Last night The Advice Sisters attended a kick off at the French Cheese Board (FCB) cheese pop-up store at 26 west 39th street in Manhattan to hear about a unique fund-raising event that may put Thomas Jefferson’s name on the auditorium of an international wine center.
Why TJ? You might wonder? Well, first of all there are over 180 countries (and every State in the United States) that produce wine, and Thomas Jefferson was the first American to serve wine at a State Function and later grew vines and produced wine on his property in Monticello, Virginia. Also, amazingly, there is no one center for wine in the world. So for the newly formed American Friends of the Cité des civilisations du vin (AFCCV) the goal for the American Friends to raise funds name the auditorium at the wine center the Thomas Jefferson Auditorium (www.afccv.org for more information and LIKE their Facebook Page) at an international wine center in Bordeaux. It seems fitting to honor Mr. Jefferson, who, among many other important contributions to our Country, brought wine to America.
The kick-off event last night featured not just a variety of delicious cheeses and wines paired by Sommelier Alexander LaPratt of Atrium in Dumbo, 15 Main Street, Brooklyn, but also George Sape, President of the American Friends of the Cité des civilisations du vin. Invited guests and media heard details of the main event, the fund raiser, which will be held on Thursday April 30th the Delegates Dining Room at the United Nations. For John Dunham who covered this event for The Advice Sisters, meeting a Master Sommelier from Brooklyn was, he sheepishly admitted, the highlight!
On April 30th however, there will be a private reception for 193 U.N. Ambassadors invited (6pm to 7pm) for the Secretary General and the Ambassadors of the 193 countries members of the United Nations, and then the invited guests and VIPS will experience the main event: Wines and Foods of the World Extravaganza at the United Nations (7pm to 10pm) in the United Nations Delegates Dining Room.
Guests will taste wines from over 50 countries, including France, the United States, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Germany or South Africa of course, but also wines from China, India, Brazil, Lebanon, Kenya, Israel, Australia, Thailand, Tunisia, Ethiopia and many more “unexpected” countries. The atmosphere will be elegant but not formal, allowing guests to mingle and enjoy international foods prepared by some of the world’s most respected chefs. Tip: if you are going to taste a lot of wines, either use the “spit buckets” or eat a lot of food and drink a lot of water between tastes!
If you are interested in attending, there are only a limited number of invitations, and be prepared to open your check-book (it is for a good cause, of course and the organization is a 502 (c) 3e non-profit) — Guest-List only event with a limited number of invitations available – $650 per person ($1,000 per couple).
You you don’t to be a patron of the above event to enjoy some fabulous cheese however. For those who simply love cheese to go with your wine, check out the French Cheese Board‘s Cheese Pop Up Store’s event ( 26 West 39th Street, NYC) on April 10th from 11 am to 7pm . The French Cheese Board is a studio devoted to..well…French cheese. It’s an event space where consumers and trade members to discover the diversity and richness that French cheese has to offer through a series of interactive showings and events. There will be flowers, grass, art installations and cheese vendors, and the event will focus on a dozen “bloomy rind cheeses” –learn about camembert, Brie and Triple Creme (yum!!!!).
