Question #1: MY FAVORITE PRODUCT/COLOR HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. WHAT DO I DO NOW?
We know that many people just fall in love with a particular shade or product that they’ve been wearing for a long, long time. But consider that when a product is out of production, it is probably also out of date. Likely there’s another shade that will flatter you, probably in a newer texture or formula.
If you really can’t let go of a color, there are places that will re-create if for you. But maybe your complexion and/or skin tone has changed over time and something else really would be more flattering. This could be the universe telling you that it is time for a real update!
Question #2: WHAT FOUNDATION IS MY PERFECT MATCH?
This is a tough one! There really isn’t one perfect match, no matter what the companies marketing your “personalized” blend would want you to believe. There is more to selecting a foundation than simply picking a color (one company’s ivory is not another company’s ivory, anyway) and since your skin changes throughout the year, the formula and tints you choose today may not flatter next month.
The best way to pick a good foundation is to try it in proper lighting. You can’t pick your color from a blister pack in a drugstore or online from a color swatch. Although we review a lot of foundations on advicesisters.com, don’t feel bad if you don’t always get it right, we don’t, either!
Our best advice is to purchase something you can return (save your receipt) so you try it at home and it just doesn’t look right you can try, try again. For a few more tips to help you pick the right foundation read Beige, Nude, Sand, Buff Ivory? How to Choose the Right Color for Your Face .
Question #3 Question #4 ARE THOSE EXPENSIVE CREAMS YOU REVIEW REALLY WORTH IT?
Like most things in life, some things are worth it and some aren’t. You do sometimes pay for high-priced celebrity ambassadors and glossy advertising, but developing cutting edge ingredients and formulas isn’t an inexpensive proposition, either.
If you want the latest and greatest you’ll pay a premium. We might also add that ithe most expensive products on the market (or the cheapest) won’t do a thing for you if they’re not the right ones for your skin, you don’t use them properly and regularly and mostly for a prolonged period of time.
Question #4: WHEN IT COMES TO SHAMPOO, DOES PRICE REALLY MATTER?
Not all shampoos are created equal. There are many products that are created for specific hair issues or that use cutting edge ingredients. If you’ve spent major $$$ coloring your hair, getting highlights, or a chemical treatment, or if your hair is damaged, it’s worth the extra few dollars for haircare products that protect your hair and your investment. On the other hand, there are plenty of good products that will also work, and we have plenty of reviews of those on advicesisters.com as well.
On the other hand, there are plenty of good products that will also work, and we have plenty of reviews of those on advicesisters.com as well. We are less certain the companies touting shampoos as having properties such as “gluten-free” matter very much, since you’re not eating them. If you really need to be 100% gluten free, maybe it’s worth a little extra but otherwise, what’s in the bottle is meant simply to cleanse your hair, moisturize it, and protect it.
QUESTIONS #5: DO I REALLY HAVE TO USE SPF EVERY DAY?
YES you must!! Read http://www.advicesisters.com/beauty/sunscreen-and-sun-protection
Question #6: SHOULD I BELIEVE CONSUMER REVIEWS?
At advicesisters.com we have reviewed literally thousands of each type of product when it comes to testing, evaluating and comparing them. On consumer sites some reviewers may be compensated to post positive reviews without even trying the product. Others may say negative or positive things without any experience with similar products. Still other may say that a product is the “best I’ve ever used” but they’ve used only a few other similar products in their entire lifetime.
You can’t tell who the reviewers are. While we can’t tell you not to trust them, we would say to be cautious. However, if there are many, many reviews and they all say the same thing about a product, it’s a good bet that this one aspect of a product (e.g. it has a chemical scent or a very liquid consistency) is probably true.
Question #7: MY MAGAZINE SAY THIS IS TRENDING, SHOULD I TRY IT?
No, yes, maybe. Wear it, buy it, use it if you love it and it flatters you. You’re smart enough to know when a trend is not for you or it’s obviously fugly-crazy. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment.
Keep in mind that what you see on the runway or in fashion magazines are often just concepts. Smart, savvy fashionistas translate them, make them their own, and use them sparingly.
Glitter lips, for example, don’t really look great on anyone although they may be fun for a club. Orange eyes or outlandish colors on your face are not going to impress your date, and certainly not at the office. If you want to try these trends, know when they’re appropriate. And use a little trend-y-ness, not a boat-load!
Question #8: CAN EVERYONE REALLY WEAR RED LIPSTICK?
Yes. There’s at least one red (or almost red) tone that will flatter everyone. Advicesisters.com has reviewed a lot of red lippies over the years (type red lipstick into our search box and reviews should pop up). Our latest is 15 RED Lipsticks to Ring Out the Old, Rock in the New! At least one of these is going to flatter you.
Question #9: IF I CAN GET A BRANDED PRODUCT CHEAPER, SHOULD I?
If a company suggests you purchase their products only from authorized dealers or salons it could be because they have had issues with diversion or grey market goods. This is no “50 shades” we’re talking about–it’s a serious problem.
Diverted or grey market goods can look like the real thing, but like a faux designer bag, you might get some serious trouble along with that cheaper price. Read Diversion: A Serious Problem You Should Know About and Don’t Get Fooled By Faux Fragrances: What’s in that bargain bottle? Even some popular retailers end up with diverted or grey market goods. If your favorite brands are deeply discounted, be wary. If a price seems too good to be true, it usually is.
