 4.2 fl. oz. with pump or cap). This is still a sneak peek, since the product launches in August (so you don’t have too long to wait). The unsung heroine of dry skin everywhere, Clinique Dramatically Different+ looks on the outside, like the same, beloved moisturizer Clinique has sold for decades. But inside, it features a new complex that is supposed to strengthen your skins’ own moisture barrier by 54%. More moisture stays in. Skin feels soft, springy. Has a glow. The product is especially welcome for people with very dry, distressed skin but especially for combo skin that is dry in the cheeks, but normal to oily in the T-zone.
Why did Clinique feel that they had to change a tried and true, beloved product? Why wouldn’t they make something better, as technology allows. The new complex in the formula contains a blend of sunflower seek cake, barley extract and cucumber extract. That may sound good enough to eat, but it actually helps you skin become more resistant to environmental stressors (Clinique claims up to a 54% in the skin’s barrier strength in just 8 weeks). The formula has the powerhouse of hyaluronic acid, glycerin and urea to keep moisture IN. T
Clinique says the famously silky texture is unchanged, and on the skin, that’s true. But the actual lotion feels slightly less viscous that the original, and slides on more easily,. You can almost feel it as a “moisture drink” for your skin as it works. In fact, this new formula is supposed to double the moisturization levels all day, but it doesn’t have any oil to make your face shiny, or to cause breakouts. It is still also a godsend for those with sensitive skin, as it is 100% fragrance free and allergy tested. In fact, Clinique is known to allergy test their products 12 times on 600 people. If even one of those 7,200 applications results in an allergic reaction, they go back to the drawing board. On this, you definitely can rely.

Another workhorse that might sometimes be taken for granted, is the familiar flat iron. How many people thank their lucky stars that flat irons are affordable, and come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and with a myriad of bells and whistles. These days, most of them also have ceramic plates to help hair retain moisture and lock out frizz. But Revlon’s got a new flat iron called “Hydrasmooth” that has all that, and another distinctive feature that make it really stand out. It is a 1″ straightener in an attractive, tomato red, but you’ll notice that there is a little clear window on the top of the iron. This holds about a tablespoon of water that converts to steam as you glide the iron through your hair (pins on the inside of the plates release the steam when you press the plates together between your hair.
The iron heats up to 430F fast. By the time I plugged it in, and reach over for my hair brush (about 20 seconds), it was hot! Other irons get that hot, but you have to wait (and who has time for that, these days)? Two other buttons on the side let you turn the iron on and off (and there is a little power light so you know when the unit is on) and a button that slides to turn on the steam. option.
Now it might sound counter-intuitive to use water on hair to de-frizz it, but it’s the loss of moisture in hair that makes it puff up like a frightened cat. The use of steam actually helps reduce dryness and breakage and promotes softer strands with less tangling., too. And the ceramic plates transfer heat evenly, for healthier results. You can use the iron wet or dry, but if you have a lot of hair, you’ll want to keep hair dry or at least just damp-ish. Be prepared to hear a “hiss!” and see the steam coming off your curls (it’s ok, it is just water evaporating away from the surface of your hair). The flat iron smooths out hair admirably without the steam, too. For most people, for best results, it is better to just dry (or mostly dry) your hair with a blow dryer or let it air dry first, and then use the flat iron.
Other reasons to love this Revlon Hydrasmooth flat iron: the plates are curved, and that looks particularly sleek (like a formula 1 racing car), especially with the bright red color of the iron, but it’s not just a pretty face. This flat iron also allows you to “round off” the end of your hair (experiment by flicking your wrist up or down) so that you can smooth straight and flat, or also add a bit of a soft curve or wave to your style. A long, swivel cord makes it even easier to move from one side of your head, to the other. But maybe the best reason to love the new Revlon Hydrasmooth™ straightener is that you can get it for just $39.99. That means it’s way less than other straighteners that feature steam (The Advice Sisters reviewed on a few years ago that was close to $100). This makes it a must have, not a serious splurge and you don’t need an excuse to get one and try it for yourself!

