The other day I attended an Editor’s Showcase event at the NY Marriott Marquis called “Snack Attack.” The exhibitors were, as you might suspect, purveyors of yummy things that you can snack on, and most of them were surprisingly healthy. It’s 4:00 and your body is craving…something sweet. Or maybe crunchy, or salty…why not make it something that is also at least a little bit healthy? There are SO many choices when hunger strikes. Some of my favorite snacks at the Snack Attack Editor’s Event were old favorites, but others were new to me. Most can be found in your local supermarket or health food stores.
The Almond Board of California was exhibiting and I didn’t need to be told that almonds are truly a wonder food. Did you know that a handful of almonds (about 23) are a cholesterol-free treat containing 6 grams of protein, 3.5 grams of fiber, and 13 grams of ‘good’ unsaturated fats, with only 1 gram of saturated fat)? They give you instant, but consistent energy, so you don’t experience that “crashing” sensation you might with a sugary snack.|
Deep River Snacks are new to me, but their all natural, Gluten Free line of Kettle Chips, Multigrain Tortilla Chips, Baked Fries and Popcorn are truly delicious. There are traditional flavors but also some like sweet Maui Onion (love it!) that will particularly appeal to adults. Most are not very high in sodium either (a problem with a lot of salty snacks). . Their products are created in a nut free facility and are cooked in Sunflower Oil.
I didn’t know that Good Health Natural Foods was the originator of Veggie Stix, but their somewhat spicier version is delicious. They have a variety of “healthier” for you from Olive Oil Potato Chips to Peanut Butter filled Pretzels, to yummy popcorn, all worth a taste!
If you’re the sort that loves to dig the half-popped, crunchy kernels out of the popcorn bowl, you already know how great they are. HALFPOPS™ takes the concept just a bit further, with their all-natural, gluten free, partially (air popped) popped popcorn snack. These kernels are crunchier than the popped corn, and they come in two favorite popcorn flavors: natural with sea salt and butter, and with white cheddar cheese.
I had a bias about Jerky. I used to think that jerky (beef or otherwise) was just the kind of thing guys brought into the woods to eat while hunting or drinking beer. But while I’ve seen a lot of it in places in WalMart and Target, Jack Link’s Jerky has some healthier versions including turkey and chicken jerky as well as beef and ham and they come in strips and in nuggets. They’re high in protein, low in fat, calories and carbs, and they don’t have any trans fats. Yes, it’s chewy, and yes, it’s tasty. It’s not terribly caloric and while there is sodium, it’s not sky high for most products. You don’t have to refrigerate it, so it’s great for a travel snack for everyone, even the kids. Now I know that jerky is delicious and I stand, corrected!
For more than 40 years, Kozy Shack® has offered wholesome, ready-to-eat refrigerated desserts. What can I say except that they’re delicious, and some (e.g. the light chocolate pudding) are just 60 calories per serving. Their new, bread pudding varieties sent my husband into fits of exclaiming “yummm…yummm.” The new, bread puddings are perfect for Summer entertaining! Plop one out of the container and onto a pretty plate, add some garnish or a coulis, and you’ve got a fancy dessert you didn’t have to make!
LEAN CUISINE® is a lunch and sometimes, dinner staple in my house. Yes, I do eat them. Although they’re low in fat and calories, and most are low in sugar, the sodium levels vary widely. But they taste good, and make it easy to eat when you just don’t have any time to cook or when you want something complicated that you know you won’t cook as well as Lean Cusine can do it. Even better are the new, LEAN CUISINE® Dips with Pita Bread and LEAN CUISINE® Spring Rolls. I can’t think of a better way to entertain “the girls” –great snack food that they won’t hate you for in the morning!
Pillsbury® Sweet Moments™ were my last stop yesterday, and maybe I saved the best, for last. These little bites of cheesecake are the size of a large chocolate, but they pack a huge taste wallop without making you feel too guilty. Everyone is entitled to a treat. The moist, packed with flavor Raspberry Brownie Cheesecake and Caramel Brownie Cheesecake are the newest bites and they are fabulous. We sampled them at room temperature, but eat them from the refrigerator or even, the freezer, for more delightful fun. One piece a day might just keep “the grumpies” away.
…and there were quite a few snack bars, from delicious SoyJoy (pineapple is my favorite); Balance Bar (yummy Cinnamon Bun and chocolate almond biscotti) and Balance Bar’s newest for women called Nimble, full of antioxidants and other things, and new Quaker Chewy Smashbars (made with pretzels for added crunch). When I know I’m going to be running around, I always tuck a snack bar into my purse to keep from eating something, worse (rhyme, unintended). Most are well under 200 calories, and will give you good energy to keep you going, instead of the characteristic crash you get after candy bars and other sweet snacks.