Every fashionista loves nail polish. It’s one of the little things you can count on to make an outfit and show your personality. We spend tons of time shopping for just the right color. But when it comes time to take the polish off, most of us don’t give much thought to the products that let us do it quickly and safely. One company that has been a virtual workhorse for nail polish removal for decades, is Cutex. I remember my mom had decorative metal box in which she kept her “nail tools,” including a bottle of Cutex nail polish remover.
Cutex®, producing nail care products since 1911, launched the first nail polish available in 10 shades back in the twenties and since then, smart women in over 100 countries have trusted this nail cleaning and conditioning expert, to bring them complete nail care solutions to help pamper nails. Since then, they’ve come a really long way, producing both nail polish, and nail polish removers. Now there’s Cutex® Advanced Revival Formula. The Cutex® Advanced Revival formula is the first innovation in nail polish remover in more than 15 years. The patent-pending formula combines the power of acetone with strengthening and nourishing natural apricot seed and parilla drying oils. *FYI: Perilla oil (perilla frustescens) is a leafy green plant that is rich in linoleic acids and anti-oxidants. It is also anti bacterial, anti viral. In case you’re wondering how parilla drying oil works, here is the lowdown: natural drying oils begin as a liquid and turn into a solid when exposed to air, allowing the acetone to evaporate. Through the drying process nails are strengthened, leaving them feeling healthy and clean after just one use. The nourishing and protective coating of the botanical drying oils creates a healthier canvas for applying and holding a new polish.
Cutex has always been known for making nail polish removers, but now they are super-effective in removing polish quickly. That means there is less scrubbing and rubbing to get the polish off, and less time on your nails means less damage, too. The Advanced Revival line includes Advanced Revival One-Step Remover Pads, Advanced Revival Liquid Nail Polish Remover, the Cutex® Corrector Pen and Cutex® Regular Instant Nail Polish Remover Jar.
For travel, The Advice Sisters are loving the Cutex® Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover Pads ($3.99/10 pads) that also condition nails and cuticles in one step. The patented formula is designed to remove polish faster and create an ideal canvas for a base coat or nail polish that follows. Each felt pad is individually wrapped and removes polish from 10 nails, fingers or toes (*if you are using glitter polish or have many layers of polish, you may need two). These, the TSA, can’t take away! Also keep one (or two) in your purse, just in case your nail polish decides to chip right before that important meeting and there’s no time for a manicure.
The Corrector Pen is one of those things you might not realize you need, until you try it. What it does is clean up any polish that has slopped onto the sides of your nails and along the cuticle. At nail salons, the manicurists tend to do this with a fingernail or a cotton-wrapped stick, but trying to do that on your own hand, is not easy. The corrector pen whisks away mistakes in one swipe. This pen also comes with 4 replacement tips, so you always have a clean tip to work with.
But for everyday purposes, we love the Cutex® Regular Instant Nail Polish Remover. Acetone, along with botanicals including
Strengthen & nourishes with botanical oils for natural nails
Cutex® Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover, complete with black currant, flaxseed and apricot kernel botanical oils, strengthen and nourish your nails, while it whisks away that old polish with a cotton ball or pad. This polish is also packaged in a remover jar, where all you have to do is twist your fingers, one at a time against the remover-soaked sponge in the jar. *the jar may dry out a bit as you continue to use it, but it’s well worth the convenience.

Liquid Palisade ($22.00) sounds like it might be a hot, new beverage, but it’s actually a novel way to get a less messy, mani/pedi that you may never have considered. The tube with brush lets you apply a clear cover that protects your nail cuticles from polish that slops over. You simply apply Liquid Palisade anywhere you DON”T want nail polishy to stick. Apply your polish, then peel off the liquid palisade to reveal clean cuticles. You can also use it to create nail tips and nail art pattners. Tip: For a basic mani, apply the product over your cuticle and the surrounding areas and let it dry completely. Then push it backwards towards your cuticle to full expose your nail bed. Don’t peel off the Liquid Palisade until after the polish sets, but do it before it’s completely dry. If you can’t stand the look of polish on the sides of your nails, or on the cuticle, but you just can’t manage to be that precise with a bottle of polish, this is for you. **.Do not use this product if you have any skin allergies or are allergic to Havea, which is commonly called latex.
